Should police presence be standard operating procedure in schools today?

Some schools may be in high-risk neighbourhoods; may be populated by many high-risk students. Should these schools consider having a visible police presence?

There are schools in the United States which have metal detectors installed at the entrances to the school. Armed guards patrol some schools in the US. Undoubtedly, some Canadian schools have procedures in place to minimize violence there.

Does the presence of police in the school send the wrong message to the students or should the potential security of visible police presence outweigh the message?
