I bumped into the mayor the other day….

Fermo and I were out for a walk the other day, when we bumped into the head honcho of our fine town, Mayor Dave Ryan. He responded to my questions with some of his own and the friendly exchange confirms that the municipal campaign has begun.

Mayor Ryan greeted me by the first name when we met as we walked our pets. Like his master, Ryan’s dog was friendly and engaging with Fermo, not knowing that Fermo isn’t an eligible voter in the municipal elections.

Mayor Dave and I exchanged pleasantries confirming my feeling that living in this city is the best of both worlds, warmth and neighbourhoodness of a small community with the benefits of many services and programs offered by large, impersonal cosmopolitan conglomerates such as our big one just due west.

It is a very comforting feeling to be able to talk to the most important politician in the city as if he were just a neighbour down the street. Actually, he is that too with the same concerns all of us homeowners have…clean well-lit streets, well-maintained sidewalks and parks,

May 1st was candidate registration day in our municipality. Candidates who want to run in our municipal election must officially register as campaigners and they can now begin the official campaigns. Campaign fundraising, campaign offices and campaign launchings are official now and these public servants potentials are off and running.

In Pickering, the elections will be held over a week to give voters as much opportunity and convenience of voting rather than limiting the voting to one day only as was always done before. The election period is Oct. 15 -22, 2018. This year voters can use their cell phones to vote as the voting will be done electronically.
