BUTT, Shaheen

A personal message from Councillor Shaheen Butt…

Many of you may already know me – or my face looks very familiar – the reason why is that I’m the Councillor for Ward 3 and I need you to bring me back to serve the residents of Pickering.

Pickering resident,  for more than 20 years
I have lived in the Region of Durham for over 20 years and I am dedicated and passionate about key issues affecting all residents. Prior to politics, I worked in the corporate environment for three decades, 25 of those at IBM.

Caregiver who cares
My wife and three children are all actively involved in serving the community. However, it is my 99-year-old mother who keeps us grounded as a family. She lives with us and we’re all involved in her care. I know what seniors go through from day to day. Sometimes you’re in a great mood, other times, maybe a little down, lonely or feeling nostalgic. But Pickering is a city that supports our 55+ community with more than half a dozen programs that keep the body and mind active. For both young and old, there are physical and mental health programs that are affordable and I want to continue to improve on them.

Environmentally dedicated
One of my favourite groups is The Pickering Horticultural Society.  While on council I have consistently worked with them to make sure our green spaces are beautiful, accessible and with plenty of seating to accommodate senior life. And when winter comes, I know that shovelling snow isn’t easy (ask my back), but we look out for our seniors by offering a snow removal program.

Constantly tax conscious
My goal is to keep Pickering affordable for singles and families. During my two years on council, I fought to keep taxes at the lowest increase in 18 years. My plan is to continue to bring business to Pickering, like Kubota Canada Ltd, a tractor and heavy equipment manufacturer. Their 67 million dollar facility will be completed next year and bring jobs and corporate taxes to the city, which leads to tax relief for residents.

Pickering is my passion
I spearheaded a number of road and sidewalk improvements while on council to ensure that our city is safe for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. I love that our city is always recognized for its cleanliness and I want to keep up that sterling reputation.

Pickering is a great city to live, work, play as well as raise a family and retire.

When voting begins on October 15th, vote for
