Folklore tradition claims that if a groundhog sees its shadow on groundhog day, Feb. 2, it will go back to its burrow and continue hibernation for the six more weeks of winter is coming.
In Ontario, the most famous of the groundhogs promoted by their local townships is Wiarton Willie in Barrie, ON.
According to WW, we are in for six more weeks of old man winter weather. Too bad, so sad, we’re mad !!!
Other groundhog stars
The current Wiarton Willie is actually WW IV, the fourth.
Other towns throughout North America are known to have winter-predicting groundhogs. The most famous is Punxsutawney Phil of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania (which appeared in the movie Groundhog Day). There is also “Staten Island Chuck” in New York, “Balzac Billy” in Alberta, “General Beauregard Lee” in Jackson, Georgia, “Shubenacadie Sam” in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, Two Rivers Tunnel in Cape Breton and “Gary the Groundhog” in Kleinburg, Ontario, among many others. In 2014, a new prognosticator entered the mix: Toronto’s “Dundas Donna.” There is also la marmotte de Québec, Fred. He is celebrated in Québec and is more recent than others.
Seasonal prognostication the same
Sadly, the groundhogs of North America all agree with the same seasonal forecast. There is no escaping it, six more weeks of winter!
