[Caregivers play a vital but often unrecognized role in Ontario’s health and social care system. Across the province, an estimated four million caregivers provide essential physical, emotional, and practical support to family members, partners, friends, and neighbours who live with illness, disability, mental health challenges, or age-related needs. These caregivers are ordinary people taking on extraordinary responsibilities, frequently while balancing work, family life, and their own well-being.
The Ontario Caregiver Organization (OCO), funded by the Ministry of Health, exists to improve the lives of caregivers by ensuring they have access to the information, resources, and supports they need to succeed in their role. OCO serves as a central point of access, helping caregivers navigate complex systems and connect with existing services more easily and effectively.
A core principle of OCO’s work is collaboration. The organization works closely with caregivers, healthcare providers, and community partners to improve the caregiving experience across Ontario. This includes expanding access to existing supports, ensuring equity so that caregivers of all ages,]

Ontario Caregiver Support Resources
Almost 1 in 5 caregivers report taking the person they care for to the emergency room because they needed a break, according to data from our recent Spotlight Report. That meant 1.9 million ER visits last year for caregiver respite.
It’s not an easy decision to make. Caregivers arrive at the ER when they feel they have no other choice.
