Name awareness
Your pupply needs to learn his name. He can be trained to recognize it. With a few low calorie treats in hand, crouch or kneel near him and say his name, “Mico”…each time he looks at me after I have said the name, he gets a treat. He will learn very quicly that his name means something good. Eventually it can be just petting but at the beginning it is followed by a treat. Mico learned his name very quickly. In one session, he was very aware of his name being called and would look at me. Sometimes a treat, always verbal praise.
Puppy proofing home
Puppy proofing your home means restricting where you puppy can go in the living area.
We use plastic panels, approx 4′ X 5′ to block entranceways to certain rooms when we are not in them, the living room, the family room, the dining room. The entrance is block off for him.
His play area is the main hallway, all tiled floor for easy clean up and the room we are in, usually the family room. Our floors are hardwood and tile, so clean up is easy.
Accidents
If Mico has an accident, we clean it up, and spray a scent neutralizing, enzyme cleaner called “NATURE’S MIRACLE.” (It is available for cats and dogs.)
Family room setup
The family room has a number of scatter carpets for his comfort, one under the side table by the couch, and one in front of the fireplace. We place toys there so he can understand it is an area for his play.
