That’s an amazing slate of candidates but they aren’t all equal.
The old guard
Some campaigners are among the old guard and some of those are sitting back resting on their laurels, thinking they don’t have to put in the effort. Incumbency will win the day. Yeah…fat chance. The electorate are more sophisticated than to garner such presumptuous thinking. So you incumbents ‘cruising down the river,’ you may be surprised where the current thinking will take you. The world around us is a tougher place to live in now, more expensive, less safe, less stable, more fragile and it’s our leaders who are to blame. So the electorate is chomping at the bit for change. You incumbents may be part of it.
Inequality amongst equals
The new contenders may seem equal but they aren’t.
Some have professional credentials that make them weightier than others. Some have been around the political block before, and that experience puts them at the forefront. Some are working much harder than the others and they deserve more serious consideration. If they work hard here, they might work hard in City Hall.
Take a look at each contender. Ask yourself…have they knocked at your door? Have they left campaign material on your doorstep? Have they tried meeting you? Have you seen them among us or just on a stage? Do they sound sincere? Make plausible promises? Sound convincing? Believable?
Some of these candidates make you wonder why they are even running. No show? No constructive or visible campaigning. Are they serious?
You’re the voter…you make the final decision. Vote for the candidate that presents themselves as real candidates….campaigning, appearing at events, willing to talk to you explaining their position, wearing a name tag to identify themselves. Is this campaigner deserving of your vote? Do you want this person as you next councillor?
