Ashe January update

Mayor Ashe’s Monthly Update – January 2026

Happy New Year, Pickering! As we look ahead, I’m excited to share updates on transformative projects and initiatives that will shape our city’s future:

Frenchman’s Bay
We have launched a campaign to protect and acquire Frenchman’s Bay for public ownership. The City of Pickering is committing $10M, and I have formally requested matching contributions from the provincial and federal governments for a proposed funding model totaling $30M. This past December, we signed an agreement with the current landowner, triggering a 160-day due diligence period. Our goal is to secure federal funding in 2026 and, if all goes as planned, close the deal and officially own the bay by Canada Day.

Historic Power Plant Announcement
– Pickering Nuclear Generating Station
The Ontario Government has officially greenlit the refurbishment of Units 5–8 at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, marking a historic investment in energy and jobs for our city. This $26 billion project will create over 30,000 good-paying jobs here in Pickering and across Ontario, while generating clean power for 2.2 million homes. Importantly, 90% of project spending will stay in Canada, strengthening domestic supply chains and supporting local businesses. This is a proud moment for Pickering and the province in ensuring long-term energy reliability while driving economic growth and opportunity for our community.

Seaton Recreation Complex & Library
Council has approved moving the project into the detailed design stage, marking an important step forward. With Pickering’s population expected to grow by 45% by 2034, investing in amenities like pools, arenas, libraries, and parks is essential. This project remains a top priority as we work with provincial and federal partners to secure support.

Dorsay Community & Heritage Centre
Construction of the Pickering Heritage and Community Centre is well underway and scheduled to open by April 1, 2026. This exciting project will replace an aging community centre in Greenwood and, for the first time, provide a dedicated space for our City Archives, an exhibit area, and additional community space. This is a significant investment in preserving our heritage while creating new opportunities for residents to connect and engage.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to build a stronger, more vibrant Pickering.

Mayor Kevin Ashe
