Dog Treat Guidelines
[ Source: A Canadian breeder of Scottish Terriers]
The following directive outlines approved treat types, preparation methods, and usage guidelines to support healthy training and reward practices.
Calorie Guidelines
- Target treats that are 2 calories or less per piece wherever possible.
- Soft and chewy treats should be used in moderation only — they are not considered ideal for dental health.
Recommended Commercial Treats
- Charlie Bears — a low-calorie crunchy favourite.
- Fromm’s Crunchi Os (available at Global Pet Foods) — can be broken in half to yield a ~1-calorie treat.
- Tilted Barn Sticks — cut into small pieces before use.
Prepared & Homemade Treats
- Hydrated Dried Liver — rehydrate with water, then cut into small pieces.
- Dried Beef Sticks — hydrate if needed, then break or cut into small pieces (these break apart more easily than liver).
- Tuna Fudge — homemade; cut into small pieces. Note: caloric content is higher and has not been formally calculated. Use as a high-value training treat when extra motivation is needed.
Preparation Instructions
- Always cut or break treats into the smallest practical pieces to keep calorie counts low per reward.
- When hydrating dried treats, soak in water until softened, then pat dry before cutting.
- Crunchy treats are preferred over soft/chewy options for routine use to support dental health.
- Reserve high-value treats (e.g., tuna fudge) for training sessions requiring strong motivation.
These guidelines reflect tested preferences and practical experience. Adjust as needed based on individual dog dietary requirements.
