Fermo was a Scottish terrier, the breed chosen as my partner relented on getting a dog after many years of prodding and pleading. She finally agreed with the stipulation it be a small dog.
A Scottie was the biggest small dog I could find. Needless to say, this small dog made a gigantic impact on our lives, our family, our home. A replacement dog was a non-question. But another Scottie was rejected. Another Scottie would be a constant painful reminder of Fermo. Losing Fermo has been devastating. Having another Scottie would be poking and prodding at the wound that the loss has left us.But a Scottie has a special personality that makes them unique, special and unboundable. Once you have a Scottie, you soon recognize this is a special pet with a personality that sticks to you like glue. Glued to you forever, glued to your heart, your head and your soul.
So the question became how can the Scottie be replaced without an actual Scottie. The criteria list had to include stubborn, intelligent, alert, attentive, independent…along with moderate exercise needs, moderate size. Without question, it had to be a terrier. Many dog breeds make lovable pets but terriers are special. They put it all together into one single package. A short search in the terrier compartment resulted in the focus coming down to a mini Schnauzer.
Next step, picking a breeder
There is an anxiety that comes from thinking about a drog being shipped, or air flown delivered from hundreds of miles away. Though they may be tranquillized, it still has to be a traumatic journey for a young pup. Fermo was a car drive away. Picked up and driven to his new home sitting on a soft blanket on my lap with me murmuring to him and gently petting him to reassure on this trip to his new home, less than an hour away. I still believe it was somewhat stressful for him.
The new pup is also approximately an hour away by car. We hope the trip will be comfortable and minimallly stressful for the pup.
So it’s a mini SCHNAUZER terrier
And next…the naming issue. One name is not on the list… Fermo
