POLITICS [update]: By Election results – Carney sweeps all three byelections

The Liberals, led by Mark Carney, swept all three of the byelections of this past week. The resulting updates is as follows:

Danielle Martin (University—Rosedale): A prominent physician, professor at the University of Toronto, and former health-care executive. She is best known for her advocacy of Canada’s single-payer healthcare system, famously defending it before a U.S. Senate committee in 2014, and for her bestselling book, Better Now. She succeeded former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland in this Liberal stronghold.

Doly Begum (Scarborough Southwest): Formerly the Deputy Leader of the Ontario NDP and a two-term MPP, she resigned from provincial politics to run federally for the Liberals. She is a well-known community advocate in Scarborough with a focus on healthcare access and tenant rights. Her transition to the federal Liberals was a key strategic win for the party in the Greater Toronto Area.

Tatiana Auguste (Terrebonne): A Haitian-born e-commerce consultant and one of the first Gen Z members of Parliament. She originally won this Quebec riding in the 2025 general election by just one vote, but the result was later annulled by the Supreme Court of Canada. She reclaimed her seat in this by-election with a much more decisive margin of over 700 votes.
