The slate of candidates in the municipal elections in Pickering is filled with strong candidates with very strong professional backgrounds. Many of them deserve being elected to Council based their professional curriculum vitae. However, the criteria for a voting decision is much broader than that. Voters want to know the candidate, hear the candidate explain their platform and discuss their political proposals on a one-to-one basis. That can’t be done if you never meet the candidate or get to know them.
Maybe a bigger flaw in some candidates’ campaigns may be that they are completely unknown to the voters. No voter will vote for a complete unknown and many of the candidates are just that….unknowns.
A word to these not-well-known candidates…start knockin’ folks and say your name first. Wear a name tag and a name displaying shirt. Voters will not vote for you if they don’t know you and don’t know your name.
