Councillor Nagy text

MARA NAGY      B

City Councillor Mara Nagy, representing Ward 2, was elected in October 2022. A lifelong Pickering resident with a background in education, she has a clear focus on community development, environmental issues, and social equity. Nagy is known for her vocal advocacy on a range of progressive issues and her commitment to transparency. While she has been effective in highlighting these issues and has a strong community-oriented platform, her involvement in the council’s ongoing internal conflicts has been a significant point of public discussion.

Subject Grades

  1. Community Advocacy & Social Equity: A-

Performance: Councillor Nagy has distinguished herself as a champion for social and environmental causes. Her platform emphasizes Indigenous reconciliation, 2SLGBTQIA+ allyship, and addressing mental health stigma and disability barriers. As an activist, she has worked to protect wetlands and supported workers’ rights. Her professional background as a teacher and her academic studies in community development provide a strong foundation for her advocacy.

Evidence: Nagy has been vocal about her commitment to upholding the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. She has actively advocated for vulnerable communities.

Room for Improvement: Continued work to translate her advocacy into tangible city policies and programs will be crucial for long-term impact.

  1. Urban Planning & Environmental Protection: B+

Performance: Nagy’s platform centers on responsible growth and environmental sustainability. She has been a strong opponent of “mindless growth” and has advocated for transit and infrastructure development that is mindful of the environment. Her work to protect wetlands highlights her commitment to green spaces. She has also called for a Lobbyist Registry to ensure accountability in development.

Evidence: As an activist, she worked to repeal a ministerial zoning order (MZO) on wetlands in south Pickering. She advocates for growing the city along main arteries and for the electrification of public transit.

Room for Improvement: As the city faces rapid growth, her ability to successfully influence and shape policy on major development projects will be the primary measure of her effectiveness in this area.

  1. Governance & Council Relations: C-

Performance: Councillor Nagy has been a key figure in the contentious atmosphere at City Hall. She is an outspoken critic of a fellow councillor, whom she has accused of creating chaos and disrupting council business. She has supported the decision to move council meetings online and has stated that she and another councillor have received threats. While she asserts that her actions are necessary to ensure a safe and functional government, the ongoing public disputes and lack of a collaborative environment have been a source of public concern.

Evidence: Nagy has spoken at a provincial conference, calling the situation in Pickering a “provincial crisis” and has advocated for legislation to protect municipal leaders. She is a co-signee of a complaint against a fellow councillor.

Room for Improvement: The effectiveness of council is compromised by internal conflicts. An improved grade would require a move toward de-escalation and a greater focus on working constructively with all colleagues to conduct city business.

Notes

Councillor Nagy is a passionate and well-informed representative with a clear commitment to her community and a wide range of progressive issues. She brings a fresh perspective to council with her background in education and activism. Her strong focus on social equity and environmental issues is a valuable asset to the city.  However, her active role in the highly-publicized council conflicts has been a significant detractor from her overall performance. While her concerns about safety and good governance are valid, the ongoing disputes have created a perception of dysfunction. A move toward a more collaborative and less confrontational approach would greatly benefit her effectiveness and the city as a whole.
