Dear Sir,
I have been publishing a website at www.szpin.ca and a monthly newsletter for nearly 10 years, both simply informational services that I started to help older adults. My publications are not commercialized in any sense, solely underwritten by an octogenarian retiree. It’s my hobby and my service to the community.
But the latest news clip I have received and viewed scares the livin’ hell out of me. It was a video on YouTube of Kamala Harris talking about a judge ruling against Trump’s many properties (YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQnGAvODF8U ) When I searched various news sources to confirm the validity of the news article, it came up as false, appearing on YouTube and Facebook.
So I guessed it was an AI creation. Then it dawned on me. AI is being used to create numerous false narratives, online, on TV, on the radio, on smartphones, etc
I posted a warning to all my publication users, I don’t have many, a couple of thousand, no more. I do not push for more as I fear being hacked and large exposure could put me at greater risk.
However, here’s the rub
It is very likely that the majority of the population is going to accept what they see and hear on the news as FACT. If your ministry believes news broadcasters will authenticate fake news each time, you are overlooking their profit motives.
For your convenience, rather than have you go to my website at www.szpin.ca to view what I wrote about this Fake news examples, I am providing you with the text of what I wrote with the question: “What is the federal ministry which you head planning to do about this kind of FAKE presentations?” It cannot be ignored as most people will take these kinds of fake news at face value. Imagine if the malevolents who author such stuff urged people to take all the money out of their local bank, imagine a fake story about the imminent scarcity of auto fuel…I am sure you could come with some dangerous examples yourself. Here’s the text from my site:
EVERYONE: Be very wary about any and all news broadcasts on any device
BE VERY WARY ABOUT ALL NEWSCASTS YOU NOW SEE OR HEAR FROM ANY SOURCE
AI has become so powerful and dynamic. You cannot trust any news cast you now see or hear.
If you have any doubts about a newscast, a news article, a news bulletin, VERIFY IT. Listen or view other news sources to validate the piece.
AI is so developed now and being used by malevolents that authentic looking videos are popping up everywhere.
FAKE NEWS
Fake news is starting to appear everywhere. AI is able to make any video look real, the person speaking looks real, their lip movement is perfectly synched with the text. You will be fooled into thinking it is an actual video recording of a live broadcast. IT IS FAKE. IT IS PHONY. IT HAS BEEN CREATED BY AN AI CONTROLLED COMPUTER. Ignore it. Unless you have heard the same news from multiple different sources, discard it.
You can no longer trust what you see and hear. AI has become so powerful and broadly used.
We are now living in a George ORWELL’S 1984 world. What we see and hear electronically, digitally can no longer be trusted as being true. FAKE NEWS is appearing everywhere now.
Honorable Minister Solomon, I hope I hear from you in response to this email. I tried phoning your ministry, but it has protective layers that the common citizen likely cannot get past. That is another story and a said comment about the accessibility of our federal elected officials. I am lucky that in my years of doing this work; I have developed connections with elected officials at all levels and in all three jurisdictions: federal, provincial and municipal.
I hope this message reaches someone in your office. I doubt it will be pushed up the ladder to you personally, but I do hope some responsible and able to speak on behalf of your ministry responds to it.
