Hello Pickering,
It’s your Mayor Kevin Ashe here for my monthly recap of the council meeting of January 26 where we had a full agenda. Lots of important items as we kicked off the New Year with some reports as well as some updates on some of our strategic plans that we’ve been doing over the course of the last year or two in the city.
Anti-Black Racism Task Force
First of all we appointed a new representative to the anti-black racism task force very important work that this committee does in regards to some systemic barriers that are black communion has had. Important as well because February as we changed the calendar is black history month, and there will be lots of events around our city during the month of February.
Strategic Plan update
Our annual update of our corporate strategic plan was on the agenda, lots of things that are happening, and this was brought to us by the chief administrative office. We also got year one progress on our 10-year parks and recreation plan lots of plans for the future.
Cricket facility
I’m really excited about bringing cricket facilities and enhanced cricket facilities to our city over the course of the next year or two.
Airport land
Transport Canada is looking for our input on the future of the airport lands which would remain static for over 50 years and we’ve hired a consultant to help us in regards to the right mix of agriculture, agro-tourism Rouge Park expansion as well as economic activity. Look forward to working with these consultants and our community to get to input on the future of the federal airport lands.
Fire prevention and Traffic regulation
New aerial truck for our fire service, $2.5 million, will be delivered to. Increase fire protection.
We also hired a consultant to help us in terms of guidelines for traffic, calming guidelines speeding in our city is of importance to a lot of people so we’re looking at new types of traffic calming measures and I look forward to working with the consultants in our community and stakeholders to enhance that service to a residence.
Frenchman’s Bay acquisition
We also hired an additional consultant KPMG to do the due diligence for the purchase of Frenchman’s Bay really excited about hopefully the conclusion and the announcement of the funding partners for the federal government, the provincial government in the city government to return Frenchman’s be the public realm.
Other January events
January wraps up a number of events. I attended for Tamil Heritage month. We have a growing Tamil community, lots of color and vibrancy. Certainly, the diversity in our city is something that we embrace and support.
February also sees the Olympics kicked off. Here’s a shout out to all our Olympians, Team Canada. Let’s wear our Maple leaf on our our chest proudly and support Team Canada.
