The City of Pickering may be justified in erecting memorial monuments as recognition of citizens who have made significant contributions to the City. However, with time, these monuments could salt and pepper every park, parkette and green space throughout the city. Walking in any green space could be hazardous.
Rather, the City should consider a WALL OF FAME somewhere at City Hall, at the central library or in a community centre. Even then, they must look to the future as the list of eligible citizens’ names may grow and grow. But that’s a problem for future councils. For now, they should consider what door they could be opneing as monuments are added each time a notable citizen’s name is submitted.
