RCRA neighbourhood assoc: KUDOS to the RCRA for a very valuable engagement with the community

ROUGEMOUNT COMMUNITY RECREATION ASSOCIATION: the neighbourhood association held its second annual general meeting, a very informative session at St. Monica’s school, Feb 19.

President Peggy Bowie and her executive deserve praise and kudos for a very valuable and constructive presentation which included:

  1. FIRE PREVENTION explanation by Julie Lennox of the Pickering Fire Department and
  2. CITY OF PICKERING UPDATE by Councillor Maurice Brenner

FIRE PREVENTION
Fire Dept. officer Julie Lennox’s presentation dealt with fire prevention and fire alarms. She spoke about the causes of fires, fire alarms, and actions to undertake in case of a fire in the home. Lennox emphasized that homeowners need fire alarms on every floor of their home and these alarms should be current and up-to-date. Her talk clarified about alarms and features such as ‘hush buttons’ and ‘interconnected alarms.’ She underlined that homeowners need to have an escape plan which is reviewed and rehearsed from time to time with all the family members to keep them informed as to what they should do in case of a fire. An excellent presentation.

CITY OF PICKERING UPDATE
Councillor Maurice Brenner attended the RCRA meeting and updated everyone regarding the latest on Pickering’s traffic calming policies. One audience member aggressively engaged Brenner about Council meetings and Pickering council productivity. Brenner replied that Pickering Council was working hard to keep Pickering residents informed about their policies and activity outcomes.

Traffic regulation seems to be a serious concern for Pickering residents, but the majority of these people need to express their concerns at public Council meetings. Brenner explained Council has been doing virtual meetings because of COVID concerns, as the COVID situation seems to have eased Council meetings will soon return to the City Council chambers permitting live attendance by interested citizens.

Brenner was very informative the topic of traffic calming issues discussed by the Council. The Council is responding to citizens’ concerns with detailed and ongoing examination of traffic calming strategies and responses in various parts of the City.

Councillor Brenner is excellent at keeping constituents informed regarding aspects of his work as a local and regional councillor in Durham with his regularly published eNewsletter and his regularly held TOWN HALLS.

Again, kudos to the RCRA for this very informative meeting and its valuable engagement with the community.
