Mayor Ashe’s Statement on the Passing of Pope Francis

April 22, 2025

On behalf of the City of Pickering, its Members of Council, and residents, I extend my deepest condolences to all who mourn the passing of Pope Francis. He was not only a spiritual leader to Catholics and Christians worldwide, but also a symbol of humility, compassion, and social justice who inspired millions. His unwavering dedication to the most vulnerable, his calls for peace, and his profound acts of kindness transcended faith and borders, touching lives across the globe.

Pope Francis recognized the painful legacy of Canada’s residential school system and took meaningful steps toward reconciliation with Indigenous communities. His historic apology, acknowledging the Catholic Church’s central role, offered healing to many.  However, his passing serves as a reminder that the journey toward truth and reconciliation is far from complete – an ongoing responsibility we must all embrace and advance together.

Through his words and actions, Pope Francis challenged us to build a more just and compassionate world. As we reflect on his life and leadership, we commit to carrying forward his legacy by fostering understanding, extending kindness, and striving for a future rooted in justice, unity, and hope. To mark his passing and honour his remarkable impact, we will lower flags at all City facilities
