PROPERTY TAXES AND AFFORDABILITY – MY SEVEN-POINT PLAN
The average tax bill was approximately $7,650 for 2025. This presents a serious fee which must be addressed.
- Line-by-line budget review. I will perform a line-by-line study of our 2026 City budget and forecast 2027 budget, seeking and cutting waste or duplicate services.
- Council extras and add-ons. I will immediately put forth a motion to review extras and add-ons offered to City Council, including vehicle allowance, security and office budgets. The vehicle allowance of $1,000 per month is egregious and simply not necessary or fair.
- Attract commercial and industrial enterprise. I will work to attract commercial and industrial enterprise to Pickering to help balance the revenue streams. Industrial pays 3x the residential rate. This will help ease the heavy lifting currently done by homeowners.
- Provincial downloading. Downloading from the Province onto municipalities must be addressed. Eight billion dollars over the last decade has shifted from the Province onto municipalities.
- The education portion of our tax bill. It is time for a real discussion. The theory is that we pay for our own education over time through property taxes, so why is it an open-ended payment? Should there be a final amount or number of years to pay? All options should be considered.
- Value for our dollars. Pickering has high taxes, yet the value received for those taxes is less than in our neighbouring municipalities. Why is this, and what can be done?
- A common-sense approach. I will not dabble in “best case scenarios” or “leverage our tax dollars” to attain low-percentage outcomes. My approach will be to use dollars wisely and prudently, always with an eye on the rainy day.
MY VISION FOR PICKERING’S GROWTH
Pickering will grow by about 50,000 people in the coming decades. My vision for our city includes:
- A new hospital as part of the Lakeridge Health system.
- An agricultural college or university on the Airport Lands, with a rail stop on Alto.
- A string of City daycares, established in the coming condominiums.
RECREATION IMPROVEMENTS
- Improved marina facilities.
- The addition of a band shell and a retail courtyard.
- At least three splash pads in existing parks.
- Outdoor ice skating pads.
- Affordable sports programming for underserved communities.
- Lowering of the seniors’ rate age at our recreation centres.
SAFE, ENGAGED COMMUNITIES
- Re-establish Neighbourhood Watch and Block Parenting.
- A new rewards program through Parks and Recreation, giving free access to facilities for community leaders and volunteers.
FRENCHMAN’S BAY
The purchase of the Bay and the additional lands.
TRANSPORTATION
Create a hybrid system that incorporates Uber for our more isolated residents who live a distance from our existing bus routes.
