POLITICS (CDA): Party distribution in the House of Commons (4.14.26)

The situation
The LIBERALS have a majority with 174 seats. They are in the driver’s seat in Canadian government. After a brief honeymoon period with the media and the electorate, it will be interesting to see where Carney and his party take the government.

The issues at hand
The hottest issues facing the government at the moment are:

  • establishing some stability to the economy to dampen inflation
  • housing
  • defense spending
  • volatility of Canadian unity

“Cross over MPs”
The “cross over  MP’s” isn’t a priority issue for Carney at the moment. However, these MP’s will need attention. They have shown that they are not adherents of caucus/party loyalty which likely means they will vote as they see fit personally. They cannot be relied on to adhere to party loyalty. Will this affect govt policy creation? Will they have greater leverage with the govt than the steadfastly loyal party MP’s? These MP’s will definitely be interesting to watch, as well as the govt’s relationship with them and their policy objectives. Are they ‘independent thinkers’ or can they be counted on for party loyalty in future?
