‘THE SQUAD’ indicates Trump as being a racist.
I bristled and was totally shocked, although I can’t understand why, that the President of the United States articulated his dark thoughts about sending 4 congress women ‘back to where they came from.’ He emphasised the character of the women and the countries of their origin and goaded them by saying when you’re in America “You either Love It or Leave It!” Sounded more like a real estate slogan to me! Where exactly did he want these women to go back to when all 4 of them are American citizens, with 3 of them born right in America. He demanded that they go back to the country of their ancestors, fix the problems of those countries first, then return and show “the rest of us” how it’s done. All four women are of colour, so could this have sounded like a racist comment? I think it was. Just my opinion!
The four congress women responded well, exemplifying their positions in society, Congress, and indeed, in America.
Alexandria Cortez declared right after that derogatory comment that the President is sending her back to Queens where she will continue to work on family unification, on Border conditions, on abolishing ICE, and on fighting for an all-inclusive Medicare. She is not going anywhere, she affirmed! She is staying in her district to fight for equitable and better service for all!
Ayanna Presley is an elected congress woman from Massachusetts whose focus is to combat sexual violence, to bring legislation to reform immigration and to fight gun violence.
Rashida Tlaib, another Michigan-born, elected official in Congress and a lawyer, is out in her community connecting with the working poor and gaining an understanding how poverty affects children and families. On their behalf, she is drafting legislation for increase in the minimum wage for $20.00/hr., lobbying for affordable day-care, and to bring about Universal Health Care.
The fourth and last member of ‘The Squad” is Ilhan Omar who was born in Somalia. She and her family fled a long-running civil war 20 years ago. Today she is a naturalised American citizen, and an elected member of Congress, representing Minnesota. She is fighting for a just and fair system for asylum seekers. She draws from personal and painful experience by connecting with asylum seekers who dream that one day they too can have a slice of the American Dream!
So, are these four formidable, highly motivated Congress women of colour and of the Muslim faith, helping to shape and regulate laws and reforms for the improvement of their communities, of the Americans in those communities, and perhaps Making America Great Again? They are committed to hard work, to listen to the needs of their people and staying in their respective states, because for them “going back where they came from” is staying and fighting in the heart of America.
I sincerely believe that racism is going to dominate the 2020 election. It won’t be Health Care, the Economy, Defense, or even the Military, but it will be Race. The President’s base is already riled up!
Well, it’s Just My Opinion
