COOKz: The EASIEST vs The BEST CORN cooking methods

The EASIEST (1-2 EARS) – MICROWAVE

1. Place ear, husk and all, into the microwave, high heat, 3 minutes. [More ears, increase time to 5-6 minutes] You will need to experiment with the times as different ovens yield different results but 1 ear-3min, 3+ears – 6 minutes should be about right.]

2. Remove corn from oven with oven mitt. Allow to cool a few minutes until corn can be handled.

3. On a cutting board, slice off the bottom of the corn just above the stem so that you can more easily slip the ear out of the husk once it’s cooked, supposedly free of almost all its silks.

__________________

The BEST (many EARS) – BOILED (not quite)

1. HUSK and CLEAN SILK from corn ears (8-10 ears depending on needs)
2. Cut each ear into thirds
3. Cover with water in large pot for “boiling”
4. Heat until water reaches 180F
5. Remove from heat. Cover with lid and allow to stand for 10 minutes*
6. Drain corn and serve.

[ * Standing time can be varied from 10-20 mins. Ideal way to have corn stay hot for serving without worry of ruining the corn. Ideal time is 10 minutes but anymore up to 10 min more will not ruin the corn at all.]

POINT-COUNTERPOINT: Voices like Pickering Councillor Robinson must be heard

Voices like Pickering Councillor Lisa Robinson must be heard and listening does not presume agreement.

Councillor Robinson is an elected official, a mature thinking adult and an opinionated politician. She takes positions that some may find objectionable, others not so. However, like the proverbial broken clock is correct twice each day, the more one says, the great are the chance that some of the material may have validity.

Robinson hits the mark often but in her vast statements, she also deviates from accuracy or validity. For instance, she has a point in saying that developers are very entangled in municipal affairs when it comes to Pickering development but asserting that it is bribery and corruption is stretching too far. Another, Ashe may have used labels such as wacko, Nazis and the like, but labelling him a racist is another example of overstretch. From the very start, Robinson has some valid poses, such as saying isolating one group in public flag-raising ignores other groups, but calling it segregation or polarization is a stretch.

Voices like Robinson or any voice publishing in the public arena need to be taken with a grain of salt, not digested holus bolus. The statements need to be analysed, evaluated and weighed before they are accepted or rejected. But such consideration takes time, patience, energy and effort, characteristics that are becoming increasingly eroded in the general public using social media. And there’s the problem!!!

Social media is used today with less and less regard as to its validity or authenticity. Too many people jump on its band wagon as quickly as the message or posting is published. The most recent example is the rioting taking place in the UK over the stabbing deaths of the three children. The social media claim was that the perpetrator was a refugee, colored, and a terrorist fundamentalist. False! Authorities identified the perpetrator as a native born British citizen with no ties with any terrorist organization. However, the rioting crowds missed the message. The mob acted just as a mob acts, emotionally, gut reaction without thinking and consideration.

Voices from the far right or any part of the political spectrum should be heard but given serious and broad consideration and evaluation before they are accepted or rejected. This is as true for local politics as it is in the wider world.

PICKERING: Councillor Robinson Press Release, UNEDITED and UNREVISED

NEWS RELEASE

Sunday August 4, 2024

Pickering’s mayor Kevin Ashe labels residents of Durham as racists. Mr. Mayor, I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, your recent comments labeling my supporters and the residents of Durham as racists. This behavior is absolutely disgusting and beneath the dignity of your office. It is disgraceful that you would resort to such baseless and inflammatory rhetoric simply because individuals hold views that differ from your own or the Council’s.

Your comments, made over social media in the group “Free Speech Pickering,” are not just an isolated incident. This is not the first time you have resorted to name-calling and derogatory remarks towards those who do not support you. In the past, you have called them nutcases, wackos, Nazis, and the list goes on and on. Such behavior is unworthy of a leader who should be fostering unity and respectful dialogue within our community.

It is also deeply concerning and equally reprehensible that Councillor Mara Nagy would even like such a post. This endorsement of your divisive language by an elected official is a stark reminder of the toxic political climate that you are perpetuating.

Your attempt to vilify and marginalize those who stand in opposition to your policies not only disrespects the diverse perspectives within our community but also undermines the very principles of democratic discourse. Durham deserves a leader who can engage with differing viewpoints respectfully and constructively, not one who resorts to divisive name-calling and baseless accusations.

Your words are not only offensive but also a stark reminder of the importance of robust and respectful debate in our society. We must rise above such pettiness and work towards building a community where all voices are heard and respected, regardless of political alignment.

As an elected official, I cannot believe the disturbing behavior and rhetoric that has been emanating not only from the Mayor’s office but also from the City of Pickering. I always knew that politics could be a dirty game, but this behavior goes beyond dirty — it’s profoundly disturbing. The residents of Durham deserve better. They deserve leaders who foster unity, respect, and constructive dialogue, not those who resort to divisive and offensive tactics. It is time for a change, and I am committed to standing up for the integrity and dignity of our community.

I call on you to retract your statement and to apologize to the people of Durham. It is high time we focus on meaningful dialogue and cooperation rather than resorting to harmful and unfounded labels.

Since

Lisa Robinson

Councillor Mara Nagy is criticized for liking the mayor’s post, which Councillor Robinson sees as endorsing divisive language.

Councillor Robinson argues that this behaviour undermines democratic discourse and disrespects diverse perspectives in the community.

The statement calls for Mayor Ashe to retract his comments and apologize to the people of Durham.

Councillor Robinson expresses concern about the overall political climate in Pickering, describing it as “toxic” and “disturbing.”

There’s a call for a change in leadership style, emphasizing the need for unity, respect, and constructive dialogue.

TECHNOLOGY: An up close and personal snaphot of a ‘computer nerd’

Brett Batie
Filerev developer

Down in some gloomy dark room where the only light beams from a computer monitor, a stringbean hoodie-wearing person slumps over a keyboard, tapping away furiously. This is the stereotypical view many people have of computer app developers. Well, the picture is wrong for Filerev developer, Brett Batie.

Brett is a family man, close to 40 years old, with a beautiful family of wife, 4 kids and 1 golden retriever. He’s far removed from the stereotypical image of computer programmers that many people have, the grungy, dishevelled, hoodie clad young man humped over a keyboard, clacking away at a digital keyboard.

Brett works out of sunny, bright home office at a neatly organized desk on which sit his desktop computer with its digital accessories. He keeps office hours.

He balances his computer life with his family life. Together they pursue outdoor activities all year long, swimming in a nearby Great Lake in the summer, skiing and snowboarding in the winter, hiking and trail exploring in spring and fall. Brett’s not your stereotypical digital app developer.

Brett developed Filerev after more than twenty years of working in the computer world. He felt other computer users likely had difficulties that come with vast amounts of data stored randomly and without organization on their computers and on Google Drive. He saw the problem; Filerev was his solution.

TECHNOLOGY: Why a Tech CEO Who Won’t Let His Kids on Social Media

PICKERING COUNCIL: City should offer citizens better eye glasses to read COUNCILLOR EXPENSE REPORTS

TRANSPARENCY or OBSCURITY?

Pickering City Councillors’ expense reports lack essential transparency and accountability. The current reporting system obscures crucial details, making it nearly impossible for taxpayers to scrutinize how their money is being spent.

The expense reports fail to provide critical information:

  • No explanation of the purpose or relevance of claimed items to city business
  • Lack of justification for local taxi use when councillors receive car allowances
  • No details on accompanying individuals for claimed trips
  • Absence of mandatory actual receipts
  • Potential fees for Freedom of Information requests to access more details

This opaque system raises serious concerns about the potential misuse of public funds. Historical examples of expense abuse, such as the
Bev Oda scandal, involving exorbitant claims for luxury items, underscores the importance of rigorous oversight.

To ensure the proper use of taxpayer money, expense reports should include:

  • Detailed explanations of each expense’s purpose and relevance to city business
  • Justification for transportation choices
  • Information on any accompanying individuals
  • Mandatory submission of actual receipts
  • Free access to detailed expense information for taxpayers

Without these improvements, Pickering’s expense reporting system remains as transparent as a boarded-up window, leaving taxpayers in the dark about how their money is being spent by city councillors.

The City has glasses for better viewing of Councillor Expense Reports…

POINT-COUNTERPOINT: Politicians eschewing residency in the riding they represent…hypocrisy?

Why is it that people elected to represent our community don’t live here? As an example, Peter Bethlenfalvy. Apparently, he rents a condo under the guise that he is a long-time resident. This is probably a requirement to skirt the Elections Act. He was and is a Toronto resident who resided in the well-heeled parts of Toronto. Now the same issue faces us with the upcoming Federal election. Over a dozen people are running to represent Pickering-Brooklin (Uxbridge got dropped), and only 2 to 3 live in Pickering. We don’t need or want people who have no vested interest in our community. Some involve themselves with local charities to show how involved they are, but they know very little about what the makeup of the community is.

Party politics has shanghaied our electoral system. I want a local person who I can hold accountable for their actions and who responds to the community’s needs.

POLITICS: Poilievre shows how classless he really is….HATE SPEECH MONGER !

Just what we need in the office of Prime Minister, a politician who disregards HATE SPEECH.

Recently, Poilievre referred to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (as well as the Liberal and New Democratic parties) as “extremists,” “raving wackos” and “lunatics” who “detest the working class” and have “total disdain for the common people.”

Poilievre’s indifference to the harms of inflammatory speech is irresponsible. Elsewhere in the country, heated language toward politicians has risen to the level of threats of violence.

When questioned about his HATE LABELS…“No need to tone down,” he declared. “My criticisms of the prime minister are entirely reasonable.”

Really….this political leader is Canada’s T**** and no logical, thinking person would ever consider voting for that American blowhard. So are you going to vote for his Canadian one?

EDITORIALS: Political promises need to be taken with a ‘grain of salt’

A lot of hot air!

The nature of the beast is to blow hot air all the time, either to persuade voters to vote for them or to persuade them to vote against the people in power. Either way, the hot air is promises, endless promises.

Voters need a little reminder to take all those promises with a grain of salt. Politicians cannot deliver everything they promise but they can promise they can. The promise is not the outcome. Often the promise has no hope of ever becoming the outcome but politicians make them forever.

The electorate is not gullible or clueless. It is hopeful, hoping that some of the promises will be fulfilled once the politicians have attained office. Then, after a few years, the hot air drifts away with new wafts in which the voters place renewed hope. A vicious and endless circle.

Provincial Liberal leader, Bonnie Crombie, promises a hospital for Whitby or Pickering. The need for a hospital here goes without question with the growing population. Now the grain of salt: how will this new hospital be financed? Is there money for it? Is it a practical possibility? These questions need to be discussed before we jump on the band wagon, simply voting yes to what feels like comfortable hot air.

Let’s hear some details Ms. Crombie.

HEALTH: Foods that help strengthen your bone health

Nearly 2 million Canadians over 40 have osteoporosis, a condition that leads to thin, weakened bones and raises the risk of bone fractures and mobility problems. We typically start losing bone strength in our 30s, but we can often slow down the process by paying attention to what’s on our plates.

Certain ingredients, including salt and caffeine, can increase the amount of calcium we’re losing. Other foods, on the other hand, can top us up with the many nutrients our bodies depend on to maintain bone health.

  1. Kefir
Kefir, a fermented dairy drink, is rich in calcium – which plays an important role in bone maintenance. Without calcium, our bones wear out faster. And unfortunately, as we get older, we don’t absorb calcium from foods as well as we used to. Kefir peptides may actually help our bodies absorb calcium and improve bone density, as demonstrated in a 2015 experiment in Taiwan. In Canada, kefir and other milk products are fortified with vitamin D. That’s also a critical nutrient for bone-building, since it increases the amount of calcium we absorb. Another plus: the probiotics in kefir may contribute to lower cholesterol!
  2. Sardines
Canned sardines come with bones included. This makes them an excellent source of calcium. Sardines are high in protein which is absolutely necessary for repairing bone. Here’s something else about sardines that makes us smile: They contain omega-3 oils, which appear to have special benefits for bones. Fatty fish are a better protein choice than meats high in saturated fats, which can be hard on our bone health. However, make sure you choose sardines packed in water and not oil, which may leach away some of those important omega-3s.

  3. Collard greens
Magnesium, found in collard greens and other dark, leafy veggies, is another mineral essential for our bones. In fact, our risk of osteoporosis goes up when our magnesium goes low. Magnesium deficiency seems to have an impact on some of the mechanisms involved in bone building. (A very high intake of magnesium can interfere with bone health too, but you’re perfectly safe if you stick to dietary sources of this nutrient, instead of taking supplements.) When you’re eating your leafy greens, be aware that some of them, particularly spinach and beet tops, contain high amounts of oxalates, which can interfere with the amount of calcium you absorb. But just throw some low-fat cheese on your greens, and you’ll be fine! Other sources of magnesium include okra and artichokes.

  4. Bananas and plantains
Plantains and bananas are rich in potassium. Other potassium foods include sweet potatoes, oranges and tomatoes. Our bones love this mineral because it helps protect them from wear and tear. It also contributes to our electrolyte balance. That’s a good thing, since we typically eat too much salt, which can raise our blood pressure and harm our blood vessels. In addition to potassium, plantains contain magnesium and fibre. Plantains can be baked, mashed and made into pancakes, but beware of plantain chips, which often serve up salt and fat.

  5. Chickpeas
Chickpeas have been eaten for thousands of years in many parts of the world. They are high in protein, but they also have much more to offer your skeleton, including calcium, magnesium and potassium. Use canned chickpeas – or soak dried chickpeas for a few hours and drain the liquid before cooking with them – to reduce the phytates, a substance in chickpeas that can hinder your absorption of calcium. Chickpeas can reduce cholesterol, prevent blood sugar spikes, and help control overeating by making you feel full.

  6. Oranges
Oranges are high in both potassium and vitamin C. Research shows that taking in vitamin C through diet is linked with better bone density and a lower risk of osteoporosis and hip fractures. Oranges also provide us with a bit of calcium, as well as a healthy dose of a carbohydrate compound called inositol that seems to increase the amount of calcium our bones absorb, playing a role in their strength and density.

  7. Blueberries
Several studies have suggested that the polyphenols in blueberries and other berry fruits can be linked to higher bone mass, possibly because of their antioxidant properties. According to this research, eating berries may offer some protection against bone loss as we age. But the benefits aren’t limited to older people: A study at the Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center found that young rats who were given blueberry powder developed more bone mass than their buddies. The polyphenols in berries seemed to boost the power of bone-building cells called osteoblasts.

EDITORIAL: “Questionable spending?” asks Councillor Lisa Robinson

There are many voters who oppose Councillor Robinson for some of her past statements and positions regarding marginalized and disregarded groups. However, the councillor does ask hard questions that probably need more discussion, debate and consideration.

Consider the $40,000 outlay on the Westshore Skate Park. Councillor Robinson opposes this expenditure. However, before joining this opposition, it may be better to ask how the City follows up any of such expenditures? Is this park used frequently? By many? Or does it sit empty and unused much of the time? Additionally, who assesses the quality of the work done and it is this assessment done? The promise in this artwork was that it had a long life. Just one year and it is beginning to show significant degradation and disintegration.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Could Councillor Robinson be ticking productively in her questioning these kind of expenditures?

  10. How is City dealing with the growth of traffic congestion?
    – Ashe emphasized that the City is very aware of the worrying traffic problems and again emphasized the city planning deals with road widening programs, such as Whites Road to Taunton Rd., promotion of public transit use;
FIRE SAFETY: Ashe emphasized that fire response is a shared responsibility. In case of a major fire, regional and other city fire departments respond cooperatively, so it is not a concern left to the local Fire Department only.
  11. What is City doing to reduce increase in HATE incidents?
    – The City is concerned about this and has programs to help educate Councillors regarding racism and bigotry;
    – The city urges that it is a social-based concern and that all residents need to consider taking on responsibility per person to support the philosophy of Diversity, Equity and Integrity within our city and society
  12. Are there any thoughts of bringing back “Politics 101”?
[ ‘Politics 101’ was a City-based program to help people learn about the Municipal government and politics. It ran for 5 weeks.]
    – Ashe endorsed the value of the past program and said the City may need to consider repeating the program at some time.
  13. When is the ‘new’ City Website scheduled for launching?
    – once again, no date is available for the launch of the newly revised City website, though repeatedly, the launch date is claimed to be Fall 2024.

______________

Town halls, as done by the Mayor and some City Councillors, are always very informative for those who attend. However, the problem, as in elections, is that no matter how much publicity, promotion and persuasion the City tries, the response is always low, 15-20%,

The City repeatedly reiterates that information about City management and processes is published on the City Website and it continually urges residents to access that. Internet access to the City website and assistance with that access are available at the public libraries.

The City Website
Repeated complaints about the complexity and obscurity of the City website have been heard. The website has improved significantly over the past few months, with improved search tool results being one example. The City needs to continue improving the site.

However, city residents are responsible for accessing the website information. They need to practice and explore the city website so they become better informed about the City.

Furthermore, again, the City repeats that a new website is in the works, launch scheduled for later in 2024.

Simplicity and Clarity of information
A significant problem with publishing City information on the website is that the presentation is too complicated and difficult to navigate. Much of the City website information is unnecessarily complicated and presented in an incomprehensible way for many. Financial information must be presented in ways more citizens can understand, not just accountants and bankers.

The city website publishers must consider the residents more when presenting material. Much of the material is too difficult for many to comprehend easily. It must be reviewed, revised, and modified so it is easier to read and understand.

Councillor shortfalls regarding local information
Too few councillors provide easily found, easily accessed information about their local constituency. The Mayor and some Councillors publish newsletters but we need more of this. Providing this material digitally online is still the best practical means of communication. Increasingly, institutions, corporations and political bodies are using digital services. Digital information is becoming the norm rather than the exception. Print material is fast becoming quaint history. It is incumbent on the populace to learn how to use digital material and accessibility to it but in that light, it is incumbent that the councillors provide more.

The Future of Town Halls
Like the proverbial horse and water drinking, these Town Halls need to continue. They are a tremendously valuable opportunity for residents to learn about their city. Perhaps the benefits of those who attend will trickle down and encourage others to attend. We may never reach the passive, less interested residents, but we must continue making the effort to engage them. We owe it to everyone to do so.

PICKERING: celebrates reopening of revitalized Waterfront Trail

Today, the City of Pickering, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), and Trans Canada Trail (TCT) were joined by community members to celebrate the reopening of Pickering’s popular Waterfront Trail at Bruce Handscomb Memorial Park.

The trail, originally constructed in the 1960s, was narrow, steep, and posed significant sightline issues, ultimately resulting in safety and accessibility concerns for the portion between the north side of Bruce Handscomb Memorial Park and Elvira Court. In recent years, the area has also faced severe erosion due to environmental conditions.

In an effort to resolve the safety issues and restore the area, the trail was closed from winter 2023 to spring 2024 for reconstruction. The revitalized space now boasts several improvements, including:

  • 120 metres of new 3-metre-wide accessible asphalt path
  • Two precast concrete retaining walls
  • Upgraded pathway lighting
  • Erosion management controls along the trail edge
  • Tactile indicator plates, aiding individuals with visual impairments in transitioning between the sidewalk and city street
  • Planting of native trees and shrubs

The total cost of the project was approximately $765,000 and included a $150,000 grant from TCT and a $31,000 contribution from TRCA.

Project costs included the new trail design, construction, restoration works, and slope stabilization/erosion repair.

Quotes:

“Pickering’s waterfront is the shimmering jewel of our city, enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors each year. These remarkable enhancements reaffirm our collective commitment to creating accessible, safe, and vibrant outdoor spaces for generations to experience. On behalf of the City of Pickering, I extend heartfelt gratitude to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and Trans Canada Trail for their generous support of these restoration efforts, safeguarding our shared outdoor spaces and enriching community well-being.”

– Mayor Kevin Ashe, City of Pickering

OLYMPICS: ‘Troubled waters’ swamping the show

Water’s putting a damper on France’s show: rain, E Coli in the Sienne but the show goes on.

Rain poured down on the opening day, spoiling some of the performances, making some of them dangerous to perform but the performers, many clad in plastic ponchos, shouldered on. The more risky events like skateboarding were cancelled.

The rain also stirred up the E Coli bacteria in the Sienne, thereby having the IOC question the health risks to participant in swimming events in the river. The IOC executives are hoping the water cleaning system will improve conditions within a short period of time.

Finally, security has been very effective thus far with nothing extraordinary taking place at the competitions but beyond the borders of Paris, France’s national railroad system was derailed by vandals damaging switching controls and other vandalism. Damage was of such a level that train travel out of and into Paris was terminated for a number of days while the authorities investigated who was responsible for the terrorist activity. Repair crews got the trains running again within a couple of days.

France has budgeted £350million for security. It has proven very effective so far as security presence is seen everywhere, all the time, from police boats on the Sienne to mounted constabulary trotting in the streets of Paris. Bravo France; woe is us world!

POLITICS USA: Full text of Pres Joe Biden’s latest address to the nation

My fellow Americans, I’m speaking to you tonight from behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. In this sacred space, I’m surrounded by portraits of extraordinary American presidents. Thomas Jefferson wrote the immortal words that guide this nation. George Washington, who showed us presidents are not kings. Abraham Lincoln, who implored us to reject malice. Franklin Roosevelt, who inspired us to reject fear.

I revere this office, but I love my country more.

It’s been the honor of my life to serve as your president. But in the defense of democracy, which is at stake, I think it’s more important than any title.

I draw strength and I find joy in working for the American people, but this sacred task of perfecting our union is not about me. It’s about you, your families, your futures. It’s about we the people, and we can never forget that. And I never have.

I’ve made it clear that I believe America is at an inflection point, one of those rare moments in history when the decisions we make now will determine our fate of our nation and the world for decades to come.

America is going to have to choose between moving forward or backward, between hope and hate, between unity and division. We have to decide, do we still believe in honesty, decency, respect, freedom, justice and democracy? In this moment, we can see those we disagree with not as enemies, but as fellow Americans. Can we do that? Does character in public life still matter?

I believe you know the answer to these questions because I know you, the American people, and I know this, we are a great nation because we are a good people.

When you elected me to this office, I promised to always level with you, to tell you the truth. And the truth, the sacred cause of this country, is larger than any one of us, and those of us who cherish that cause cherish it so much, a cause of American democracy itself must unite to protect it.

You know, in recent weeks it’s become clear to me that I needed to unite my party in this critical endeavor. I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America’s future all merited a second term, but nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy, and that includes personal ambition.

So I’ve decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That’s the best way to unite our nation. I know there is a time and a place for long years of experience in public life, but there’s also a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices, yes, younger voices, and that time and place is now.

Over the next six months, I’ll be focused on doing my job as president. That means I’ll continue to lower costs for hard-working families, grow our economy. I’ll keep defending our personal freedoms and our civil rights, from the right to vote to the right to choose. I’ll keep calling out hate and extremism, make it clear there is no place, no place in America for political violence or any violence ever, period. I’m going to keep speaking out to protect our kids from gun violence, our planet from climate crisis, is the existential threat.

And I will keep fighting for my for my cancer moonshot, so we can end cancer as we know it because we can do it. And I’m going to call for Supreme Court reform because this is critical to our democracy, Supreme Court reform. You know, I will keep working to ensure America remains strong and secure and the leader of the free world.

I’m the first president in this century to report to the American people that the United States is not at war anywhere in the world. We’ll keep rallying a coalition of proud nations to stop Putin from taking over Ukraine and doing more damage. We’ll keep NATO stronger, and I’ll make it more powerful and more united than at any time in all of our history. I’ll keep doing the same for allies in the Pacific.

You know, when I came to office, the conventional wisdom was that China would inevitably surpass the United States. That’s not the case anymore. And I’m going to keep working to end the war in Gaza, bring home all the hostages and bring peace and security to the Middle East and end this war.

We’re also working around the clock to bring home Americans being unjustly detained all around the world. You know, we’ve come so far since my inauguration. On that day, I told you as I stood in that winter — we stood in a winter of peril and a winter of possibilities, peril and possibilities. We were in the grip of the worst pandemic in the century, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War, but we came together as Americans, and we got through it. We emerged stronger, more prosperous and more secure.

Today, we have the strongest economy in the world, creating nearly 16 million new jobs — a record. Wages are up, inflation continues to come down, the racial wealth gap is the lowest it’s been in 20 years. We’re literally rebuilding our entire nation, urban, suburban, rural and tribal communities. Manufacturing has come back to America.

We’re leading the world again in chips and science and innovation. We finally beat Big Pharma after all these years, to lower the cost of prescription drugs for seniors, and I’m going to keep fighting to make sure we lower the cost for everyone, not just seniors.

More people have health care today in America than ever before. And I signed one of the most significant laws helping millions of veterans and their families who were exposed to toxic materials. You know, the most significant climate law ever, ever in the history of the world, the first major gun safety law in 30 years. And today, violent crime rate is at a 50-year low.

We’re also securing our border. Border crossings are lower today than when the previous administration left office. And I’ve kept my commitment to appoint the first Black woman to the Supreme Court of the United States of America. I also kept my commitment to have an administration that looks like America and be a president for all Americans.

That’s what I’ve done. I ran for president four years ago because I believed, and still do, that the soul of America was at stake. The very nature of who we are was at stake and that’s still the case. America is an idea, an idea stronger than any army, bigger than any ocean, more powerful than any dictator or tyrant.

It’s the most powerful idea in the history of the world. That idea is that we hold these truths to be self-evident. We’re all created equal, endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. We’ve never fully lived up to it, to this sacred idea, but we’ve never walked away from it either and I do not believe the American people will walk away from it now.

In just a few months, the American people will choose the course of America’s future. I made my choice. I made my views known. I would like to thank our great Vice President Kamala Harris. She’s experienced, she’s tough, she’s capable. She’s been an incredible partner to me and a leader for our country. Now the choice is up to you, the American people.

When you make that choice, remember the words of Benjamin Franklin. It’s hanging on my wall here in the Oval Office, alongside the bust of Dr. King and Rosa Parks and Cesar Chavez. When Ben Franklin was asked as he emerged from the convention going on, whether the founders have given America a monarchy or republic, Franklin’s response was “a republic, if you can keep it.” A republic if you can keep it. Whether we keep our republic is now in your hands.

My fellow Americans, it’s been the privilege of my life to serve this nation for over 50 years. Nowhere else on earth could a kid with a stutter from modest beginnings in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Claymont, Delaware, one day sit behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office as President of the United States, but here I am. That’s what’s so special about America.

We are a nation of promise and possibilities, of dreamers and doers, of ordinary Americans doing extraordinary things. I’ve given my heart and my soul to our nation, like so many others. I’ve been blessed a million times in return with the love and support of the American people. I hope you have some idea how grateful I am to all of you.

The great thing about America is here kings and dictators do not rule, the people do. History is in your hands. The power is in your hands. The idea of America lies in your hands. We just have to keep faith, keep the faith and remember who we are. We’re the United States of America and there’s simply nothing, nothing beyond our capacity when we do it together.

So let’s act together, preserve our democracy. God bless you all and may God protect our troops. Thank you.

POLITICS USA: Harris, in the words of Dan Rather

If you want to learn about Kamala Harris, it helps to have some historical perspective. Sixty years ago this month, in the summer of 1964, our nation was still reeling from the assassination of a young president. John F. Kennedy had talked of wanting to pass civil rights legislation, but it was his successor, Lyndon Johnson, who made it happen in the wake of Kennedy’s death. The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which passed Congress and was signed into law in July of that year, banned discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, or national origin.

But the new law did not immediately bring equality or peace to America. I vividly remember witnessing that summer, which was the beginning of “civil unrest” across the nation but in reality was much worse. A cycle of violence ensued: Black Americans protesting inequality and unfair treatment by the police, the police being attacked and then retaliating. The summer of ‘64 was also known as “freedom summer,” reflecting a movement to register Black voters in the South. This effort, too, was met with violence, especially from the Ku Klux Klan.

It was into the chaos and change of 1964 that Kamala Harris was born in Oakland, California. Her Jamaican father, a Stanford economics professor, and Indian mother, a world-renowned scientist at Berkeley, did not shy away from political activism. Harris was bussed across town to an all-white elementary school. Her parents took her to civil rights protests throughout her childhood.

Harris grew up in this dichotomy, where she was encouraged to stand up and be heard while many were trying to silence her voice. It is from this history that Kamala Harris’s ethos was born: a belief that she had a responsibility to enact change. She has spent her career trying to do that, as a district attorney, state attorney general, senator, and vice president.

Harris is no stranger to America’s struggles with race. Those problems have pushed her to look forward. Yesterday, at her first campaign appearance as the presumptive nominee, her campaign theme was “we’re not going back,” a pointed and intentional contrast to “make America great again.”

Harris is a tough nut to crack, considering how long she has been in public life. She is a lawyer and prosecutor by trade and tends to keep things close to the vest. Her biographer says she has been underestimated because so few truly know her, even in the White House.

He shares a telling story about her childhood. When Harris was a young girl, a friend of hers was being abused by her stepfather. Harris told her mother, who took the girl in and got her help. Harris has said that this was a formative experience in her life and drove her to become a prosecutor. The story wasn’t a secret, nor did she shout it from the rooftops. Three years into the Biden administration, her colleagues there were surprised to hear of the story, which one could argue is a great narrative for a campaign, a great way to showcase a vice presidential candidate.

Perhaps Harris’s air of mystery is helping, at least for now. She has raised an astonishing amount of money since Joe Biden dropped out of the race: $126 million as of this writing. At the very least, she has energized an electorate desperate for something shiny and new.

America has made progress toward racial justice over these many decades, but the expected nomination of Kamala Harris has brought to the fore an ugly undercurrent that celebrates and normalizes hate. Despite her extensive credentials, Harris has been called the DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) candidate by sitting members of Congress. She has been maligned by the future Republican vice presidential nominee, among others, for choosing not to have children. A 2020 study that tracked more than 335,000 instances of misogynistic attacks against 13 women running for office found that 78% of them were aimed at Harris. Trump has called her crazy and unfit and ridicules her laugh.

The differences between the two candidates could not be more stark. Donald Trump wants to go back to what he considers a better time. He has not convinced me of when that might have been. Kamala Harris says she wants to look forward and forge a new future. The question is, will that theme and her personal history win in November?

POLITICS USA: personal opinion about VP nominee

The USA isn’t ready for what would be the ideal Democratic ticket for the Presidential Campaign…..TWO women:  Kamala Harris and Gina Raimondo

A bunch of rednecks?
Are the majority of American emotionally inert pools of narrow minded ignorance? Could they ever consider electing two women as leaders of their country?

The chances of their electing two women to lead their country are as likely possibility as T**** telling the truth.

Gina Raimondo is the Secretary of Commerce. She is a pragmatic, down-to-earth, intelligent administrator who would be a great second in command and prove herself worthy of becoming president. She is 53 years old.

T****reveals conversation with Secret Service director as bi-partisan calls grow for her to resign

Former President T****was shot in the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024. (REUTERS/Brendan McDermid)

Former President T**** spoke about his conversation with Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to Fox News’ Jesse Watters on Monday night, saying she was nice, though somebody should have made sure nobody was on the roof a gunman accessed before opening fire at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

She came to see me actually. And, well, I mean, it went very nicely. She was very nice, I thought. But, you know, somebody should have made sure there was nobody on that roof,” T**** said. “That roof was a dead aim right onto the stage. And they said they didn’t have the manpower for it, which is crazy. They said 130 yards is like sinking a one-foot putt. It’s considered really close.

“It sounds like a lot, but it’s really, from that standpoint, it’s a very, you know, it’s very close. And I was surprised by that actually. They said it’s really, it’s a – a bad shot would usually hit the target. And so I mean, it’s got to be, somebody’s got to be there. And it’s essentially a flat roof,” T**** added. “ I mean, I noticed that she said, well, this is a slope roof where you think of like a barn where you have, this thing had just a little – a little upswing in it, a few degrees. This was a not – it essentially was a flat roof.

So, I don’t know. Somebody gave her false information when she talked about the slope of the roof.

“I thought she was very nice. But, you know, you have to answer why couldn’t I have stayed off the stage for five minutes while they do their work,” he continued. “Why couldn’t, you know, how does a situation happen where a roof that’s plainly in sight from the location where I was speaking, why would somebody not have seen that?”

The renowned “AMAZING GRACE” has a history of racism.

At one time, Blacks were forbidden from using white keys on the piano. Can you believe it? Watch this video and learn. Then ask yourself, have we moved the needle of RACISM and BIGOTRY very far? What do we need to change to move it more, completely?

Unless you’re stone, this video is very moving.

BEAUTIFUL RUINS, Jess Walter

BEAUTIFUL RUINS

“Disjointed” is one of the words that comes to mind when I examine “Beautiful Ruins” by Jess Walter. Also, ‘confusing,’ ‘incoherent,’ ‘disorganized.’ Simply put, this book was hard to follow. It reminded me of a John Travolta movie, ‘Get Shorty’ which was a depiction of Hollywood possibly at its most true, sexist, corrupt and scandal-filled, stereotypical views of Tinsel Town at its arguably most real. However, as true or false as that premise may be, Jess Walter’s novel continues this stereotypical image of Hollywood. In a fictitious, smaller than small village on the Ligurian coast of Italy, our hero Pasquale narrates one of many stories of which this novel is composed; stories about Hollywood stars, WWII events, move sets and Italian fishing villages. Each story evolves with a basis founded on stereotypical views: Hollywood, an environment of hypocrites, selfish, greedy movie moguls struggling to retain their aura of fame after their careers have crashed on the cascading shores of declining Nielsen ratings; Italian coastal towns with cultural traditions being eroded by the new liberalism of the post war era; Hollywood stars of old clashing with the current wannabe’s over script rights, cast positioning and the self aggrandizement of a typical Hollywood star; old world cultures being displaced by modern philosophies of questionable integrity, values and principles.

The reader can never be certain as to the destination of the novel, only that it questions the validity of beliefs, philosophies and value systems of the past.

What did I dislike about the book?

I struggled to understand what I was reading, not the words, but the context of each chapter. How did it fit in with the preceding and the following chapters? What was its point? Did the chapter have a point? One could never be certain that there was a point. Each character invoked the reader’s sympathy, whether it was for their life style, or for the challenges they were facing in their lives, or for the events surrounding them now. The current chapter’s central figure could be experiencing a dangerous war time event, a declining movie career, ongoing writer’ block, the debilitation of old age, a serious illness, the dissolution of a relationship, or simply suffering depression as they live a life of loneliness. Every chapter has a central character evoking these feelings of sympathy and empathy and the emotional descent never reaches a positive resolution.

The reader simply ends up feeling sorry for whichever character is being written about in the particular chapter. The characters are not vital to Walter’s theme of ‘life is a bowl of sour cherries, so live with it;’ not even an acceptable redemption of ‘when life gives you lemons….lemonade.’ This book is lemon after lemon after lemon with the only thing being squeezed is the reader’s mind. I felt no empathy for any of the characters. I felt they were people who viewed their lives as downward spirals passively accepting the cards fate had dealt them and chosing to do nothing positive or constructive to change anything. It is a depressing book if one reads it with conviction and acceptance.

What I liked about the book?

Walter is a gifted, creative writer. Throughout the book, his narrative is interspersed with ideas, phrases and vocabulary are intellectually unique and intriguing. For example, “There are only two good outcomes for a quest like this, the hope of the serendipitous savant – sail for Asia and stumble on America – and the hope of scarecrows and tin men.” Read it repeatedly, and it still boggles the mind as to what Walters is trying to say, but give him credit for creativity. As a writer, I would be hard pressed to create phrasing as unique and as original.

Capito molto, ma non tutto.

I understood a lot but not everything. Because I have a passing knowledge of Italian, I enjoyed how the narrative had Italian interspersed throughout. It was fun to test my own capability with the language but I was thankful for Walter translating what was being said within a sentence or so to either confirm my Italian comprehension or to correct it. I am most gratified that my Italian is not totally eradicated into linguistic detritus washed up on the beach of forgotten language study.

I also enjoyed the many settings changes of the book: the Hollywood movie/TV world, the romantically rugged Cinque Terre coastline of Liguria and the plays within the novel based on script proposals offered to one of the main characters of the book. These various setting changes gave the book a changing tempo, one moment slow and almost lethargic, the next, eclectic and excited as stereotypically depicted Hollywood production settings are in the movies and on TV today. Still it made for a livelier read than any other setting might have.

AMEDOA

Would I recommend the book?

No, I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone, not even the loneliest, most bored, solitary inhabitant of the loneliest place in the world, an empty mind. The story may challenge with its vocabulary, its settings, its scenes, its dialogue but it bogs down in its journey to its incomprehensible and incoherent destination. I got lost as to what was happening at the end of the book…was it a dream? Was it an illusion? Was it a nostalgic reminiscence? I don’t know. What I do know is that the book is very unsatisfying as a read.

EDITORIALS: JOE BIDEN

Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential campaign may be indescribably painful, maybe as painful as his family’s tragic losses. However, it should be ranked as the greatest example of humility and personal sacrifice in American history.

This man, president of the United States, holder of the most powerful political office in the world, chose to sacrifice his position for the good of his country. Such patriotism and national loyalty is incomparable anywhere.

It was Biden’s decision — his alone, even though the number of people pushing him out was increasing hourly. He held his ground and no constitutional law could remove him from office. The 25th Amendment did not apply as he had not been impeached.

Biden’s decision to withdraw was personal and his alone. He chose to do so for the good of his country, sacrificing the greatest power he could ever have personally for the sake of his nation.

Joe Biden should stand shoulder to shoulder with the greatest Presidents of the United States.

TECHNOLOGY: Here’s what the “OUTAGE” hullabaloo was all about

Ever see something like one of those blue displays on your computer?

They are known as the “Blue Screen of Death” in computer parlance, BSOD,  and they mean your computer has crashed, your computer system has stopped operating. You cannot do any computer work on your machine.

Recently, computer systems across the whole world crashed because some idiot IT person/group of software engineers, ‘Mr. Know-it-alls’ failed to test their newly created security app before releasing it to its world-wide customers. The result: computer systems crashing everywhere in the world. Hospitals, police departments, airlines, businesses, hotels chains, restaurant services, even emergency services responding to 911 in some areas. Shut down completely, no services operating. No responses to 911 calls, no police dispatching, no scheduling of surgeries, hospital life support systems shut down.

The software engineers behind this snafu should be fired on the sport with no severance packages at all. This was a first class bungle with life threatening repercussions world wide.

POLITICS: It may seem futile….but we need to continue fighting this purveyor of lies

It may seem futile and it is becoming repetitive and boring, but we must continue. Otherwise, the T**** Cult  (TC) will win.

The TC won’t stop and the more they repeat their endless lies and misinformation, more people begin to succumb to the message…either because of boredom or some by persuasion.

We will not stop speaking out against this politician.

Politicians are snakes, alligators, bears, sharks…take your pick. There is no such thing as a clean politician, just various degrees of corruption. There may start innocent and virgin-like, but soon after being elected, they begin their transformation, accepting gifts, graft, money, favours and as they grow in power and stature, they become the bullies that T**** has become.

POLITICS: Repub Ntl Convention….was Melania even there?

I thought a lot of people must have holes in their heads to believe in D.J. T****, but now I know it’s true!

And by the way, did you notice Melania wasn’t even there…or was she? Better check out the crowd carefully.

Will she be there on the last night when the big T**d gives his keynote speech? Don’t be surprised if she isn’t there. After all, she’s got her prenup signed already, probably anguishing that she didn’t hold out for more.

Likely, Melania will cash in most while still married to the ‘golf pro.’ Otherwise, a divorce must mean she cashes in much less. So it’s better to remain married, cash it to the max, and never see the j**k.

What a life. It is possibly very wealthy but miserable as hell. The classic living in a gilded cage and not able to tweak about any benefits that might go along with that life.

Ohhhh misery!!!

SHORT STORY: The gringo gulch gap in Puerto Vallarta

The gap of gringo gulch

My name is Eduardo Castillo. I would like to tell you a story about old Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, a sad but true story. It happened over 50 years ago. After having worked in the hospitality industry in Europe, the USA and Canada, I came back home and got my dream job as head bartender in The River Café in the heart of the city. My story begins on an incredibly humid night, where even the iguanas were sweating.

DSC_4936

The bar was hot: our band’s music pulsating out through the open windows gave passersby a free concert of the best syncopated rhythms in all of the city. No mariachi stuff, just outstanding Cuban jazz. Cuban jazz greats like Tito Puente, Hillario Duran, and Jane Bunnett would have loved jamming with our band. The café was Vallarta’s hottest night club: great music, terrific food and famous patrons too.

Then, she appeared in the bar’s entrance, a goddess clad in gauzy, sun-white gossamer. I caught my breath. So did many others.

She was stunning. Her white diaphanous dress screamed sensuality, its bodice squeezing her voluptuous breasts into pneumatic orbs that every guy in the place ogled. The narrowness of her waistline complemented her curvaceous body perfectly. She didn’t walk between the tables; she floated, an erotic visual banquet. She twirled to a bar stool with the flourish of a Spanish dancer, her skirt billowing out like that of flamenco dancer spinning to the clack of castanets. Her regal posture converted the stool into a throne.

The new monarch commanded, “Casa Noble, doble, senor. Sin hielo por favor,” a hint of an American accent. Quickly, I pulled down the vintage anejo and began polishing a clean glass in hopes of masking the trembling in my hands. I poured a generous double of the amber liquid.

“Gracias senor y su nombre?”

“Yo soy Eduardo, senorita, but I speak English.” I stuttered in reply, mesmerized by her majestic magnificence.

“Muy bien Eduardo, gracias.”

2014-09-04_12h11_17

Her beautiful face rivaled any angel’s, incredibly white alabaster skin as if sculpted from the finest Thassos marble. Plato would have written, “She is beauty.” Such beauty is not of this world. I was beyond bewitched. I was awestruck.

“De nada senorita….?” I mumbled, an intentional hesitation hoping she would respond to the verbal ploy with her name which I actually knew. I just wanted to hear her say it.

“Elizabeth. Elizabeth Taylor.” She read my hesitation correctly.

The air gasped from my lungs hearing her say her name. I knew who she was. Everyone in Vallarta knew who she was.

Elizabeth Taylor was in Vallarta because her lover, the famous Richard Burton, was filming ‘Night of the Iguana’ in nearby Mismaloya.

2014-09-04_12h07_51

Brash laughter and raucous voices preceded a group of Hollywood VIP’s as they barged their way into the bar, most of them were easily recognized because of the heavy local newspaper coverage: Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr, and of course, Burton, himself.

Another man dominated the gaggling group, kind of above them, superior in some way. He shouted, “Liz, there you are! We didn’t see you in the restaurant. Did you eat already?”

She turned to acknowledge him, the light in the bar caught the marvelous colour of her eyes, not dark blue, not ebony black, but an unusual purple, a deep violet. Then she looked back at me, the force of her overpowering gaze almost knocked me over. My legs wobbled. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

“Eduardo, un otro por favor.”

She looked back at the man who had shouted the greeting, “John, I’ll have you know I have been here for the last hour waiting. Where have all of you been?”

2014-09-04_12h12_18

John was John Huston, the well-known director of the movie. Though his gray hair was thinning and his face grizzled with gray stubble, he still projected distinction and sophistication commanding subordination and acquiescence.

He sagged himself next to Taylor, leaned over and kissed her cheek. Burton scowled at him and shouldered himself between them.

“Don’t worry Richard. We all recognize your staked claim.”

Richard Burton, a handsome man, wavy brown hair, medium height, good physique, neither muscular nor flabby, slid his hand over Taylor’s shapely backside and kissed her with surprising gruffness.

“Hello, darling!”

“Calm yourself, Dick,” Elizabeth replied, intentionally using the nickname with its salacious innuendo.

“Were you able to film any scenes today, love?”

“Film any scenes? Shit, I could barely stand up. The damn leg hurt like hell, even after a week,” Burton responded angrily.

Huston, pointing at Taylor’s drink, nodded at me to indicate it as his order too. Then, he grumbled, “We couldn’t film a damn thing today because he could hardly move.”

“I’ll be better tomorrow, Big John. Not to worry, old boy!”

“Sure Richard,” replied Huston sarcastically.

Everyone in the bar knew how Burton had broken his ankle.

2014-09-04_12h06_34

He was renting the hacienda at Calle Zaragoza, 39, while filming Iguana. Taylor’s rented house was directly across the street. She’d come to Vallarta to keep Burton company while he was making the movie. More likely, she came to keep him out of trouble, woman trouble. Burton had a reputation as a real womanizer, flirting with every one of his leading ladies until he was successful.

At the end of each day’s shooting, Burton was chauffeured home where he began his nightly imbibing ─ copious amounts of his favourite tequila, Jose Cuervo Especial. For medicinal purposes, he claimed. “I prefer scotch but this Mexican food burns my stomach. Tequila puts out the fire.”

After a couple of hours, Burton was usually really drunk but his libido was still churning at its peak level. In this condition, he would lurch across ‘gringo gulch,’ to Taylor’s hacienda. However, there was one drawback to this advantageous location of their houses. It was the street itself.

This street, in the heart of Vallarta, discouraged traffic. It was extremely narrow and exceedingly steep. Its surface of smooth round stones was a major problem. It was ideal for durability but horrendous for pedestrians and outright dangerous for the tequila-soused Burton. If he successfully traversed it on any given night, it was by sheer good luck. On his last crossing, a rainy night, his luck gave out. The nearby hospital recognized their famous patient, diagnosed a broken ankle and put him into a walking cast. Because the pain was so excruciating even just in standing, the doctors prescribed heavy doses of painkillers. These wreaked havoc with his memory causing him to forget his lines. Without medication however, the pain was unbearable making any filming impossible to the great dismay of Huston.

The first time an accident occurred Huston found ingenious ways to continue filming. He shot scenes that did not need Burton. Production slowed but it continued.

Life in Vallarta went on as usual, slow and steady, hot and humid, just like Burton and Taylor. Each night, Burton, awash in tsunamis of tequila, staggered across the street banging on Taylor’s door.

Knock, knock! Taylor’s housekeeper, Juanita, would open the entrance a bit. Seeing who it was, she greeted him in her usual pleasant way, “Hola, Senor Burton. Como esta?”

Burton slurred a reply, “Hey Juanita, tell Lizzie, her beau’s here!” Then he’d push his way past Juanita and stumble over to Taylor’s bar where he would splash out another tequila.

“How are you doing tonight, Richard?” Taylor asked, her tone like a mother who is about to reprimand her child but wants to do it in a gentler, oblique way rather than scolding her offspring directly. Taylor was never pleased to see Burton like this, but she never chastised him for it. Maybe because she herself drank nearly as much, but seemed to tolerate it better. Maybe because she knew criticizing him would only result in his drinking even more, faster. Maybe because she simply loved him, pure and simple, no matter what condition he was in. In any case, she would walk up to him, passionately kiss him on the lips and say, “Pour one for me too, Dickie.”

Huston, a non-religious man, gave prayers of gratitude for the surprising speed with which Burton’s ankle healed, or at least enough so that Burton could stand relatively pain-free. Shooting resumed though restricted to above the waist or at best, above the knees shots because of the lower leg cast. Filming continued. So did the nightly visitations, each crossing stuttered and staggered progress, premonitions of what was to come. Still, Huston was happy. The producers were happy. Burton and Taylor were happy. Everything was right in Vallarta and I worked nightly listening to every gossipy tidbit brought in by the American film’s boisterous crewmembers. What I didn’t hear directly, I filled with my own guesswork.

Weeks later, Huston strode into my bar with a group of men who I later learned were the chief cinematographer and the film’s producers.

“John, we’re behind schedule and losing a shit load of money,” complained Ray Stark, the movie’s biggest producer.

“OK Ray, OK. But we never stopped filming,” Huston replied, defensively.

“No, true. You were smart how you overcame that ankle disaster but when he broke his fuckin’ arm…that was real shit. You couldn’t shoot around that. Scenic credibility tanked. You gotta find a way of saving this asshole from any more accidents,” continued Stark.

“What do you want me to do? Wrap him up in cotton batten?” Huston rebutted.

“How about telling Taylor to leave Vallarta?” Stark suggested.

“Are you nuts, Ray? If Taylor left, Burton would pack himself into her suitcase. Our movie would be finished. Forget that idea. It won’t happen.”

“Well, you gotta fuckin’ do something. This latest setback puts us on the brink. We’re really over budget.”

The producers were really upset this time because when Burton fell he smashed his face on the stone way, splitting open his cheek. Makeup couldn’t mask the gash.

“What do you want me to do? Buy up all the tequila in Vallarta? Hell, he’d switch to scotch. That lush would drink aftershave if he had to!” retorted Huston.

“We don’t give a shit what you do, John. He can’t have another accident.”

Huston ordered another round of drinks while Stark continued his badgering for a solution to Burton’s repetitive accidents. “Why doesn’t he just move in with her? Then, there would be no need for those damn nightly street crossings.”

“Liz refuses to let him; says she needs her space, her privacy,” replied Huston.

“What bullshit! He’s there every night as is. Hey, why not buy one of the adjoining houses?”

“We looked into it after he broke his wrist. The old lady on the east side, in her 80’s, well, she likes living beside a famous Hollywood star. She refuses to sell. The old guy on the other side won’t tell us why he won’t sell but every day, he’s out on his balcony as Liz sunbathes by her pool.”

“Well, we gotta find a solution. We just can’t have him crossing that fuckin’ street every night, smashed as hell. What are we gonna do?”

“I’ll think of something. But right now I gotta get back home. I really need to recharge my batteries because tomorrow I have to try to convince Burton to double his normal work output to make up for lost time. That’ll be a hell of a battle. I’m going over to his place right now to work on him.”

“Christ John, good luck with that. The harder he works, the more he drinks.”

The group signalled for the check and asked me to call two cabs.

“Calle Zaragoza, 39, por favor, senor,” I directed Huston’s cab driver.

When he arrived, Huston paid the cab, got out, and as he walked to the entrance of Burton’s home, he thought to himself, ‘Geez, this really is a narrow street. You can almost hold hands without leaving your own doorway. And such a lovely neighbourhood, nice houses. I can understand why Richard and Liz like living here.’

‘The only damn problem is this street with those ridiculous round stones. Simple construction, sure, lasts forever, but dreadful to walk on, especially for a drunk.’ thought Huston as he rang the doorbell.

The door opened a little. Recognizing Huston, Burton’s stocky Mexican housekeeper opened it fully and cheerily greeted him, “Hola Senor Huston. Como esta esta noche?”

“Muy bien, Consuela. Donde est senor Burton?” he asked.

Consuela extended her open hand signalling that Burton was across the street.

“Gracias, Consuela,” responded Huston. Carefully crossing the street, Huston thought to himself again, ‘Shit! What a stupid way to build a street. Even a sober person could kill themselves.’

From Taylor’s courtyard, Huston could hear loud voices coming from the center of the house.

“Blimey, look what the wind just blew in. Come on in, old man. What can I get ya?” said Burton, his tequila laced words, barely comprehensible.

“Just a Coke, Richard. I am surprised you’re still up,” adding, in an almost admonishing tone, “You know we’ll be shooting a long day tomorrow?”

“Argh, not to worry, old man. Your number one star will be ready, cock-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to rip, early as hell.”

“I sure hope so ‘cause we’re badly behind schedule and the producers are beginning to really squawk.”

“Fuck ‘em! Cheap bunch of fuckin’ Jews, always worrying about their goddamn profit.”

Huston grimaced at the racist slur, deciding it best not to respond.

“Oh don’t worry John. I was about to take him to bed anyway,” Liz said, her words much clearer than Burton’s.

“Well then, best I leave so you both can get to bed early,” replied Huston as he gulped down his Coke. “I really need some sleep myself.”

Huston turned toward the courtyard, hesitated and turned back toward the famous couple. Looking directly at Taylor, he said, “Liz, it’s crucial he get some real rest tonight because we’ve got nearly a dozen scenes to shoot tomorrow.”

Liz understood Huston’s not-so-well-hidden meaning. She put her hand behind the director’s waist and gently guided him toward the courtyard. More words weren’t needed.

Liz returned just as Richard was pouring another tequila.

“Oh no, big guy! Come on to bed. I want to feel my big guy up against me.”

“Hey baby, … I can be up against you right out here just as easily,” he garbled awkwardly pawing her generous breast. Liz moved his hand to her waist adding, “Come on darling, let’s go to bed. I’ll give you a little honey.”

In the 60’s, Vallarta was little more than an overgrown village and Mismaloya, about thirty minutes away, still an ocean side jungle with unreliable hydro, no running water and no decent accommodation for any Hollywood type. Therefore, everyone came back to Vallarta at night via either the studio bus or a local cab, invariably stopping at the favoured watering hole, The River Café.

Huston was home in minutes, bed seconds later. He was exhausted, from the day’s work and from the stress of trying to defend Burton in the discussion at the café. Burton’s boozing continued to turmoil him but his fatigue overpowered him quickly.

Just before dawn, Huston woke up with a start. “I got it. I got it. I know how I’ll solve the accidents problem. After breakfast, he stopped by Burton’s house and asked Consuela if Jesus had arrived yet.

“Si senor. Hee ees een da keechen,” she told him.

Jesus Valdez was Burton’s gardener/handyman. He was a slow moving Mexican of indeterminate age, but old for sure. Huston had concluded long ago that Valdez was worth his weight in gold because he was the one who had helped Burton many times before when an accident happened. He massaged Burton’s bruised hip after a fall, taped his thigh after another and ice packed numerous sprains and strains. Now Huston had dreamed up a solution to Burton’s accidents and he wanted to see if Valdez could help him make his idea a reality.

“Si Senor Huston. I know someone who can help us. Manuel Artega, he ees a good hombre. Eeee get job done…queek and cheap too senor.”

“How long?” asked Huston.

“I don know for sure senor, but I guess wahhn week, maybe.”

“Quicker, if possible, Jesus,” Huston replied as he thought about the production costs. A speedy solution was crucial.

“Senor, eef one has money, anything is possible een Vallarta. We weel haffa to oil some hands but wee will do it senor.”

“Good Jesus. Here, get started and make the necessary arrangements. We need this completed as quickly as possible,” added Huston as he pushed a wad of money into Valdez’ hand.

Valdez gulped the rest of his morning hot chocolate, tepid now after the discussion with Huston. No matter, his new task was more important than his usual leisurely breakfast with the buxom and personable Consuela.

“Look Manuel, Huston will likely give you a bonus if you can do it in a couple of days.”

“Two days? Impossible. I need a week at least,” insisted Manuel Artega, owner of Muros de Manuel, a construction company in Vallarta. “I have some really good men who might be able to do it. With the right money, the job could be done in three days. But no less. No way. Time is needed for setting.”

“Muy bien, amigo.”

Huston had one more issue to resolve: to convince Burton to stay with him while his solution was being carried out. He was guessing that if Burton discovered the plan, he would see it as an attack on his capabilities, maybe even his manhood. He hoped he could convince Liz to help him persuade Burton to change residences for just a few days.

“What a fantastic idea, John. Richard would never agree to it if we told him. You know how big his ego is but he’ll accept it when it’s done. I am sure of it.”

Vallarta works like most Mexican cities, almost anything is possible if there’s enough money behind it. Huston’s idea would contravene city bylaws intended to protect the historical heritage of the city. A permit for this job would be difficult but the financial ‘lubricant’ was adequate. The job began straightaway.

Artega’s eight man crew started work on both sides of the street simultaneously. Time was of the essence. Late on the third day, they applied the final coat of bright white paint. Job completed as promised and in an amazing three days.

Liz looked up at the work and said, “What a fantastic job! Nobody will complain about this possibly looking out of place. Richard will love it, I am sure.”

The next day, Huston made the announcement to the entire crew at breakfast, “Hey people, today I am going to give you all a break ‘cause you have been working so hard. We’re cutting off at noon. Go home, get some rest, relax for the day.” Everybody cheered as if it were New Year’s Eve on the Malecon. Everyone was tired. The long days and the tension of the frequent filming stoppages due to Burton’s many accidents were exhausting. Everyone understood the challenges Huston faced in dealing with his vitriolic star. Still, they were all grateful for the break.

“I thought you had producers breathing down your neck, Hustie, old boy?” Burton asked Huston.

“Yeah, well, I’ve got them under control for the moment, Richard. Tonight we’re not worrying about them. I am taking you out for dinner and Eduardo’s got a really special anejo he’s been saving just for you. But first, when we get back to town, I have something I want to show you back at your place.”

“Blimey, old chap. I love surprises.”

The cab bringing the duo back to Burton’s house turned the corner at Calle Zaragoza and Huston directed the cab driver to stop right there, “Aqui senor. Stop!”

Burton was surprised at their stopping short of his place but at Huston’s directive, he got out of the cab. As he turned toward his house, he exclaimed, “What the fu…? What is that?”

Burton looked up, his mouth agape. His house was now conjoined with Taylor’s by a beautiful covered bridge, the sun reflecting brilliantly off its gleaming white sides, the red brick trim blending it flawlessly with the Mexican styled surroundings. It looked beautiful as if it had been built as part of the original homes. It suited its surroundings perfectly.

“That my friend is your Bridge of Sighs,” said Huston, with great pride. “Liz made it especially for you. Just so you could get over to her place more quickly each night.”

It never dawned on Burton the real reason for the bridge or its real builder. Such is love!

“It looks just like a miniaturized Ponte dei Sospiri in Venice,” cooed Burton. “That Liz, she can be a real bitch, but such a romantic one.”

So there you have it. The story of Puerto Vallarta’s very own Bridge of Sighs. Sadly today, John Huston is gone, Burton and Taylor are gone, even the bridge is gone. Only the memories remain.

PICKERING: Farmer’s Market cancelled, July 16, due to deluge of rain

Many people were deeply disappointed in the cancellation of the Pickering Farmers Market due to the deluge of rain that poured on our area all morning. Mother Nature played with us by deluging in the morning, cancelling the possibility of erecting any sales tents and then shining brightly with sunshine glory in the afternoon.

Mother Nature we ain’t luvin’ ya right now. And there are large number of farmers and vendors who don’t have much to say about you right now either.

However, those of you who are passionate about purchase of fresh produce, find comfort with the many market alternatives available in our region:

HATE: Not much response from City and Councillors on issue of HATE … and it’s happening here too

Recently, we asked, “What were the Mayor and Councillors doing about hate-based incidents in our City?”

Well, it seems like they are doing nothing. That may not be true or fact, but we have not heard any response, public or otherwise, from the Mayor and his Council.

We know hate-tainted actions take place in the Council chambers, as evidenced by the anger-filled and offensive disregard for fellow Councillors that has taken place there in recent months. Angry words and insulting verbalizations are tossed into the council discussion like bacon bits on a salad. Throw it on. Disregard whether or not it is PC (politically correct).

If this attitude is prevalent in Council meetings, one wonders what endeavours, actions, or policies this council has initiated to diminish the hate or ugliness that is growing in our city and society.

We did hear from one politician who felt our commentary was noteworthy, particularly after the Trump assassination attempt. Even the words ‘assassination attempt’ send shudders through the spine.

[An aside: You won’t hear it from any news media, especially not from CNN but read Trump’s lips when he fisted the air in justifiable anger at being shot. He was shouting, “F**k you, F**k you” and not “Fight! Fight!” as claimed by some media. Trump’s not part of the Dallas Cheerleaders’ squad. No more needs to be said.]

Our society always has the malevolent haters, some of whom have taken to violent action in support of their beliefs, from Caesar to Reagan, we have had people among us who went beyond hate resorting to violence in support of their causes. Today, these responses are more volatile, and technology is ever-expanding in capabilities. Never mind guns and assault rifles. Our hates now resort to more mundane weapons of assault, trucks, vans and cars. Too bad they haven’t dumbed things down to scooters and trikes.

And what are political leaders doing about all this hatred? What are our schools doing about it? It isn’t good enough to claim we have anti-hate policies and anti-hate school programs. Not when Sandy Hook, Orlando, Florida, and the like occur so frequently and readily.

Not only do we need real action against hate in our society, but we also need public accountability to demonstrate that we are winning the battle. Statistics show a significant decrease in these incidents. We don’t need to hear platitudes and lip service. We need action and real results. But many would say we aren’t getting it. Just ask Trump or a few parents in Sany Hook.

PICKERING: City’s Animal Services receives $35,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada

Lots of purring and barking coming from the staff and residents of Pickering’s Animal Services. They just received a $35,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada.

Lindsey Narraway, Supervisor, Animal Services, cheered loudly about the good news, “We are immensely thankful to PetSmart Charities of Canada for their generous grant. In 2023, we cared for 427 animals at the shelter. This funding will significantly enhance our ability to provide essential care and find loving homes for even more animals, meaning more lives saved, and brighter futures ahead for the animals in our community.”

EDITORIAL: Councillor Lisa Robinson…..again….

Again, there’s another news story with Pickering Councillor Lisa Robinson at its core. The Toronto Star writes a lengthy, comprehensive story about the council chaos in Pickering, and it is a sad commentary on where society is going rather than the ineffectiveness of political leaders.

Society has lost all idea of the meaning of respect, social decorum and mutual dignity. Not that long ago, “Yes sir,” “No ma’am,” and “Excuse me,” “Let me get that door for you” were the norm rather than the exception. When stopped by the police on the street, proper etiquette ruled the exchange between the officer and the stopped person. When disciplined at school, the child was questioned at home as a wrongdoer. Those days are long gone.

Today, everyone instantly stops any confrontation or queried position with an aggressive response grounded on claims of legal rights and personal freedoms. No longer is there any consideration that something may be wrong, that they may be at fault for something, or that they may be the wrongdoer. The first response is an aggressive defence. A responsive attack. Questioning the authority or the right of the person who may be just doing their job properly and justly. No matter today. Today, every person is a monarch, beyond anyone else’s authority, as the first person has complete and unquestionable rights.

Lisa Robinson is not the villain here. She is a symptom of our times, a universal critic or questioner of whatever she is served. Questioning her is tantamount to tar and feathering, regardless of whether the question has any justifiable basis. In our society, individuals are above any questioning, above the possibility that they may be at fault, as they are complete authorities unto themselves. They are beyond questioning or examination by anyone.

Such people see themselves as above and beyond anyone’s authority. They are independent, sole rulers unto themselves, beyond the authority or regulation of anyone else. This cannot be repeated enough. These people live in their own world beyond what used to be the social norm. They will take advantage of or twist any law or legal precedent they can to support their position, be it a religious, legal, political or social precedent. They see themselves as the authority in every situation, no matter what. There is no consideration of the situation. They are the authority, FULL STOP.

Our society lives by the above atmosphere, regulations and guidelines. Right or wrong, when questioned, the questioner is questioned. Their rights are questioned, if they have legitimate authority, if they are wrong or if they are right. The first position taken by the assailed today is a presumption of being right with no regard for the possibility that they are wrong. Then they begin deflection that the other person is being oppressive, the other person is wrong, and the authority of the other person is questionable. There is no consideration of the other person possibly being right. The confrontation disintegrates to the level of a fight. It is no longer a question of who is right or wrong, but a battle to outshout, out legalese, out constitutionalize the other.

Take the Councilor Robinson case. No matter whether the positional discrepancies detract from the working efficacy of the job for which she was elected, the efficiency of the work of the entire council is disrupted and thrown into chaos when the contrary person’s opinions trump municipal or civic responsibilities. Robinson is wrong, but by the same token, so is the Mayor. This shouldn’t be a marital squabble or a barroom brawl. They are supposed to be conducting city business. Instead, they erode all discussion to the level of bickering, name-calling and personal insult that belongs nowhere, most certainly not in the council chambers of any city.

Saying “grow up,’ to either squabbler would probably raise their shackles and increase their ire without a step closer to proper discussion, compromise, or even agreed disagreement. None of us is king or queen. We are all equal citizens living in the same society. Isn’t it time we moved back to the past, not only treating each other with respect and mutual dignity but also taking time to hear and consider the other side’s position? Or are we stuck in this quagmire of disrespect and ceaseless dissing from today forward? Socially deaf, permanently?

$AVING$: I often wonder about COSTCO for saving money

Saving money at COSTCO is something that I often but still continue to reject.

If you have a large family, say 4 or more, I think the benefits of shopping at Costco may be very evident. Price comparison with other retailers often has Costco coming out the money saving winner. Price per unit, Costco wins almost everytime.

With a smaller family, a couple or a single person may not be beneficial as you end up buying far more than you can use or need.

TOWN HALL Report: Durham Health explains TICKS, WEST NILE VIRUS and LYME DISEASE

The Town Hall was a presentation by the Durham Region Health Dept about

  • West Nile Virus
  • Ticks
  • Lyme disease.

West Nile Virus
The worst first, the West Nile Virus is not treatable. Symptoms may be managed but there is no vaccine to cure or prevent it at this time.

Symptoms: fever, headache, muscle ache, rash, swollen glands.

Precaution, prevention and protection
The virus is transmitted by infected mosquitos. The best precaution to take is PREVENTION. Minimize skin exposure by wearing long sleeve shirts, long pants, all cuffed.

Wear insect repellent.

Do preventative yard maintenance: mow lawns, trim bushes and shrubs, remove stagnant water sources, ensure door and window screens are without holes. Additionally, yards can be sprayed to reduce or minimize mosquito development.

________________________

Ticks

Ticks are the carriers of Lyme Disease.

Ticks do not jump onto you. They are touched or brushed, and the contact causes them to attach to your exposed skin or clothing.

The blacklegged ticks carry the Lyme disease. Learn how to remove the ticks, disinfect and see your doctor immediately.

_____________________

The hottest months of the year, July, August and September, are the prime season for tick infestation. Again, precautions are proper clothing, insect repellent and visual inspection of skin and hair. A good habit is to take a long and soapy shower after being in potentially infested areas.

PICKERING: A question for the Mayor and Councillors regarding HATE

Mr. Mayor and Councillors,

“What are you doing about HATE and all its vestiges in our community?”

HATE and its related siblings, RACISM, AGEISM, SEXISM, ANTISEMITISM, and SPOUSAL ABUSE seem to be increasing in our society, relentlessly and ceaselessly. Not because any individual or group is at fault, but because the seeds for these things were planted somewhere before and allowed to germinate and grow, and what we may be doing about them is failing.

You may be doing something about these problems, but it isn’t working, as confirmed by what we see on the news and hear daily in the media.

It’s time to address these social problems in some constructive way and then following it up to see if we are succeeding. Councillor Town Halls confirm the existence of the problems  but they aren’t resolving them.

We need constructive, meaningful strategies to deal with these problems.

Let’s start with a municipal committee to develop working strategies to address the HATE problems our society is experiencing: “IMPROVING SOCIETY

Send your comments and opinions for posting to zippyonego@gmail . The Mayor and Councillors are being notified about this initiative.

PICKERING: There’s no justifiable reason for Councilors to accept these gifts

Each of these councillors has received ‘gifts’ of various values from corporations and developers involved with Pickering and the Durham region. Given the salaries they receive, there would seem to be no justifiable reason for their acceptance of any such gifts unless there is some quid pro quo planned. In some eyes, such gifts might be viewed as being on the edge of corruption. In days of old, unquestionably so. But some would voters say, ‘Every politician is on the take to some extent.”

Say it isn’t so, Councillors. Justify these gifts, given that your salary is in the $100K range.

Mayor Ashes ‘take’…oops, take-away.

“If these these gifts are not tied to anything such as contracts why do developers provide these to the mayor. Why would they bother? In the private world this is not tolerated any more.

Could it be the mayor is invited to these events to by pass the Lobbyist Registry? I’m sure when the mayor attends these events there is no discussion on current and future projects and any positioning to get the mayor to support certain requirements. Given the mayor is the only one with Dictator powers, its interesting in 2024 he’s the only one offered these gifts. Its the gifts we do not see that is a concern to me.”

____________________________

I disagree with the above for different reasons. The reasoning rests on the basis that people are corrupt, period. It does not consider the facet of “responsibility” or “job principles.” I believe most politicians are responsible people who take on the job and do it. When they fail to do the job, then take them to task regardless of salary or any ‘gifts’ they accept. Incompetence or job incapability should be accountable.

As for the gifts…the problem may be that the assumption is there are strings attached to the gift. And that is their danger. I like giving gifts that are gifts of appreciation. “Thanks for doing that job so well,” nothing more, nothing less. However, I can understand that the gift may have some strings, like remembering this gift and doing me a favour again in the future. You may get another gift of appreciation. That is the problem with any gift…it may be tainted.

To eliminate any potential problem, forbid all gifts, FULL STOP.

All other government employees are not under any obligation to show us citizens the gifts and freebees they get.

I suspect its even worse there.

And developers don’t give these things out without some sort of payback. I saw this done all the time in the private sector. Not all gifts are disclosed.

Hello all, below  is an email that was sent out June 30, 2024 that shows gifts given to Pickering Mayor Kevin Ashe as posted in the Pickering.ca web site.  You will find that “Borden Ladner Gervais LLP                                    Ticket to Toronto Maple Leafs Game                         $400              May 02, 2024” gifted Kevin Ashe a ticket to the Toronto Maple Leafs game.  Consequently, today the City of Pickering released a statement concerning both the City of Pickering and Ajax regarding Elexicon Holdings.  Apparently  the same law group Borden Ladner Gervais LLP is now retained by the City of Pickering and Ajax.  Coincidence??

POINT – COUNTERPOINT: Is there a conspiracy about Biden’s actual health?

Remember Eva PerÓn, the Argentinian First Lady of the 1940s and 50s? Well, she may have be rechanneled as Julie Biden FLOTUS.

______________________

I have had no intention of joining the multitude of Biden debate crash critics but a media piece caught my eye today and sparked some conspiracy based thinking.

The gist of the article by Jessica Reed Kraus in the ‘House Inhabit’ is that Jill Biden is the force that prevents Joe Biden from resigning from the 2024 US Presidential campaign. Worse, there is a claim in the piece that Biden is suffering from a progressive brain disease called ‘lewy body dementia.’ Some symptoms of the disease are rigid muscles, slow movement, trouble walking and tremors, all of which are visible in Joe Biden.

For the most part, Joe Biden has overcome the stutter issues of his younger days but some vestiges remain, particularly when he is fatigued or highly stressed. He spent a week at Camp David in high-level preparation for the CNN TV debate and most certainly, the debate would have been a high-stress situation.

In any case, Kraus theorizes that Jill Biden does not want to give up the limelight and celebrity status she has as First Lady. Hence, she insists her husband stay in the race for the Presidency so she can continue in her role as the wife of the American President.

All this is gossip-mongering, but unfortunately, there is irrefutable visible evidence to corroborate these claims. Based on the debate broadcast, Biden is definitely experiencing physical difficulties and his debate performance does suggest the man is aged.

I dislike reading such a column as it borders on gossip. However, a little bit of research uncovered many stories from many experts and professionals who have dealt with Biden or do so now. Some of the medical experts have even been named.

It is a sad state of affairs for the US, a nation of more than 300 million people, that they cannot find two better nominees for the Presidential office than a convicted felon who cannot cobble two sentences without one of them being a lie versus an aged man who stumbles, cannot walk unsupported and who displays evidence of questionable mental capacities. An unprecedented and historical election for the US, for certain.

CANADA DAY: Celebrating our legacy and Embracing Our Responsibility

As we come together to celebrate Canada Day, with its joyous events and dazzling fireworks, it’s important to also reflect on the values that define our great nation. Canada is a country built on principles of human rights, inclusivity, and compassion. These are the very values that make us proud to be Canadian, yet recent global events cast a shadow over our celebrations.

In Gaza, a humanitarian crisis unfolds daily. Reports of violence, displacement, and genocide are harrowing. The world watches as fundamental human rights are violated in Palestine, and yet, Canada remains largely silent. Our silence in the face of this ongoing tragedy is troubling, especially for a nation that prides itself on championing human rights and standing up for the oppressed.

Canada’s commitment to human rights should not be limited by borders and mere pious platitudes on the global stage. Our values of inclusivity and compassion demand that we speak out against injustices wherever they occur. The situation in Gaza is not just a distant issue; it’s a human crisis that calls for our attention and action. Our apathy can be interpreted as complicity, undermining the very principles we celebrate today.

As we enjoy the festivities and fireworks right across our country, let’s also remember the responsibilities that come with our freedom and prosperity. Celebrating Canada’s diversity and resilience means extending our compassion beyond our borders and advocating for those whose voices are silenced by oppression.

The real Canada Day celebration would be when Canada stands up for the oppressed and persecuted people, including Palestinians.

Canada Day is a cherished occasion to honour our past and celebrate our vibrant present. It is also a crucial moment to reflect on the future we wish to build. As we come together to mark this day, let us commit to standing up for human rights everywhere. Our nation’s legacy should be one of true compassion and unwavering support for all, without any discrimination of race, religion or culture.

I love this country, and I know you do too. That’s why, while we celebrate our rich history and beautiful landscapes, we must also stand in solidarity with those suffering in Gaza. Our silence is not an option. Let’s use our voices to advocate for peace, justice, and human rights for all.

Proud to be Canadian, today and every day.

BETTER OFF DEAD by  Lee Child

Better off Dead
by  Lee Child, Andrew Child

Synopsis
Reacher never backs down from a problem. And he’s about to find a big one, on a deserted Arizona road, where a Jeep has crashed into the only tree for miles around. Under the merciless desert sun, nothing is as it seems. Minutes later Reacher is heading into the nearby border town, a backwater that has seen better days. Next to him is Michaela Fenton, an army veteran turned FBI agent, who is trying to find her twin brother. He might have got mixed up with some dangerous people. And Reacher might just need to pay them a visit. Their leader has burrowed his influence deep into the town. Just to get in and meet the mysterious Dendoncker, Reacher is going to have to achieve the impossible. To get answers will be even harder. There are people in this hostile, empty place who would rather die than reveal their secrets. But then, if Reacher is coming after you, you might be better off dead.

Richard says
It must be “genre fatigue” that is causing the ennui I am experiencing in reading these kind of books. No matter the writer, Chisholm, Baldacci, Grisham or Child, the writing is the same, book after book. Even the characters, Reacher, Jake Brigance, etc., not much new can be written about them.

Better Off Dead, written in tandem, Child and son, Andrew, doesn’t do it for me. Polished, well-written but tedious reading. Reacher, as big and strong as he is, meets a more challenging opponent in this story and that is about the only thing that sticks out in my memory.

Unless you’re a really dedicated fan of this genre or a bear for punishment, consider alternatives.

CANADA DAY: A proud and long Canadian heritage

I had just graduated from Ryerson P.I. and was working as a Public Health Inspector for the Borough of Scarborough in 1974. To supplement my salary, I would bartender at Maple Creek banquet hall, located off of Lawrence Ave.E. directly behind 43 police station, and down in the Highland Creek valley, and drive a private taxi for Atlantic Taxi. In that capacity, I would meet people from every walk of life and every corner of the world. Inevidently, I would be asked if I grew up in Toronto or my nationality, and this was my chance to state my Canadian status.

My mother was an Acadian-French, born in New Brunswick. A family of 12 children. One of my cousins started a family tree and had to visit archives in Quebec City since the churches kept birth and census records before Canada was created as a country. The lineage went back to 1641 when settlers were given a plot of land and told to survive on it or die. I had great-grandparents who lived to 100 back in 1800. My grandparents lived to their late 90’s, and my mother was 98.5.  My father’s parents arrived from Ireland in 1850 during the Potato Famine. A small family of 5 children. We are proud  CANADIANS. My father and grandfather, 2 great cousins, and 1 great uncle served in the great war, WW1.

HEALTH: The Longevity Menu: 9 Foods for a Long Life

The Longevity Menu: 9 Foods for a Long Life
LISA BENDALL

Superfoods

Dark green leafy vegetables protect your bones and eyesight, and are full of cancer-fighting compounds. Photo: Westend/Getty Images

These fave foods are proven to fight disease, promote cardiovascular health – and potentially add years to your life. Of course, it’s important to have variety and balance, but certain choices are meant to be on the menu more often. Here, nine foods to help you live longer and better.

1. Olive Oil
Several studies have linked this versatile oil — the cornerstone of the oft-touted Mediterranean diet — to longevity. Olive oil is high in monounsaturated fats and is known to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. It may also offer some protection from Alzheimer’s disease. Gimme some skin If you’re going to live long, might as well have great skin! Olive oil can be applied as a moisturizer. Choose good-quality extra-virgin oil and use it sparingly.

2. Berries
All fruits are good for us. But intensely coloured berries in particular have a lot going for them: they are high in flavoids, known antioxidants. The anthocyanin pigments that provide their intense colour have a number of disease-protective properties. And you can eat their skins, in which healthy compounds are more concentrated, Berries have been shown to reduce high blood pressure and the risk of heart attack. Tip: Go outside the berry box and explore exotic berries like goji and acai.

3. Salmon
Eating salmon appears to reduce heart failure, as long as it’s served healthfully – baked, not fried. Salmon is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, an essential nutrient that we can only get from diet. It’s key in lowering inflammation in the body. Other top finned friends: mackerel and bluefish. You can take a fish out of water, but you can’t take the oil out of the fish Research has shown that fish oil supplements don’t provide the same protection against heart failure as eating actual fish.

4. Whole Grain Fibre
In a study that tracked more than 300,000 men and women over the age of 50, those who had the highest amount of fibre in their diets, especially from whole grains, were the least likely to die over the years that followed. (The same study revealed that they kept their looks longer, too!) Whole grains are known to help the heart, fight cancer and help ward off diabetes. You don’t need a whole lot Try a variety of whole grains like oatmeal, millet, brown rice, teff and amaranth.

5. Dark Chocolate
Does it still count as a superfood if it tastes like a supertreat? The cacao tree originally grew in Central and South America, and its beans were used as money. Research has linked consumption of cocoa to liver and cardiovascular health and mental fitness. Heart of darkness Take it dark (at least 65 per cent cocoa) if you want all the benefits. Milk chocolate and white chocolate don’t contain as many flavonols (antioxidants), plus they may be high in fat and sugar.

6. Nuts
Nuts such as walnuts, almonds and pecans are known to improve your cholesterol levels and may help to protect against blood clots and heart attack. Research shows they can also control your blood sugar, curb your appetite and help you manage your weight. In a study of more than 100,000 men and women, the results showed that those who regularly ate nuts lived longer and healthier lives. Go natural. It’s a whole lot healthier to eat nuts without those sugary or salty coatings.

7. Greens
Yesterday it was spinach, today it’s kale, but it’s all good. Dark green leafy vegetables (other top choices are collards and turnip greens) are high in vitamins, magnesium, calcium and cancer-fighting compounds. They protect your bones and eyesight, and may contribute to a high-quality old age. What a bargain.  Greens are high in fibre but low in calories, so they make you full without making you fat.

8. Legumes
Studies show that a diet high in legumes (beans, lentils and chickpeas) appears to prevent coronary heart disease and improve blood sugar. An Australian study of seniors in four countries found they all had something in common: those who ate the most legumes were most likely to be alive seven years later. Are they nuts? Well, no. Peanuts are actually legumes. But in a 2013 study showing that people who eat nuts daily live longer, the peanut was one of the “nuts” studied. Another legume for longevity!

9. Yogurt
We like yogurt because it gives us all the vitamin, mineral and calcium benefits of a dairy product. But it also contains Lactobacillus acidophilus, a friendly bacteria that can wipe out disease-causing micro-organisms in our bodies. Yogurt is used to treat everything from high cholesterol to Type 2 diabetes to intestinal disorders. Eating yogurt appears to strengthen the immune system.

For the most health potential, pick low-fat plain yogurt with five grams of protein or more per serving.

BONE IN THE THROAT, Anthony Bourdain

The acclaimed first novel by the New York Times bestselling author of Kitchen Confidential and host of Parts Unknown on CNN. A wildly funny, irreverent tale of murder, mayhem, and the mob.

Synopsis
When up-and-coming chef Tommy Pagana settles for a less than glamorous stint at his uncle’s restaurant in Manhattan’s Little Italy, he unwittingly finds himself a partner in big-time crime. And when the mob decides to use the kitchen for a murder, nothing Tommy learned in cooking school has prepared him for what happens next.

With the FBI on one side, and his eccentric wise-guy superiors on the other, Tommy has to struggle to do right by his conscience, and to avoid getting killed in the meantime.

In the vein of Prizzi’s Honor, Bone in the Throat is a thrilling Mafia caper laced with entertaining characters and wry humour. This first novel is a must-have for fans of Anthony Bourdain’s nonfiction.

Richard says
Bone in the Throat is exactly as the synopsis describes, a mob story. Bourdain must have had a penchant for the mob or seen enough of them in his kitchen career that he had near, if not outright first hand experience with mafia types.

It’s a grisly story at times, suspenseful and tension-filled but reading it bordered on boredom with page after page of gruesome mob activity. I saw no point to the story other than to portray the mob as sadistic killers.

SCRIVENER: The ultimate tool for writers, priceym $60 Cdn, but worth it.

Scrivener is a digital writing tool. It makes MS Word or standard word processing programs look like a quill compared to a ball point pen. Archaic and awkward.

AUTO: Take as many precautions as you can to protect your vehicle

car theftPREVENTIVE MEASURES AND TIPS FOR CONSUMERS

Consumers can make simple adjustments to safeguard their vehicles. CAA Insurance recommends the following preventive measures for consumers:

AUTO THEFT
Hide your keys rather than hang them by the garage entrance door.
Park your car inside the garage rather than in the driveway.

AUTO SECURITY and SAFETY
Glance into the back of your car before getting in to confirm it is empty.
Warm your car up by driving in it, not letting it run independently.
Lock your care whenever you park it, even in the driveway.

  • Secure your parked vehicle with a steering-wheel lock, brake pedal lock, or wheel lock, such as “The Club” to secure your parked vehicle.
  • Secure your car key fob by storing it in a Faraday box or pouch to prevent signal hacking.
  • Consider a professionally installed after-market immobilizer.
  • Lock your doors (both car and home) and park your vehicle inside if you have a garage.
  • Enable or install multi-factor authentication capabilities in your vehicle.
  • If you own more than one vehicle, it’s recommended to park the less valuable one nearer to the street.
  • Install motion sensors and a camera on your driveway to capture any activity.
  • Cover the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) so it’s not visible on the dashboard.
  • Store a GPS tracker to track your vehicle should it be stolen.
  • Ensure items are out of sight, and do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
  • Always avoid leaving your vehicle unattended while it is running.
  • Report any suspicious activity to police and avoid confrontations with thieves.

EDITORIAL: Government failing the citizenry needing the most help

Sheeple?

It’s incredible how we accept and tolerate incompetent government at every level from dysfunctional municipal councils to indecisively dysfunctional provincial governments to questionably competent federal politicians gorging themselves as the public trough.

What are these elected officials doing?

Immigration is a seriously negative impact on every region of the nation. We are unable to provide these people with the necessities of life: shelter and food. So they turn to tents and canvas encampments and food banks or charity handouts. Our own citizenry fends as poorly with insufficient income, need for shelter, and anxiety as to the source of their next meal. Government officials were elected to solve these problems. They are failing on every count. Homeless numbers are on the rise; use of food banks is increasing; mentally challenged need professional assistance. And where are our politicians? Squabbling and bickering at Council meetings, offering us alcohol at confectionary stores, offering to sell lottery tickets at beer stores!  These are solutions? Heaven help us if these politicians see these initiatives as solutions to the growing number of problems we are facing.

Cut them some slack? Why? The problems are getting worse. They’re the governing leaders. Their job is to tackle and resolve the problems. Ask yourself, “Is life getting better in you city? Your province? Your country?” If it isn’t, who is at fault? Where is the problem really? We pay our taxes without fail. We pay for our food purchases. We work daily, if we have a job. And in return, we get governing officials who bicker with one another, government leaders who offer platitudes like “let them eat cake (drink beer)…) and others who worry about their alarming descent in the polls prior to another election.

Something is amiss here but so what !

POINT-COUNTERPOINT: “I pay exorbitant property taxes for this questionably dysfunctioning City Council?”

I watched the recent Council meeting of June 10 and the longer I watched the more uncomfortable I became. These are adults? These are professionals in their business professions? These are elected politicians?

I voted for some of these characters. If there were a plebiscite to remove them, I would not hesitate for one second. [ Thank goodness there is no such means to remove incalcitrant, non-functioning council members in this way as some of these Councillors would be gone in the flash of a ballot. ]

Is each of these Council members aware of the meaning of respect? Do they know human dignity and acknowledgement of same? There are anger issues here and attending an anger management workshop would benefit a number of these politicians.

I cannot stop paying my taxes which seem to be becoming exorbitant but if I could, I would stop paying them, not because they seem to be growing incredibly without  acceptable justification or logical rationale. I would stop paying them so these boobs serving as our Councillors would not receive salaries for what they do.

Boobs, incredible non-functioning boobs who let anger cloud their actions, let their emotions control their decisions. Boobs too, for sitting back without comment or criticism of what is occurring. Maybe I am one of the ignorant masses but I have the vote and I will put it to good use as soon as I can. I want this batch of bungling, fumbling fools removed. These kinds of politicians do not deserve to hold office.

Shame on the bunch of these bungling incompetents.

BOOKS: New release by Rick Pyves

After 5 years of researching, editing and writing I have just published my 5th book – On With The Show. This story provides insights into the great depression in Canada from 1929 – 1939 as backdrop to my maternal grandfather Bert Eason’s efforts to raise money for the unemployed and needy. He performed in over 250 shows/concerts in Montreal. Bert was a singer, pianist, comedian and master of ceremonies. Bert, along with his fellow artists gave their all, as the federal, provincial and municipal governments were tragically overwhelmed with an economic tsunami both in Canada and globally. The book is available on Amazon as both an eBook and Trade Book at https://www.amazon.ca/Show-Singer-Comedian-During-Depression/dp/1777992583/

Vive les dames !

Claudia Sheinbaum, known as “la Doctora” for her academic achievements, has made history by becoming the first woman and the first Jewish person elected as President of Mexico. She won approximately 60% of the vote in the largest election in Mexico’s history, succeeding President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, her longtime ally. Sheinbaum, a physicist with a doctorate in energy engineering, has a notable background, including being part of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning United Nations climate panel.

Born in Mexico City in 1962 to Holocaust survivor grandparents, Sheinbaum has a long history of public service and academic excellence. She studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the University of California, Berkeley, before entering politics in 2000 as Mexico City’s environment secretary. She later served as the head of the Tlalpan district and then as the mayor of Mexico City.

Sheinbaum faces significant challenges, including addressing Mexico’s high homicide and femicide rates and organized crime. Her approach is expected to differ from Obrador’s, focusing more on data-driven decisions. The transition in leadership also comes at a critical time for US-Mexico relations, particularly concerning immigration and border security.

Sheinbaum’s election marks a significant cultural shift in Mexico, a predominantly Catholic country with a patriarchal society. Her administration will need to balance continuity with Obrador’s policies and introduce her own initiatives to address the country’s pressing issues.

FBNA: A great association of caring residents

The FBN Ratepayers Association is a neighbourhood group that’s a model for other neighbourhoods in the City of Pickering:

  • they volunteer
  • they donate time, energy and effort
  • they give to the City’s needy
  • they give help where help is needed

This list could go on and on. It’s a neighbourhood populated by people who care about their City and work to make it a better place.

Individuals within the association should be highlighted but are not, as most of them are so modest they would feel awkward under such a spotlight.

FBNA BBQ Breakfast
Be that as it may, the FBNA recently held a breakfast BBQ to help raise money for the City’s animal services, DARS, the St. Paul Food Bank. They raised nearly $1,000 on a rainy, lousy weather, spring morning. Kudos to them!

Fairport Beach Neighbourhood Association is just one of the many great neighbourhoods that make the City of Pickering a great place to live. Thanks FBNA!

_______

[The FBNA had nothing to do with this posting. Most likely many of their members would feel awkward about it. This should not be so. This is a neighbourhood group of people who are supportive of their City and do things to help it stay vibrant and dynamic. This piece is written to give other City neighbourhoods ideas, not to tout and promote FBNA. There are other city neighbourhoods with residents who also work to make Pickering a better city.]
