David BOWIE, On aging

“If you are pining for youth I think it produces a stereotypical old man because you only live in memory, you live in a place that doesn’t exist. I think aging extraordinary process whereby you become the person you always should have been.”

Old age certainly can be merciless—the decline of both body and mind, the awareness of an ever-shortening time until death and the loss of friends and loved ones are among the most sobering things we must deal with as human beings.

Old age can also be merciful—the additional time to do what you want to do, the clearer recognition of things that matter most, and the freedom to express what you really think without worrying about other opinions are some of the best outcroppings of aging.

Old age need not be dreaded or dreadful. In my mind, it definitely beats the alternative of dying young.

David Bowie, the famous musician died at 69 years old.

EDITORIAL: A message the Pickering Council should heed

Do you think Pickering Council might get the message and consider something like this?

This article was written by Steven Levy and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary.

My confession:
I don’t like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don’t think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from, that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can’t find it in the Constitution and I don’t like it being shoved down my throat…

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren’t allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I guess that’s a sign that I’m getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it’s not funny, it’s intended to get you thinking.

In light of recent events… terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O’Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn’t want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school… The Bible says thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.

Then Dr. Steven Benjamin Spock said we shouldn’t spank our children when they misbehave, because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock’s son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he’s talking about.. And we said okay.

Now we’re asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don’t know right from wrong, and why it doesn’t bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with ‘WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.’

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world’s going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send ‘jokes’ through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

Are you laughing yet?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you’re not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it.
Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.

Pass it on if you think it has merit.

If not, then just discard it… no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don’t sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.

This eloquent message is what we have been promoting for a long time, just not loudly or as openly as we should have. If CBS can proselytize this message, we see no reason why we cannot follow suit.

Are you still a safe driver? Staying safe behind the wheel

Driving is a complex task that involves many different skills and body functions. We need to integrate our visual, cognitive, physical, and perceptual skills to drive safely. For many older adults, a vehicle is a way to get around and a sign of their independence, enabling them to maintain their social and community activities. This is an essential factor in maintaining their quality of life. As we age, health and medical conditions changes can affect driving ability, compromising safety on the road. Continue reading

CLASS ACT
Stuart Woods

Synopsis
Stone Barrington takes down old and new enemies in the latest thriller from perennial fan favourite Stuart Woods.

After a rocky jaunt in Maine, Stone Barrington is settling back in New York City when an old client reaches out for help with a delicate matter. A feud they thought was put to rest long ago has reemerged with a vengeance and reputations—and money—are now on the line.

As Stone sets out to unravel a tangled web of crime and secrets, his mission becomes even more complicated when he makes an irresistible new acquaintance. In both the underbelly and upper echelons of New York, everyone has something to hide—and if Stone has learned anything, it’s that history has a way of repeating itself.

Richard comments
Stuart Wood is amazing for his capacity to turn out adult comic books not only at an incredible pace but at a consistent level of readability.

Class Act is a good example of an amazingly capable writer producing a very readable book quickly and efficiently. The number of books he has written is amazing. Woods seems to be able to churn these things out faster than the farmer in the dell produced butter. Even more amazing is that each book is engaging and entertaining. The plots are simple, straightforward. The themes are solid suspense, page after page. This writer has it down to a science.

What a mind
He is a prose genius who seems to be able to compose and complete a novel in a few days. I imagine him just sitting down at his keyboard at 8 am and whacking away, word after word, at will. Break for lunch, finish the chapter by 4 pm and that’s it. Day after day, Monday to Friday, as if it is an office routine. Perhaps his mind whirs constantly playing with the plot, the story development, and the characters but the next office day, and he’s at it whipping off another chapter.

And what is even more amazing is that each book entertains endlessly, page after page, chapter after chapter. It reads like fun and you sense he is having fun in writing it.

Readers will find every one of his Stone Barrington books tremendously enjoyable, wonderful reading in the sense that every reader just wants to read the next page, and the next, and the next. The pleasure never stops until the end where you know you have had a tasty treat satisfying your reading appetite but without stuffing you with high-calorie, heavy-ladened barbs of prose. A light meal that was enjoyable. Full stop.

Guess the age of the author of this article?

Nobody wants to write this article.

And nobody wants to read it.

Nobody wants to have to think about it.

And nobody wants to be reminded.

But living in the real world means reckoning even with things we would rather ignore. Just because we are weary doesn’t mean we can wish away unpleasantness. Just because it’s been going on for a long time doesn’t mean it’s over.

The sad reality is that COVID is still with us. It’s still evolving. And it almost assuredly has more surprises in store. Public health officials are once again raising alarm around a potent new variant that is spreading quickly through the Northeast. Hospitalization rates are rising. We’ve seen this before. Where will it end up? All we can do — and by we, we also mean public health professionals — is make guesses, educated or otherwise.

In a comprehensive opinion piece in The Washington Post titled, “The coronavirus is speaking. It’s saying it’s not done with us,” a scientist and longtime sane voice on COVID, Eric Topel, surveys the battleground. He notes many reasons why today is a far cry from the early days of the pandemic. But then he summarizes with a sentence that reads like a wake-up call: “We’re all tired, but we’re up against a force that isn’t.”

COVID doesn’t care about us. It’s on its own evolutionary trajectory. The only question is whether we help it thrive or find ways to diminish its impact.

Of all the lessons we didn’t learn from the pandemic, perhaps the greatest is humility. Science has brought tremendous benefits to human health. But the reality is, as any honest scientist or doctor will tell you, there is far more that we don’t understand about nature than we do. There are undoubtedly even more unknown unknowns — the stuff we don’t even know we don’t know.

We can hope for the best with COVID. We can lean on the fact that this is no longer a totally novel disease. Many (but unfortunately not all) of the people we meet have been vaccinated. Others may have some immunity from having been previously infected. That counts for something. As Topel writes, “Americans can take some comfort in the combined immunity from the country’s massive numbers of infections, reinfections, vaccinations and boosters. That should blunt the effect of (the new variant).”

But there are also many reasons for caution, if not outright concern. Topel continues, “The virus is talking to us, and it is telling us it has many more ways to evolve. It is revealing that it not only can fake out or elude our immune response but can also get better at penetrating our cells. What will happen next? Will we see a whole new family of variants arise that are distinct from the omicron family? It is entirely possible.”

It is a tragedy of historic proportions that COVID was politicized by the former president and his allies and enablers. This not only led to unnecessary deaths and disabilities but created an environment in which the necessities of public health more broadly and vaccines in particular have been undermined.

Now we are at a point where fatigue crosses all segments of society, and understandably so. It’s hard to stay vigilant when so much of what makes life special and joyful has been jeopardized by this threat. Meanwhile, vaccines have been wonderful in saving lives. So too have treatments. These factors have lulled us into complacency. Complacency is a common human trait. But we are in an arms race with a wily pathogen, and Topol lists many ways we are unilaterally disarming.

Meanwhile, in addition to COVID, we have become more susceptible to current and future attacks on our public health from other potential diseases. Our social safety net is frayed. The National Centers for Disease Control has lost credibility from early missteps and poor ongoing communication. Medical professionals are burnt out. Researchers are eager to get back to other lines of inquiry. All of us wish none of this had happened. But it did. And it’s still happening. And it might happen in ways in the future that could be worse than what we’re seeing now.

Instead of a mature approach to a legitimate threat to the health, security, and welfare of the United States (and the world), we are looking at Republican witch hunts targeting Dr. Anthony Fauci and growing antagonism to even the most basic public health measures.

There is not sustained leadership on this issue on either side of the political aisle. There is apparently no political benefit for such, as Americans crave normalcy, and many are willing to ignore the grave reality and look the other way.

Nobody is arguing that we should return to the draconian measures of the pandemic’s disorienting early days. We should constantly reassess risk and adapt accordingly. The more we know about the virus and the damage it causes, the more we can consider, with nuance, what should be done.

Ignorance, in this case, isn’t bliss. Nature doesn’t care what we think. We would do well to remind ourselves of that lesson. It can help us with COVID and with other challenges that no doubt lie beyond the horizons of our knowledge and experience.

Finally, if you aren’t up to date on your vaccines and booster shots, please schedule them.

COVID, in its many variations, still stalks and strikes. It hasn’t quit. We can’t afford to quit defending against it.

Remember!

Jan 9 – Rotzy pours cold water over a lot things this week!

Rotzy grumbles a lot this week: water fountains, NFL coaches, jurisprudent shortsightedness and more.

W.E.H.T….
‘What Ever Happened To’ ‘Water Fountains’? No, not the ones like ‘The Princess Margaret Fountain’ beside the CNE grandstand, I mean DRINKING fountains. They used to be all over the place in Brant’s Ford! Indoors, outdoors, everywhere!! Some had ‘on-off’ handles, some were operated with a ‘push-button’ and many ran constantly. Good, healthy Grand River water…because they started adding flouride to it in 1945….Rotzy’s birth year….which did nothing to improve the taste, but it didn’t matter because we had ‘the healthiest teeth in Canada! Still, one of my favourite things about visiting my Grandpa Lovett at Kew Beach in Toronto The Good in the early 1950’s was T.O.’s drinking water!….of course they had drinking fountains too, even more than Brant’s Ford….but their water came out of Lake Ontario and it was COLD compared to The Grand. But in the Telephone City it was The Grand, just like all the other cities, burgs and hamlets as it made its’ way to Lake Erie. So….SO….I’m thinking, can I pick a ‘Favourite Fountain’ and a ‘Least Favourite? Piece of cake for the former….the fountain on Colborne St in Alexander Park! It was half a block from 59 Peel St, we played tag, hide ‘n seek, football and even some baseball there (in spite of the abundance of hundred-year-olde maples and oaks), sat on the giant cast iron ship’s cannon and fired 4″ ‘cannon crackers’ at the ‘enemy’ on Victoria Day….the blasts barely cleared the fountain, which operated 24/7, and the large cast iron horses’ watering trough, which was surely an attraction during the daytyme as all the delivery wagons….ice, bread, milk, etc….watered their animals there with the drivers helping themselves to the fountain. Well, choosing the Least Favourite Fountain is just as easy, tho the actual fountain itself isn’t really the issue….the LOCATION was the problem! The Btfd PUC Bus Terminal on the south-west corner of Market Square….the fountain ran 24/7 in the downstairs public washroom, and the smell of pee and poop down there was just overwhelming!….24/7! One would ‘really have to go’ if one chose to enter the facility….and one departed ASAP. Hence, that fountain did not appeal to the thirsty. Good riddance to that one and Rotzy’s betting all the rest are long gone too….and I WILL check Alexander Park and have a sip if the fountain’s still there? Just thinking that the ‘current’ and ‘just past’ generations probably have NEVER drunk water from a fountain….it’s always in a plastic bottle. A while back in Zehr’s there was a large display rack of bottles of ‘SMART WATER’….like, this product will make you SMART, or smarter than you already are….a bluish tinge to the otherwise clear plastic bottle. I said (to myself, tho I was LOL’ing) “Ho-Lee cow, Toad (or something like that), people are paying $3 bucks for a bottle of water.” As I pointed my cart toward the check-outs there stood a young father (he looked about 12 or 13 and had half a cartful of Huggies*tm) checking out the SMART WATER*tm pyramid display and Rotzy immediately ‘pounced’. “Hey guy, do you think that drinking Smart Water is really gonna make you and your family smarter? At three dollars a bottle”? “Sorry”?? he said. “If you use Brant’s Ford TAP WATER….which is free/gratis….almost….You and your Wife and Son (I ‘guessed’ at ‘Son’ because I saw a baby boy on the Huggies*tm box) will have healthier teeth….and in spite of the fact that your tap water tastes similar to Buckleys cough syrup, the money you’ve saved will have you all smiling and flashing your ‘pearly-whites’ ”!! “OK, OK, Sir! I’ll put my three bottles back. I didn’t know about the….. …..’pearls’??….and thanks, Sir”! “Good on you, Son…. you’re smart’.

We Had Some Good Responses….
….on “F/N”s article(s) last week on the cop killing as well as Cdn law and order in general, which is ‘broken down’ these days tho it well might be just plain ‘broken’. Check this one out….from Zoomer News last Wed ayem. Ottawa. A 20-yr old white male arrested following a TWO year investigation involving several police forces with regard to the safety of Fed Gov’t Buildings and one or more embassies which apparently have been targeted as potential trouble areas. Once again….a TWO YEAR investigation!….OK? The case was remanded for 2 or 3 weeks, methinks. OK? Now the ‘suspect’ is currently out and about, because ‘Bond was NOT required’. OK? NO IT’S NOT OK!! Rotzy’s sorry, but I didn’t get to record Hizzhonour’s statement as to why ‘NO BOND IS NEEDED for this suspect in THIS TYPE of case’….altho the wording the judge used was similar to being ‘released on his own recognizance’….VERY similar in fact. But hang on a second or two….this isn’t some guy getting caught stealing hub caps! Like, WTF goes??!! Unless the police have ‘really mucked up’/got the ‘wrong guy’, he’ll ‘pull a Harry Houdini’ and just disappear? Whatever. It says here he should have been ‘detained/held’. Still.

It Was A Busy Week….
for Miz Jo’s ‘Wellness Recovery Program’….over to Life Lab’s excellent facility in Paris for bloodwork Monday. DOH! Closed….so we went back Wed aft. Appt. Fri ayem with the Nurse Practitioner at Dr Ivan’s…..her somewhat elevated B/P was ‘due to WCS’ (white coat syndrome*see below) but she moved the Toledos up to 88 lbs!….four closer to the 100-mark than the last weigh-in! One anti-biotic down and one to go….less than a week at this point….and she also got some new meds for after the A/B’s. Thurs aft she had a second visit with Raj the physio therapist, who gave her a ‘thumbs-up’ one week after her initial assessment….so the exercise program is definitely helping. Friday was the monthly visit/checkup with Warren The EMS Guy (for both of us) and Miz’ Jo’s ‘elevated B-P’ (*see above) was getting back to norm. Rotzy’s vitals (oxygen, lungs, B/P) were fine….see ya next month Warren.

Stuff
I wonder if the “F/N” readership was as happy as Rotzy to hear the first of the EIGHT young Toronto The Good murderesses (13-18 & charged with Murder 2) was released on Bail early last week….*already noted in this space….and by the tyme you’re reading this, MOST, if not ALL of them will be out of gaol! Lovely!! **Heads up to T.O. Winos….don’t be waving your Zing or Mazel Tov around at night….or at all….those bad-ass girls/children are out….and we all know what happened last tyme.

#1 & #2 rules for football coaches…at any level. *Don’t ‘run up the score’ vs your opponent **don’t go outta your way to make the other coach or his team look bad. It WILL come back one day and BITE YOUR ASS!! You hear me, Andy Reid?! Rotzy always saw you as a VERY good coach. But, how can that be so now..,..after you captured the ‘Not-All-That Impressive “F/N” D.O.T.W. Award. The FIRST Dink Of The Week recipient of 2023, and probably the FIRST EVER in the ‘Sports’ category! Andy, Andy, Andy! WTF were you thinking? Was it a ‘dare’ or a ‘bet’? Your AFC-leading K/C Chiefs are clobbering the sad sack Oakland/Los Angeles/Oakland again/ now Las Vegas Raiders on the field and the scoreboard. Late in the 4th qtr and your Chiefs have the ball nearing the Raiders’ goal line (like all afternoon). The play is called, they break the huddle and line up in a formation (from National Lampoon?), run the play (from The Twilight Zone?)…..and somehow it’s a TD!!? Mercifully it’s called back for Holding by a Chief’s lineman. Not funny anymore. Tough s–t, Andy….but in all my 20-some years playing/coaching football, Rotzy has never seen anything like it! Only thing ‘close’ was the olde movie, ‘Knute Rockne All American’. The film’s ‘action’ segments depicting The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame were so poorly done (it was made circa 1940) it was funny….almost. Andy Reid’s Chiefs weren’t funny either but the way K/C broke huddle and went into their formation was ‘sort of’ like Knute’s. Anyway, by the tyme you’re reading this there will have been apologies and perhaps a fine from the NFL. Whatever. Next tyme you play the Raiders, Andy….best keep your head up and watch your back.

*Thought Of The Day…Like the fly said as he walked across the mirror….”well now, that’s another way of looking at it”.

COLD TUSCAN STONE, David P. Wagner

Cold Tuscan Stone, David P. Wagner

Synopsis
Rick Montoya has moved from New Mexico to Rome, embracing the life of a translator. He’s settling into la dolce vita when a school friend who is now a senior in the Italian Art Squad recruits Rick for an unofficial undercover role. Armed with a list of galleries, suspects, and an expense account, Rick would arrive in Tuscany posing as a buyer for a Santa Fe gallery and flush out burial urn traffickers.

But before sunset on Rick’s first day in Volterra, a gallery employee dies in a brutal fall from a high cliff.

The local Commissario and his team consider Rick an amateur, and worse, a foreigner. And now they suspect him in the dead man’s murder. While the Volterra squad pursues its leads, Rick continues to interview his list: a museum director, a top gallery owner, a low-profile import/export businessman and his enterprising colour-coordinated assistant, and a sensuous heiress with a private art specialty and clientele.

When Rick’s girlfriend Erica arrives from Rome to visit him, she rekindles a friendship with an alluring, maybe dangerous, acquaintance. Has Rick’s role made him the target of both cops and criminals?

Richard comments
David Wagner lived in Italy for nearly ten years which formed a solid basis for writing about Italy. He worked in the foreign service which likely made him very observant about the country’s culture and social patterns. As importantly, his appreciation of fine foods, fine dining and quality wines indulging in all of them with great enthusiasm. Being an English scholar meant he was always very conscientious about his writing and note keeping that proved to be of great benefit to his writing career. He published his first book, Cold Tuscan Stone, in 2013 launching his writing career. Five more have followed, all starring his leading character, Rick Montoya, an American who has lived, studied and worked in Italy for so long, he is often mistaken for being a native.

Cold Tuscan Stone is set in Volterra, a medieval town located southwest of Florence. Our protagonist, Rick Montoya is a self-employed translator but his high school buddy, a high official in the cultural ministry in Rome asks him to undertake a project to uncover art thefts. There’s suspense, tension, murder and skulduggery throughout, all interspersed with bits of Italian dialogue and lots of descriptions about the Tuscan foods, the wines of the region and the social mannerisms of Italians.

Wagner is emulating another American writer who is renowned for her Commissario Brunetti mystery stories, a Venetian police inspector. Though many obvious comparisons may be made between the two writers, Leon has a lengthier pedigree, 30 years versus Wagner’s 10. Both authors incorporate current social issues and national problems facing Italy currently. Montoya though is more of a foreigner than Brunetti, so his observations about Italians, their culture and their society are more myopic than Brunetti, a native Venetian. Both characters talk about food and wine throughout their stories.

Wagner writes a good story, engaging and entertaining. Cold Tuscan Stone is a nice mystery thriller with a very nice blend of culture, history, and mystery tension and suspense. Because Wagner’s writing is polished and refined, the story is enjoyable throughout the entire read. Wagner closes his book with a chapter about wine and another with comments about Italy and the background of Volterra.

Wagner’s book is a good read though I prefer Leon’s pacing and storytelling more.

Research confirmed strategies to make you smarter

  1. Get your sleep
Researchers at UC Berkely report that “Two-thirds of adults throughout all developed nations fail to obtain the recommended eight hours of nightly sleep.” More research has shown that missing an hour of sleep turns a sixth grader’s brain into that of a fourth grader. There’s actually a clear correlation between sleep and grades: “Teens who received A’s averaged about fifteen more minutes sleep than the B students, who in turn averaged fifteen more minutes than the C’s, and so on.”
In short, get your proper sleep.

  2. Get your exercise
Your brain is part of your body and what’s good for the body is good for the brain.

“Scientifically, on the current evidence, exercise is the best way to enhance your cognitive function.” When you exercise it boosts BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) which helps you to learn better and faster.

  3. Stay calm
Even if you have a high IQ, if you’re caught in a Pigpen cloud of emotion, you’re going to make bad decisions. Staying calm is the séance that precedes the exorcism. Scientists refer to it as “arousal control.” How do we chill? When you start to get stressed, relax yourself with deep breaths. Whenever you know you have something challenging coming up, take the time to prepare. A feeling of control reduces stress and keeps our thinking clear. Sounds simple but it’s powerful.

  4. Focus
The internet is half enlightenment engine, half dehydrated concentrate of stupidity. Spend too much time on social media (the epicenter of modern tantrum culture) and you will end up theatrically troubled. It feels like your brain is having trash shoveled into it. What else has such a capacity to make us both simultaneously exhausted and overstimulated?

Shifting between tasks is not seamless for your brain. Your focus and attention take a hit every time you switch. Constantly bouncing around between tasks produces the equivalent of a 10-point IQ drop.

So when you want to be at your best, silence your phone and distance yourself from all those attention burglars. “Batch” all email checking, texting, and social media into pre-designated times. Then turn off notifications. This allows your brain to hum at full capacity and increases the secretion of elbow grease to get good work done.

  5. Ask for HELP
Your education isn’t complete until you’ve learned to take a hint. When you’re unsure, get help.

Find a mentor. But does needing someone to guide you mean you’re not a genius? Quite likely the opposite…

Ask for advice. Become the chimeric blend of the smartest people around you.

The research shows there are two kinds of intelligence: fluid and crystallized. Fluid intelligence is raw processing power. Figuring things out with no knowledge. Crystallized intelligence is closer to expertise, based more on prior learning and information.

Fluid intelligence declines rapidly as we get older. In fact, it begins dropping at around age 25. Yeesh. But crystallized intelligence doesn’t even peak until age 60. It’s well known that top mathematicians and physicists do their best work in the first half of life. Meanwhile, great authors usually create their masterworks in the second half.

6 Simple Ways to Lose Belly Fat

Losing abdominal fat, or belly fat is a common weight loss goal.

Fat has various functions in your body, including energy storage and hormone regulation. Having some body fat is normal.

There are two main types of fat in the abdomen. Subcutanous fat is the type that’s located just below your skin. This fat is stored all over your body, including the midsection.

The other type of fat in your abdominal area is called visceral fat. This fat is located deeper in your body, where it cushions the organs in your abdomen. Research has linked high amounts of this fat with conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Continue reading

EDITORIAL: Residents of Pickering deserve better.

Again, councillors at city hall in the City of Pickering disappoint. City residents deserve better updating and communication.

City of Pickering residents deserve better communication, updating, and information from its city hall. What is happening at the council meetings? What is the latest council news pertaining to any ward? What is each councillor doing?

Once, not long ago, councillors had website pages where residents could learn recent news or updates from councillors. No longer. Searching for councillor websites on the City of Pickering pages is an exercise in frustration and futility. Some councillors still have websites. Finding the Internet address to these sites should not be a serious challenge.

The campaign halo worn by the councillors during the election campaign seems to be slipping more and more as weeks pass.

Two councillors promised town halls and explanatory summations. Whoosh….words in the wind. Others promised updating and constituent messaging. Whoosh! Most promised better communication, updating and information to constituents. Whoosh!

Seems like we can sail ships with the hot air that was whooshing from the candidates during the campaign. Today, we’d be stock still in the water.

No explanations, no justifications, no rationalizations, no excuses….simply, no communication.

Many would believe that the residents of Pickering deserve better.

HEALTHY AGING ATTITUDES: slow down aging with these attitude changes

igorMany of our clients are in their 50s-70s. They may not be “young” in the classic sense of the word, but some of them certainly are youthful.

After thinking about our clients who are over 50, yet talk, act and behave like people decades younger, I noticed a few common things about their attitude. There are healthy and unhealthy attitudes in regard to aging.

Let’s delve deep into those attitudes.

Healthy Aging Attitude #1: Looking for Evidence that You Are Getting Better

Your brain has a part in it called the “reticular activating system.” It looks for proof and similarities. For example, when you buy a car that you think is unique, after you buy it, you start to see a lot of other cars just like it.

Same thing with aging. If you start looking for evidence that you’re getting old, you’ll find it. And then, once you find one piece of evidence, you’ll find more and more and more. To the point where you’re 55, but behave like you’re 95.

On the flip side, you can start looking for evidence that you’re getting better at something. Want to get stronger, even though you’re 60? Start strength training. If you’ve never strength trained, to go from doing no strength training to doing strength training, you can be stronger at 61 than at 60. Do strength training consistently for 10 years, and you’ll be stronger at 70, than you are at 60.

For instance, one of our honourable mentions for client of the year for 2015 was Gord. He started training with me in 2010 years ago, when he was 70. Now, at almost 82, he’s stronger than he was 11 years ago, at 70.

Want help doing the same thing? You can see if you qualify to work with us by responding to this email with the words “Better with Age” in the subject line.

Healthy Aging Attitude #2: Participate in Activities that Make You Feel Younger

What are activities that are associated with youth? Sports, strength training, travel, learning new things, etc.

So what should you participate in? Those exact activities. Participate in sports, like tennis, squash, racquetball, etc. One 73-year-old gentleman I know even started doing jiu jitsu in his 70s. World’s oldest person to ever live, Jean Calment only started fencing in her 80s.

As you age, you get weaker. Want to counteract that? Participate in strength training. To my earlier point, it’s cool to see yourself getting stronger, while your same-age peers are getting weaker.

Healthy Aging Attitude #3: Spend Time with Younger People

As the same 73-year-old gentleman says, “want to feel old? Spend time with old people. Want to feel young? Spend time with younger people.”

When I visit my grandma, I hear the conversations that other people in her building have.

“Oh, my back hurts.”

“I’m not sleeping well.”

“My doctor put me on insulin.”

“My friend just had a knee replacement.”

Not exactly things that give you hope for yourself. But if these are the kinds of people you spend most of your time with, you start to feel old. You want to contribute to the conversation, so you start to think about your own aches and pains. Even if they weren’t all that bad, to begin with, the more you talk and imagine them, the worse they get.

Eventually, you might catch these statements coming out of your own mouth.

Healthy Aging Attitude #4: Have Something to Look Forward to

You should have something in the short-to-medium term (3 months-2 years) that you can look forward to. If you sign up for a competition, like a 10K, or powerlifting, there is obvious training that goes into it. And eventually, once you reach that goal, you feel very accomplished. But it also gives you something to get better at.

Likewise, there are other things to look forward to. If you like to travel, set up trips to places that you want to visit that require some level of fitness. After all, traveling isn’t fun if you spend most of your time out of breath and tired.

Healthy Aging Attitude #5: Reframe Your Pains

Sure, you may get injuries or certain pains, but what you attribute those injuries and aches/pains to is what will make the difference in your body.

A lot of people attribute their aches and pains to their age. “My back hurts because I’m old.” Too bad, because that’s not something that you can control.

Whenever you catch yourself thinking like that, you have to reframe it as “my back hurts because I have imbalances around my back, core, and hip muscles, and if I correct those imbalances, the pain will go away.”

As you read about in my feature article on how Anne got rid of her hip pain, we had identified the muscular imbalances surrounding her hips, and fixed those. No imbalances, no pain. If she had attributed her hip pain to her age, she would have had to live with it getting worse over time, and possibly needing a hip replacement.

With anything, there are controllable factors, and uncontrollable factors. So with the uncontrollable factors, fogedaboutit (that’s “forget about it” with an Italian gangster accent), and with the controllable factors, identify what they are, and well… control them.

If you need help identifying and fixing muscular imbalances, so that you can feel younger, more agile, and more energetic, you can feel free to see if you qualify to work with us by responding to this email with the words “Better with Age” in the subject line.

P.S. – Whenever you’re ready… here are 4 ways we can help you reach your goals:

  1. If you’re in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), work with us 1 on 1.
If you want to work one-on-one with one of the top trainers in the GTA to help you reach your health & fitness goals, this is for you. if you’re interested just reply and put “Personal Training” in the subject line. We’re currently offering both personal training at our Markham facility (on highway 404 and Steeles), as well as virtual training (guided workouts).
  2. Join Our Online Coaching Program.
If you’re outside of the GTA, but still want to benefit from ‘best in class’ health & fitness expertise and professional coaching, we offer online coaching. It includes everything that in-person training involves (access to your trainer by phone / email / video, professional program design, nutritional guidance, etc.), but this is online. If you want to find out more, just reply and put ‘Online Coaching’ in the subject line.
  3. Get a Personalized Fitness Program for you to Follow on Your Own, Without A Trainer
Sometimes, you don’t need the motivation, but you need a professional program that you trust will work. Maybe you aren’t ready to invest in working with a trainer 2-3 times per week, but still want great results. We can develop a unique plan for you that accounts for your personal circumstances, schedule, equipment availability and goals. You would follow this program on your own, without a trainer. If you’re interested in learning more, reply and put ‘Program ‘ in the subject line.
  4. Have A Health & Fitness Consultation.
Want some personalized advice about a health & fitness situation that you have? Book a consultation, and we’ll help you separate good advice from bad, thereby saving you lots of time and frustration. If you’re interested, just reply to this email, and in the subject line, write ‘Consultation.’

Young Adult Stroke Treatment in Ontario

Ontario Young Adult Stroke Treatment

Prepared by: Jim McEwen
ON’s Representative of Young Adult Stroke Survivors between ages 20 and 64
Nov. 9, 2021

This is an update to original research originally undertaken in August 2016 relating to denied physiotherapy to Ontario’s young adult stroke survivors on the basis of age.

Ontario Designated Physiotherapy clinics
[contacted in 2021 to determine if they provide government-funded physiotherapy for young adult stroke survivors between ages 20 and 64 under Ontario’s Community Physiotherapy Clinic Program]:

  1. Central Park Physiotherapy, 455 Simcoe Street South, Oshawa, Ph: 905 725 4241
  2. Durham Physiotherapy Wellness Centre, 575, Thornton Road, North, Oshawa, Ph: 905 725 8359
  3. Oshawa Clinic, 29 Charles Street, Oshawa, Ph: 905 725 8551
  4. Phma Grant, P.T. 1-154 King Street East, Bowmanville, Ph: 905 697 8001
  5. We-Fix-U Physiotherapy, 77 William Street Cobourg, Ph: 905 373 7045
  6. Physiotherapy Associates, 462 Paxton Street, Port Perry, Ph: 905 985 8363
  7. Clair Dufferin Physiotherapy Inc., 2202-909, Jane Street, York, Ph: 416 604 4404
  8. Main and Gerrard Physiotherapy 94 Main Street, Toronto, Ph: 416 789 5936 &
  9. York Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre 977 Eglinton Ave. West, York, Ph: 416 781 3945
  10. Life Mark Markham Physiotherapy 377 Church Street, Markham, Ph: 905 471 4259
  11. Abira Physiotherapy 4256 Bathurst Street, Suite 200, North York, Ph: 647 351 2500
  12. Windsor Physiotherapy Services 13278 Tecumseh Road East, Suite 200, Tecumseh, Ph: 519 735 2152
  13. Cornwall Physiotherapy Clinic 17373 South Branch Road Cornwall, Ph: 613 932 2447
  14. Newcastle Physiotherapy, 87 Mill Street North, Newcastle Ph: 1-905-987-4533

The clinics listed above will not provide government-funded physiotherapy services to our young adult stroke survivors between ages 20 and 64 because of a lack of billing Codes for this age group. They will only provide government-funded physiotherapy to Post-Acute Care stroke patients who are over age 65 or under age 19. Special consideration may be given for young adults if one is on Provincial Social Assistance such as ODSP or Ontario Works. Furthermore, a young adult survivor has to suffer a second stroke before qualifying for more government-funded treatment. They will provide services to young adult survivors only if they pay for such services. Such services may be partially covered by private insurance plans. Typically, patients must pay upfront and make a claim with their insurance company. Insurance policies have limits on available health services.

To make matters worse in Durham Region our Lakeridge Healthcare system has a policy of automatically denying more stroke treatment/physiotherapy if one’s stroke took place over 12 months ago.

Conclusions:

  1. Most young adult stroke survivors in Ontario continue to be automatically denied government-funded physiotherapy on the basis of outdated provincial Regulations and healthcare policies and age.
  2. These young adults between 20 and 64 are being denied the opportunity to recover to their best potential and possibly return to work or continue their Post-Secondary Studies.
  3. Ontario’s young adult stroke survivors are prematurely cashing in Retirement Savings/Plans to purchase private and expensive stroke recovery programs. Such Plans should be for retirement and not for funding healthcare in a supposed public healthcare system. Survivors without Savings and RRSPs simply go without treatment.
  4. We need a Provincial healthcare system based on why young adult stroke survivors qualify for more treatment as opposed to a system that looks for reasons to deny treatment. Affective Legislation is needed in Ontario to fix this problem and the starting point is to rescind outdated and age-restrictive healthcare Regulations at Ontario’s Parliament (Queens Park).
  5. Lakeridge Health needs to take a serious look at its outdated Policy of automatically denying treatment if one’s stroke took place over 12 months ago with the goal of eliminating this Policy.
  6. The Ontario healthcare system typically provides good Acute or Initial stroke treatment/physiotherapy regardless of age. The gaps in treatment for most young adult survivors commence after the patient is discharged home from the hospital or rehab center. There is a significant deficiency in outpatient care for Ontario’s young adult stroke patients.
  7. We need to eliminate these age-discriminatory healthcare policies for the next generations of young adult stroke patients/survivors in Ontario as stroke rises in younger adults of Canada. We need to do better for Ontario’s young adults; they do not have $200,000.00 in Savings or RRSPs to deal with a disabling stroke.
  8. Ontario’s Designated Physiotherapy Clinics authorized to direct-bill the province will not provide government-funded services for stroke survivors between ages 20 and 64 because there are no billing codes for this age group. The hands of these Clinics are tied until the province takes action at Queens Park.
  9. The Ford Government needs to immediately expand its government-funded Community Physiotherapy Clinic Program to include stroke survivors between the ages of 20 and 64, with a doctor’s referral and after completion of initial Rehab programs.

Some responses from Ontario clinics:

Mr. McEwen:
Unfortunately, Ontario’s Health Ministry has strict requirements, the only way they’d be covered under government-funded physio is if:

  • They are 19 or younger, 65 or older
  • On ODSP or Ontario Works Or
  • have been admitted overnight into the hospital for the same thing we’d be treating them for within the last year.

Mr. McEwen:

This is definitely a problem we see every day.

The only way we can take a patient aged 20-64 is if they have proof of overnight stay for the condition they are referred for and that they have not received a course of treatment before. As per the Health ministry, we are in the same boat as all other clinics that have a permit to provide care.

The most we can do is offer private pay sessions. Sometimes, it’s worth the initial assessment if they have not been seen or had treatment in a long time, we can get them back on the train tracks in terms of routine, and then re-evaluate to see if further sessions would be needed.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do to assist. Thanks,

Jim McEwen’s stroke experience

The Story of Jim McEwen’s stroke experience

I am a Professional Civil Engineering consultant living in Bowmanville, Ontario, east of Toronto. I am retired.

In March 2010 I was driving home from a meeting in Hamilton, Ont. and I noticed white lightning crossing my eyes. I placed a hand over one eye and noticed I had no eyesight in the other eye. One eye felt like it was going to explode. I pulled over and used my OnStar system to call for an ambulance. With the GPS system, the ambulance attendants easily found me. I told the attendants of my symptoms and that I was likely experiencing a stroke. At this stage, I was able to walk from my car to the ambulance. Unfortunately, the ambulance attendants took me to a hospital without a stroke protocol meaning there were no Neurologists on staff and they did not have the cclot-bustingdrug. While in the ambulance my eyesight returned. I waited for an hour before a doctor visited me in the hospital ER. While in Emergency I fell to the floor and suffered a significant event. They gave me a CT scan and said they found bleeding around the brain. They ordered another ambulance to take me to St. Michaels hospital in Toronto where they have neurologists and stroke protocols. While in St. Michaels they gave me another CT scan and concluded I had experienced a stroke from a dissection of the carotid artery. By this time, it was too late to give me the clot-busting drug. After questioning by the Neurologist, he surmised the likely cause of my stroke.

I received excellent treatment, care, and initial physiotherapy while at St. Michaels. Due to bleeding around the brain, a portion of my skull was removed and placed in a hospital freezer. Three months later my missing skull was reinstated.

After a month in the hospital, I transferred to the EW Bickle Rehab Centre, Toronto for low-tolerance physiotherapy.

In June 2010 I was transferred to the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute (TRI). On the second day, I was assessed and given my discharge date of six weeks later. This is when I realized that stroke treatment is all about timed limited services and if you do not recover, too bad for you.

I received excellent physiotherapy at TRI. My goal was to walk with a quad cane so I could walk my daughter down the aisle in September at her wedding. This goal was met. The TRI kept me for one extra week to allow for modifications at my house.

Once home I received outpatient physiotherapy through my local healthcare system. Again, this came with a time limit which amounted to 12 one-hour sessions. On the 12th day, I asked my social worker to stay longer in the outpatient program as I still could not bathe or dress myself. To this day I still cannot bathe or dress myself. I need a PSW every morning which is funded by my local healthcare system.

My social worker responded with, “YOU’RE DONE, GO HOME AND FIGURE IT OUT FOR YOURSELF”. I was not impressed with the harshness of the message. I believe that discharge protocols have improved significantly since 2010 at this outpatient facility in Whitby, Ontario.

My stroke took place at the young age of 55. I was basically forced into early retirement at 55 and lost the best earning years of my career, ultimately impacting CPP in retirement.

I wrote to Ontario Health Minister Deb Mathews in the Fall of 2010 explaining my situation and requesting more publicly funded stroke treatment. Just before my 56th birthday, I received a lovely response letter from the Minister. I was informed that only survivors who are 19 and younger and those 65 and older qualify for more publicly funded stroke treatment in Ontario. Because of my age of 55, I did not qualify for more treatment. This was the first time in my life I experienced alleged discrimination.

I attended a private clinic in Toronto with a Lokomat where I was suspended from the ceiling in a harness and robotics were attached to my feet while walking on a moving treadmill. I attended for two months as the costs were quite high for a person not working. Each session was approximately $200.00 with limited private insurance coverage.

My doctor recommended a private physiotherapy clinic to secure neurological physiotherapy. I am no longer attending this clinic as their staff turnover is too high. I now attend the Whitby Abilities Centre with a private trainer.

Between 2010 and 2020 I spent approximately $20,000.00 per year, out of pocket to purchase private and expensive stroke recovery programs not covered by any insurance, public or private. I have a saying, “RRSPs should be for retirement and not for funding healthcare”. If it was not for retirement savings, I would never have afforded my very limited recovery to date. Many Canadians, especially our young ones do not have easily accessible retirement funds to deal with a stroke.

In the Spring of 2016, I took the Wynne government and Ontario Health Ministry before the Human Rights Tribunal Ontario with a complaint of age discrimination. Again, I cannot discuss the outcome as I selected Mediation. Since 2010 I have signed three non-disclosure agreements related to my stroke experience.

Since 2015 I have been trying to convince Ontario to eliminate age discrimination in stroke treatment with some recent success. In 2016 I helped the Official Opposition to develop Bill 9, “Improving Post-stroke Physiotherapy for All Act2016” and pass it into new healthcare law. Unfortunately, the Wynne government refused to implement Bill 9 as intended. Ontario is now in the early stages of developing a new Post-stroke Rehabilitation Program for survivors of all ages.

I am hoping to join our Durham Regional Accessibility Advisory Committee where I feel I can be of assistance with my professional background and newly gained experience in accessibility.

My 11 grandchildren help me to remain positive as I try to be the best grandfather for them. I have a very special relationship with my grandchildren.

A Grade 12 student from Oshawa, Ontario, has written a Paper about my stroke experience and journey.

My physical recovery has been limited but fortunately, my cognitive function was not impacted and I try to help other stroke survivors with their new experience, giving them a new sense of purpose.

I have left-side paralysis and no function of my left arm/hand. Walking throughout my house is possible with a quad cane. I have an electric wheelchair for outings.

My limited research shows that New Brunswick has one of the best provincial Post-Stroke recovery programs. They do not appear to have age restrictions for young adult stroke survivors seeking further recovery. In my experienced opinion, a national stroke recovery policy or Initiative is needed to ensure consistency of post-stroke services across Canada. We should not be forced to move to New Brunswick for publicly funded healthcare. The Canada Health Act clearly states that the Provinces and Territories shall not impede healthcare delivery with financial or other barriers. Arbitrary Barriers in Post-stroke treatment/recovery must be removed.

After 12 years I feel very comfortable with myself and life. I am very fortunate to have a loving wife who has totally accepted our situation. Prior to the pandemic, we were spending two winter months in Florida in a rental unit of a seniors’ community. Traveling after a stroke is still possible with good prior planning. After my stroke, we have flown to Calgary on two separate occasions for family weddings and no issues. Hopefully, our traveling will return after the pandemic has passed.

Potential and sometimes limited stroke recovery is possible if you work at it every day. Now twelve years later I feel that my recovery has peeked.

The best suggestion I can give to new stroke survivors is to find a private neurological physiotherapist. And don’t be shy about setting up a “GO-FUND-ME” account to pay for this medical service. This will help to raise attention to the poor job our public healthcare system is doing in helping stroke survivors of all ages.

I am an active member of the Stroke Survivors Advocacy Group of Canada and continue to advocate for fair and equitable post-stroke recovery services funded by our healthcare systems.

Caregivers of dementia suffering loved ones

An open letter to caregivers caring for loved ones suffering from dementia:

There are no words that can change your situation. Maybe no words that can bring you comfort and strength in this very trying situation.

You’re drained, so much energy given in the hope-filled battle against a malady that is relenting and unyielding. I am not in that situation, but I am trying to understand what it would be like to be there. You must be exhausted, daily attendance with your loved one, hoping things might improve just a little, for a few moments, just a brief light of momentary recovery. But that moment never comes.

What can you do? Where can you find the energy? How do you keep going on?

I wish I had the answers that would improve things for you, just a little. I don’t have them. The only words I have may sound clichéd and mundane, but they are said with sincerity and honesty. You have to go on, giving care as if….as if you could make a difference. You actually are making a difference. Not only that, but you’re giving your loved one loving care, respectful care, care with dignity, the kind of care every loved one should get and deserves.

Be there. Bring music, Bring books to read to the loved one. Touch them. Hold their hand. Talk to them. Reminisce for them. Talk about happy times, family times, times of joy and love. There may be no overt reaction to all this, but the love you are showing is reaching them. They may not be able to react, but their heart, their soul will. They will hear your words. Furthermore, they will react, though you won’t see any overt reaction. Believe it. Believe it is reaching them, and they feel it, soothing their soul, comforting their heart. They hear you. They feel the love.

Do it every day for as long as you feel your strength is there, but save some strength for tomorrow because tomorrow you will have to do it again. So you need to care for yourself too. Save some strength, save some energy because your loved one feels your love when you bring the caring that you do when you give the care you are giving.

And pray. Even if you are a non-believer, just pray to a higher power to give you a little more energy today, just a bit more strength which you can use in your caring work.

You are making a difference. Your loved one has someone there, caring and loving and remembering for them. Your loved one has love being given to them, and that brings them strength and energy along with the feeling they have not been abandoned. They have not, not while you are breathing, living and caring.

I pray for more strength for you and hope you find the energy and drive you need each day as you bring love and comfort to someone who needs it so much now.

Dec 6 – Car probs, convalescence probs, counting probs…

Rotzy’s got it all covered as he writes about Edna, Mz Jo and countin’ on one’s fingers…

Edna The SUV….
….is….as they/we used to say back in the day….’running like a top’. Our 2015 Equinox has received a lot of ‘attention’/$$$’s in the past month or so, after basically having been ‘retired/semi-retired’ since we landed here in Brant’s Ford 4 years, 2 months and 5 days ago. ‘Parked’….as Miz Jo eventually decided to hang up her keys/retire from ‘big city driving’, having much preferred getting around on gravel logging roads in and around Nakina where she didn’t have to be concerned about traffic lights, more than two lanes of traffic, bicycle lanes, heavy traffic and/or parking. (*in Nakina we didn’t ‘park’ our vehicle per se….we just ‘left it’….wherever….until we needed it again. Hence, Edna landed on parking spot #132 here at Harris Place. When it did move, Miz. Jo became Miss Daisy and Rotzy The Driver….minus the ‘chauffeur’s hat’. Yours truly’s vehicle of choice was Norm The Truck a 2007 Nissan 4×4 pickup. We sold Norm nine months ago and Edna came outta ‘semi-retirement’, with a mere 30,000 k/m’s on her. (for 3 years prior it was just a ‘now and then Miss Daisy drive/trip’) By the bye, I sold Norm because Rotzy can’t drive two vehicles at once and Edna won the Who Stays? vote. She did fine for 6-7 months, then she ‘didn’t want to stop’….and that can be problematic, if you get my drift. So….SO….in to see The Midas Man, but instead it was The Midas Woman, who said ”you need brakes, sir….all around”….and I did!. Need brakes. Done….big chunk of cash and Rotzy damn near went through the ****ing windshield first tyme I ‘applied them’. Then last week Edna developed a ‘scraping sound’….one of our neighbours even noticed it from her balcony….a bent ‘wheel dust plate’ likely from Rotzy ‘driving over curbs’. Whilst there, the Midas Mechanic Guy noticed my Stabilizer Bar….aka the Sway Bar….was ‘not good at all’. They installed it a couple days later and now Edna ‘runs like a top’ (*see above), almost like BRAND NEW! There was ONE more thing Edna needed. You see, Edna has ‘nuts’!! Really. On her wheels. And she needed twenty of them! The BIG chrome nuts that GM puts on their vehicles, the FANCY/SCHMANTZY/SHINEY nuts. The ones that cost $7.50! Each. You know HOW MANY nuts Edna has? 20…..yes, TWENTY! Do the math. S–t. As to the sway bar….it steers/handles better than EVER and is SO damned quiet Rotzy’s thinking the original one wasn’t installed properly, a ”Friday afternoon special” as we used to say at GM Oshawa. Never mind, Ford, Chrysler and all the ‘imports’ do the same. BTW….Edna already has her Xmas present….she got Xmas Nuts!

Update On Miz. Jo
Firstly….thanks for your kind words, thoughts and prayers. For the unknowing, she went into BGH in the early ayem Monday Nov 21st with a severe case of pneumonia, initially listed as ‘Critical’. And she certainly was. Critical. Now altho there has been ‘some improvement’ in her condition, she is ‘not out of the woods’ as of yet, which is largely due to a bad blood infection and to date various antibiotics haven’t had a positive effect. But Rotzy’s noticed ‘some improvement in her overall condition….like her appetite, which seems to be returning! She had chili con carne last night for supper! and ‘LIKED IT’!! And that’s coming from the lady who made ‘the best con carne in Nakina’. Miz. Jo met with the dietician yesterday morning and they made some changes in her menu….yes, chili is on the new list. Whatever. She needs to get some weight back on. And methinks Rotzy can see the light at the end of the tunnel! Thanks again. (*Update* Jo Ann was quickly/out of the blue transferred one floor up to #6 at suppertyme Sat (which they totally ‘forgot’) as BGH declared a COVID outbreak….methinks 13 cases confirmed and I think they landed on #6. Of course….no visitors. The tunnel light might Lovely.

W E H T ?
A GOOD one today, with an assist from ‘The Shift’, Global Radio’s nighttime talk show which originates in Calgary and Vancouver….Greg Fish was talking with guest host Rob Fay about the scientific ‘prolonging of life’ for days/weeks/months/years/decades/centuries/forever. It’s a fascinating topic/thought….if you think about it a while….basically ‘freezing the brain’ of a person at the moment their death….or as close to it as possible….with the ‘plan’ being to ‘re-start it’ somewhere down the road. Of course they use/welcome ‘subjects’ with VERY HIGH/MENSA-like IQ’s (*Doug Ford need not apply!) ‘Athletes’ were also mentioned as potentials candidates for said program, of course it would be their superior athletic ability on the playing field/in the arena that would hold the scientists interest. So….SO….*What Ever Happened To Ted Williams Brain? The former Boston Red Sox baseball player, aka ”The Splendid Splinter’ passed away from cancer some years ago….20 or more? Hey, no matter…the slugger had ALREADY made arrangements to have his grey matter put on ice until someone decides to bring you back to Earth. That’s ‘the downer part’ of it all,….YOU don’t flip the switch….how CAN you? you’re DEAD, remember? Hence, with THAT being the way you get re-activated….by others….how in hell could the entire Bosox Nation of fans/the Fenway Faithful, ‘sit on their hands’ through all of this past disaster of a season??!! Sucking the hind teat in the ALCS East/all but eliminated from the playoffs in early July!/with visions of ‘The Yaz’ and ‘Big Papi’ dancing in the heads of The Grand Old Lady’s faithful. Goodness me! With The Splendid Splinter sitting in the ice box of some scientist’s lab. Imagine. Take me out to the ball game.

Readers Write….
….and today it’s Reg (not his real name)….with a fine sense of humour for an olde guy. Check ’em out; *When I lost three fingers on my right hand in a freak accident at work, I asked the doctor if I’d still be able to write. He said ”Probably, but I wouldn’t count on it”. *Anyone who says ‘their Wedding Day was the best day of their life’ has clearly never had TWO candy bars drop down at once from a vending machine! Great stuff!! Keep ’em coming folks!!

17 – Long COVID, DEMENTIA, MEMORY LAPSES…worrisome and bothersome

It may be misconceptions, self-delusion or just erroneous thinking but lately, there are things that bother me much more than ever before:

  • I feel I am aging faster than before;
  • I forget things much more quickly than before;
  • I cannot recall things as well as I used to;
  • Relegating things to my memory doesn’t guarantee they’ll be there when I call on them again;
  • Comprehension seems to be slowing down and less likely to complete successfully;
  • I can’t remember many things that happened recently, who I spoke with, or what we talked about:
  • Some recent occurrences seem to be beyond my memory’s long-term retention capabilities.

Noticeable incidents in my life occur from time to time, likely factors of aging. Still they are worrisome and bothersome. A wonderous process of this aging, each day a completely new experience even if some things look like they were done before.

COLLATERAL DAMAGE, Stuart Woods

COLLATERAL DAMAGE
 Stuart Woods

Stuart Woods at his usual, thrilling scenarios written in polished prose. An adult’s comic book in words. Woods never fails to deliver an enjoyable quick read.

Synopsis
Stone Barrington is back in Manhattan and pleased to receive an unexpected visit from his friend and sometime lover Holly Barker, now an assistant director at the CIA. For her part, Holly is glad to leave the staid, official environs of the capital for the dining and atmosphere of New York, but her sojourn isn’t only for pleasure. An explosive incident requires her immediate attention—and Stone’s investigative expertise.

But what initially appears to be a clear-cut case soon becomes increasingly complex—and dangerous. For in the secretive world of government intelligence, national interests all too often conflict with power grabs and turf wars, and extreme wealth allows even the most pursued rivals to slip through the cracks. As Stone and Holly follow the trail from London’s posh embassy district to Manhattan’s Upper East Side, they learn just how well the most cunning plans can be disguised . . . and how far some people will go to wreak vengeance.

Richard says
Stuart Woods never fails to deliver an enjoyable read for adults. If you a fan of his character, Stone Barrington, you’ll enjoy this book also. It’s foundations are built on all the other Stone Barrington books, with a revisitation of their characters and the plots. But the book never bores. It’s light reading with entertaining dialogue and many referrals to Elaine’s and her lamented proprietor.

Enjoyable.

Reach Out and Touch Somebody

Those lyrics are from a song written by Neil Sedaka. He and many other artists recorded it fifty years ago. During and certainly after COVID, those lyrics have meaning for those who have been socially isolated and lonely, especially as we enter the holiday season.

Loneliness and social isolation in older adults are serious public health risks affecting a significant number of people in Canada and putting them at risk for dementia and other serious medical conditions.

Older adults are at increased risk for loneliness and social isolation because they are more likely to face factors such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and hearing loss. A new international study published by the National Academies of Science and Medicine points out that more than one-third of adults aged 55 and older feel lonely. Nearly one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are socially isolated.

Social isolation is a lack of social connections. Loneliness is feeling alone, regardless of the amount of social contact. Although it’s hard to measure social isolation and loneliness precisely, there is strong evidence that many adults aged 50 and older are socially isolated or lonely in ways that put their health at risk. Recent studies found that:

  • Social isolation significantly increases a person’s risk of premature death from all causes, a risk that may rival those of smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity.
  • Social isolation was associated with a 50% percent risk of dementia.
  • Loneliness was associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide.
  • Loneliness among heart failure patients was associated with a nearly four times increased risk of death, 68% increased risk of hospitalization, and 57% increased risk of emergency department visits.

Now some people may like being alone. It is also important to note that social isolation and loneliness are two distinct aspects of social relationships and are not significantly linked. Both can put health at risk, however.

If you know of someone alone, pick up the phone and reach out and touch someone during the holiday season.

Ya think #01 was too cynical in BITCH Shoppe, consider Ford’s  govt…something to really bitch about:

If you have doubts about the sincerity and merit of the #01 democracy-dictatorships comment, Just look at government by Doggie Ford. Keep yourself informed about the Doggie Ford government and its activities relating to:

  • hospitals situation currently;
  • Greenbelts in Ontario vs provision for more affordable housing;
  • long-term care vs availability and feasibility of alternate strategies/endeavours;
  • assistance to low-wage earners

01 – ‘Democratic dictatorships,’ our current governments

“Letters to the editor” writer, Diana Gould, Uxbridge, writes that her late father called our governments ‘democratic dictatorships.’ A very astute categorization of our current governments, national, provincial and municipal.

Think about it. You vote for a new representative in whatever government based on platform and promises, a basis for your hope for improving living conditions: less tax, more constructive action on promises, environmental management, social improvements, dealing with negative issues in the community. Simply said, we all want better living conditions and hope that the newly elected reps will deliver as many of their promises as they can.

Within weeks, if not days, after the election ends, we’re back to “same old, same old,” which many would summarize as politicians who work their own agendas regardless of their constituents, regardless of the promises they made. Perhaps the electorate is much closer to the truth in their cynical conclusions about all politicians: “They’re all the same and never change.” They may have a point but whether you agree or not, it may be why election turnouts remain low no matter whatever attempt to improve the numbers.

Once elected, government reps at every or any level do their own thing until the end of their term in office comes back into view. Then, once again, they don their campaign masks and promise the electorate they are the new purveyors of paradise for the public. Ballots cast, elections concluded, return to “democratic dictatorship”

Nothing can be done? Bologna!!! In reality, the question is more of “how concerned are you?” or “how upset are you with this possible hypocrisy?” Record what they do, log their work for the next few years, so when the next campaign begins you really know the candidate’s history in office and can vote accordingly for your next dictator.

WARNING: Too much sitting = earlier trip to graveyard

I work in the office for more than 3 hours a day, far too long, far too much sitting. This prolonged sitting is compounded by 2-3 hrs of TV watching at night. My Fermo walk of about an hour does little to compensate for all that sitting.

Ian McClymont writes an excellent blog relating to fitness and this past issue has a particularly relevant piece about sitting too much. Don’t be frightened by the piece…just make some appropriate changes to your day’s sitting. You’re only gain will be more life !

EDITORIAL: Oh no, not the same old, same old

Oh no, not the same old, same old !

Great expectations! For naught!

There was some expectation election of half a new council would portend new directions, new initiatives.

The reality seems to be much of the “same old, same old.” Perhaps we may be jumping to the wrong conclusions prematurely, a sign of impatience. But when councillors say one thing, promising something easily executed, and then fail to deliver, it is too easy to slip into the old mode of uneasiness.

A couple of councillors have promised greater transparency, greater accountability. They likely mean in ’23 as hollow words have been spoken to this point.

Let’s cut the new council some slack, give them a little elbow room. Likely they haven’t even found the councillors’ bathroom yet. BTW, now there’s a need for a women’s washroom!

Let’s watch and see.

PREVENTING PORCH PIRATES

Helpful tips to keep your packages safe
by MATTHEW GUY

AS THE HOLIDAYS approach, more Canadians shop online. Last year, consumers in Canada planned to spend about 37 percent of their gift budget online, reports Statista, an international market, and consumer analysis company.

With all these added deliveries, it’s also prime time for thieves to steal packages right from your front door. According to finder.com, a comparison and information platform, one in four Canadians have had their deliveries stolen. Ten percent of those lost an item worth more than $250.

Fortunately, there are ways you can help protect your shipments.

Basic protection

If you expect to be home when packages arrive, ask the shipper to require a signature when possible.

If you won’t be around:

  • ask the courier to deliver the parcel to a trusted neighbour
  • opt to pick up your package in-store

If you’re handy, consider repurposing an old chest or dresser into a delivery box for parcels. Place it in an inconspicuous spot on your porch, secure it with a lock and let your courier know how to access it.

Go high-tech

Combat would-be thieves with technology.

  • Install a doorbell camera, which allows you to monitor and record any activity at your door. Some are accessible directly from a smartphone and allow for two-way talking.
  • Use motion-sensor lights to scare away potential stealers.
  • Set up security cameras to discourage trespassers wary of being recorded.
  • Purchase a package guard or porch pirate bag, a reinforced nylon bag that locks to your front door or gate. Instruct the courier to place your package inside and close it using the combination lock.

With these proactive measures, you’ll deter those looking to add your packages to their own gift list.

14 – NIGHT VISION and DRIVING AT NIGHT

Source: CAA Magazine, Winter 2022
Driving after dark has its dangers. Keep these
five safety tips in mind to reduce risk for all road users.
                                             Doug Wallace

KEEP YOUR LIGHTS ON
People driving with their lights off is a huge problem according to Sean Shapiro, a police constable with Toronto Traffic Safety. “In our reliance on technology, there’s the assumption that your car will automatically activate the headlights,” he says, “but the lights may not be on—making you what I call a ghost car.”

SLOW DOWN
Often the lower volume of traffic on the road at night creates a false sense of security,

making drivers feel like they can be less attentive. “People tend to go a little faster because it can appear like you have the open road,” Shapiro says. “But the faster you’re going, the less response time you have. Damage, injury, and the chance of death increase with that speed.” Notably, the rate of fatalities reported to Toronto Police Services during nighttime hours is 142 percent higher than during the day.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
Use extra caution at night. Be on the lookout for reckless or impaired drivers, stalled cars, pedestrians in dark clothing, and wildlife on the road. “Very often at night, drivers are tired and not paying attention.”, Shapiro says. “So you’re not anticipating that kid playing ball on the street or the pedestrian crossing in front of you.”

DRIVE CAUTIOUSLY
You won’t be able to see as far ahead at night. “In very dark areas, you can’t see what you’re driving into,” Shapiro says. “This is an obvious recipe for a collision.”

CLEAR LINE OF VISION
A clean windshield and headlights will help you see better. Make sure your headlights are aligned properly to the road and use your high beams only when necessary. Keep interior lights low so the dash is visible but not distracting when you look at it. Avoid staring into oncoming headlights and, if possible, don’t drive on two-lane highways, which are known for nighttime glare.

Remain alert and drive safely when out at night.

EDITORIAL: ADDENDUM – Inaugural council meeting, Nov 21

The new council for the City of Pickering was sworn in at City Hall, evening of Nov. 21.

Something old, something new…a council worth watching!

This council is a vibrant and dynamic blend of new and veteran, men and women, young and older, traditionalists and new wave, Christian, Jewish and Muslim, and so many other features. A beautiful council, led very demonstrably by a new mayor who if the inauguration suggests the future, one which will act like family and act for families. The new mayor made the inauguration ceremony feel like a special family gathering. We hope his warmth, caring and friendship are blended into this council and into the community of Pickering.

One may have been too awed or too excited by the inauguration to see how special this council is, let us review some things  from the event that affirm that this may be a council for the times.

  • There were immigrant parents there, proud Canadians standing even prouder and taller in seeing their child sitting in such an honourable and lofty chair, a place they would never have dreamed for their child;
  • With those same parents sat an octagenarian grandma, an immigrant too, smiling  broadly while nodding her head in proud affirmation of her grandchild’s achievement  though her own English was too limited to understand any of the speeches;
  • A significant other, a bastion of pride, standing solitarily as he shouted out, “Bravo ‘first name’ of councillor” with great pride, national pride and heartfelt love;
  • A council member reminiscing publicly of his roots sown in Jewish traditions, holding aloft the special family bible while publicly acknowledging his many prayers for the improved health and well-being of his wife;
  • A handicapped spectator sitting nearby, watching and then cheering with emotion and  energetic exuberance for the councillor mother boasting of campaign victory be significantly due to her autistic son’s assistance and hard work;
  • The pride and appreciation flowed like wafts of heated breezes touching every spectator as a 25-year veteran, an eight-term councillor spoke quietly in praise of his family and  his many dedicated volunteer supporters working endlessly, in the cold, the rain and the sunshine; and
  • The empathy and understanding washed over the spectators when the last councillor talked about his family, his late 98-year-old mother and his closest friend being his hardest-working campaign supporters, working tirelessly with dedication to the one goal, another campaign victory and they achieved it.

What a council! It makes one glow with pride and appreciation for being a member of this community.

High reps or low reps

It’s the age-old debate. Coke vs. Pepsi? Chuck Norris vs. Bruce Lee? High reps or low reps? The answer to the first two is quite simple. Coke vs. Pepsi: neither. Chuck Norris vs. Bruce Lee: Chuck Norris (after all, the boogeyman checks for Chuck Norris under his bed. You can see other stupid/funny Chuck Norris facts here). But high reps vs. low reps? Not so simple. By that, I mean, should you use a lower resistance, and do higher repetitions, or should you use a higher resistance and do lower repetitions? That’s what we’ll investigate in this article.

If Your Goal is Strength…

The answer to “what’s best” always starts with a target. What are you trying to do? If your goal is to get stronger, the next question is “what’s your starting point?” If as a starting point, you’re a complete beginner, and either never strength trained, or haven’t strength trained in at least 6 months, then the answer to your question is “it doesn’t matter.” There will be no difference whether you choose to do high repetitions or low repetitions. Any type of strength training will make you stronger than not doing strength training. Initially. As a beginner.

If, on the other hand, you’re not a beginner, then low repetitions (with heavier weight) are far superior for building strength compared to higher repetitions (with lighter weight).

Why?

Because the more advanced you get, the higher the threshold of stimulation for what it takes to make you stronger. What do I mean by that? As a beginner who’s never strength trained before, just doing strength training with a weight that’s around 40% of your maximal capacity will make you stronger. In other words, if you can lift 10 pounds for 1 repetition, doing your exercises with 4 pounds will make you stronger. Again, that’s if you’re a beginner.

As an intermediate trainee (for the sake of standardization, we’ll define “intermediate” as someone who has been strength training correctly, and progressively for at least a year, constantly trying to raise the weight or the repetitions for a year. In other words, if you’ve been training for a year, but you haven’t raised your weights after that period of time, you’re still a beginner), the threshold of what it takes to make you stronger rises to about 60-80% of your maximum.

So whereas when you were a beginner, lifting 40% of your maximum would make you stronger, as an intermediate, you need to lift 60-80% to improve your strength. Anything below that threshold will not build strength. You might maintain strength. You might build muscular endurance. But you won’t get stronger.

An advanced trainee (let’s define that as someone who has been strength training for at least 2 years) has an even higher threshold of what it takes to make him/her stronger. It’s about 80-85%. So this person needs to lift weights that are at least 80-85% of his/her maximum to get stronger. If you’re lifting 80-85%, you’re only doing 5-10 repetitions, at most. If you’re lifting 40%, as our beginner is, you’re lifting it over 20 times.

So if you’re an intermediate or advanced trainee, the answer to “what’s better: high reps or low reps”, the answer is very clearly low reps.

If you want help putting together a program that helps you get stronger, we can help with that. But you have to see if you qualify by responding to this email with the words “Make Me Stronger” in the subject line.

If Your Goal is Muscular Endurance

However, what if your goal isn’t to be as strong as humanly possible? What if your goal is instead muscular endurance?

In that case, the follow-up question becomes “are you trying to get more than 25-30 repetitions, or less?

For example, is there a specific exercise (like pushups), where your performance is being measured? And how many can you already do? If you can do fewer than 25 repetitions of an exercise, then the most direct way to increase your endurance is to actually increase strength. That means doing low reps.

It might sound a bit funny that to increase your performance up to 25 repetitions, you have to do sets of 3-6 repetitions with a heavier weight, but it’s true. After all, who can do more repetitions with 10 pounds: the trainee who has a maximum of 20 pounds, or the trainee who has a maximum of 30 pounds?

Of course it’s the trainee with the 30-pound max, because for that person, 10 pounds only represents 33% of his maximal capacity. Whereas for the trainee with the 20-pound max, 10 pounds represents 50% of his maximal capacity.

This logic works up to the point where you can do 25 repetitions. But what if you can already do 35 or 45 or 50 repetitions of an exercise? At that point, the relationship of strength to endurance changes, and the most direct way to go even higher is to do higher repetitions and lower weight.

But I Just Want to Tone…

  1. You don’t want to lift as much weight as humanly possible. But you don’t exactly want to do 100 pushups either. You just want to look good in a dress, or a suit, or a tank top. In that case, what’s better: higher reps or lower reps?

The answer is (drumroll, please): both

Neither one really has an advantage over the other, and with our clients, we will actually use both high repetitions and low repetitions to get them toned.

I can hear you thinking now “but Igor, aren’t high reps for toning, and low reps for bulking?”

The answer is no. Realistically, there’s really no such thing as “bulking” or “toning.” The body can only do 4 simple things:

  1. Gain muscle
  2. Lose muscle
  3. Gain fat
  4. Lose fat

That’s it. You can’t “tone” a muscle. You can’t “bulk” a muscle. You can’t give yourself “lean, long, swimmers muscles.” You can only do 2 things to your muscles:

  1. Make them bigger
  2. Make them smaller

You can’t change their shape. Not with nutrition, and not with exercise. You can only change their size.

Both high repetitions and low repetitions can make a muscle grow (and therefore, make you “toned”), but for different reasons, that I elaborated on in my article on muscle building.

So the way we use both high repetitions and low repetitions in our clients’ training is usually by starting with 2-4 months on a high repetition program (that’s 15-20 reps), and over time, work our way down to a lower-repetition program (that’s 5-7 reps). After we’ve made our way down, we return back to the high repetition exercise scheme, and repeat the cycle (albeit, with different exercises, tempos, etc).

If you’d like to figure out specifically how to put together a program based on your body, you can see if you qualify to work with us, send an email to igor@torontofitnessonline.com with the subject line “Make Me Stronger.”

Hip pain…our effort to resolve the issue explained here

A while back, I wrote an article about the exact approach that we used with her to decrease her hip pain.

To give you a quick summary:

Anne is a yoga and fitness instructor, who had been having pain in her hip for a very long time, and despite her own background in fitness, couldn’t figure out what to do about it. We set her up with our trainer, Brian, and in a matter of a few months:

  • Her pain almost completely disappeared
  • She was no longer waking up throughout the night because of the pain
  • She had regained lost function that she thought she lost forever, simply due to aging.

Well, her story now continues.

A few months later, she sent me this email:

And even though I will see you this Sunday I still thought I would like to say a few words regarding my progress.

As you may remember I just went on a trip to Iceland [this is of course pre-covid]. My number one goal was to be able to enjoy my trip without restrictions. Well, I was able to do anything that I wanted to on the trip, and it involved a lot of hiking and on rough terrain.

I had no problems at all with my hip, no pain, and even my recent injuries from my accident on the paddleboard seemed to have completely healed, allowing me to carry my suitcases, backpack etc, with ease. There were a couple of girls on our tour in their 20’s and I had just as much strength and energy as they did.

So with a glowing testimonial like that, I decided to write another article, on what Anne and Brian have been doing between her first article and this one to get these kinds of results. And heck, if you want to skip all the theory, and you want us to figure out how to get you similar results, you can see if you qualify to work with us, by responding to this email with the words “Rapid Rehabilitation” in the subject line.

If you want to hear Anne tell her own story, you can check out this 4-minute video.

            In today’s article, we’ll cover:

  • Anne’s paddleboarding injury
  • The nutritional recommendations made
  • The exercise program used despite her injury
  • Her trip to Iceland

Anne’s Paddleboarding Injury

A couple of weeks after the previous article was written about Anne, she sustained an injury when taking a yoga class on a paddleboard (that was in early August). She fell face-first into the board. The result:

  • A rib fracture
  • Partial tear of her pectoral muscle (chest) on the right side
  • Partial tear of other shoulder stabilizer muscles on the right side

That’ll certainly spoil a good trip, and set you back. Most people in Anne’s situation would say “let’s hold off on the personal training, until I’m all healed, and ready to go.” But not Anne. She had the right mentality going into this. She asked Brian, her trainer to modify her personal training, to speed up her recovery. And she asked me for advice on nutrition to speed up her recovery.

The day after the accident, she went to her chiropractor, and asked him for advice. His feedback:

  • She’d need to take 2 weeks completely off training, and off work.
  • During those two weeks, she’d need to take pain killers and anti-inflammatories
  • Get treatment during this time
  • Recovery would take 3-6 months, or longer.

Read on to see how:

  • She got back to training and work in 2 days, instead of two weeks
  • She didn’t need any medications
  • She didn’t need treatment during this time
  • She was back to full recovery in 4 weeks, instead of 3-6 months.

The Nutritional Recommendations Made

Whenever an injury is sustained, a person’s requirements for protein rise immediately. Why? Because bones and muscles are made of protein (it’s not the only thing they’re made of, but it’s a big chunk). An injury puts you in an automatic state of deficiency.

So whereas a “regular” person may need between 0.8 and 1.8 grams per kilogram of protein, during an injury that requirement rises. How high it rises is still a matter of debate, but what isn’t up for debate is that you require more protein to speed up the recovery from an injury.

In one study, two groups of people were compared. One group had a fracture and received a protein supplement (20 extra grams of protein per day). Another group also had a fracture, but didn’t receive a protein supplement. Nothing else between the groups was different (age, location of fracture, etc.). The group that received the protein supplement stayed in the hospital for 33 days. The group that didn’t receive the protein supplement stayed in the hospital for 54 days. Many other studies have confirmed this as well: protein is very helpful for recovery from fractures.

So specifically, what did I recommend? The exact supplement I recommended was MAP (Master Amino Acid Pattern). Why this one, as opposed to whey protein, or casein, or something else? Because of how well-absorbed MAP is. Protein from supplements, and food is absorbed at only about 16%. So if you consume 30 grams of protein, the amount absorbed by the body is only about 5 grams of protein (and the older you get, the lower the absorption). MAP has 99% absorption, on the other hand. I have no financial interest in MAP, by the way.

The other supplement that I recommended was AOR’s Ortho C+. This is vitamin C, plus proline, plus lysine. Why did I recommend this specific one? Because you need all 3 ingredients to make collagen. And what are bones made of? Collagen! Wait. Didn’t I say earlier that bones are made of protein? Yes, I did. And collagen is a specific type of protein. There are many different kinds of proteins, and based on what they do in the body is the term they get. For example, hemoglobin is a protein too. It carries oxygen in the blood. Myoglobin is also a protein. It carries oxygen in the muscle. Likewise, collagen is a protein. This study, in the American Journal of Orthopedics explains in great detail the role of vitamin C in fractures. As with MAP, I have no financial interest in this product either. It’s just a good product.

Within 1 week of taking both MAP and TLC 3.0, Anne said that Brian saw an unexpectedly large difference in strength and range of motion. Anne said she noticed a significant reduction in pain, and bruising.

To be fair, I was quite aggressive with dosages. One thing I learned from attending many of Dr. Robert Rakowski’s seminars is that and I quote “bodies respond to frequency, intensity, duration, quality, and timing of stimuli.” So I stacked all those factors in our favour to achieve unusually fast recovery rates.

The Exercise Program used Despite Her Injury

Where Brian and I are really proud of Anne is her approach. She didn’t just sit on her butt, do nothing, and wait for the injury to heal before getting back into the swing of things. She actually wanted to figure out what she could do despite her injury. High five!

So what did Brian do with her?

First of all, heavy lifting was out for a while, so he decided to work on more “functional” movements with her that involved more fluidity.

A couple of the exercises used were the pendulum lunge, squats, and kettlebell swings.

On the surface, this would seem like it would work the upper body musculature pretty hard, but because the motion is supposed to come from the hips and not the shoulders, it actually allowed Anne to still move her upper body in a way that increased blood flow to the injured regions, and sped up recovery.

In addition to that, Brian continued to do corrective training with her, to improve any muscular imbalances, teach her to activate her core better, and improve her posture.

Other lower body exercises were used as well. Just because your upper body is injured doesn’t mean your lower body gets a break.

Oh, and by the way, remember how in the last article, in July, I mentioned that her hip pain was almost completely gone? Well, now I can drop the word “almost.” The pain is now completely gone.

How long did it take for Anne to recover from a fairly serious injury? Four weeks.

Oh, and originally, Anne came to us primarily for hip pain. Sure, she had a few pounds to lose, but that wasn’t her priority. Now that her hip is all better, she has switched her focus to weight loss, and managed to lose 6 inches from her waist. Maybe we’ll have a third article updating you on Anne’s weight loss progress.

Her Trip to Iceland

Many of our clients love to travel. And not just the “lie on the beach, and do nothing” type of travel. But the sightseeing, adventure type of travel. Anne was no different. For a long time, she had been planning this trip to Iceland that she was looking forward to, and as you read about in her email, that involved a lot of hiking, and on fairly rough terrain.

When you travel, it’s a shame if you’re restricted from fully enjoying your trip due to what people mistakenly call “age.” What they really mean is “lack of energy” or “immobility” or “lack of strength.” Fortunately, you can do something about all those things, and that’s what Anne decided to do.

Not only was she able to hike on rough terrain, she was able to carry suitcases, backpacks, you name it. And she was able to keep up with women in their 20s (when she, herself is in her 50s).

If you’d like to be our next superstar success story, you can see if you qualify to work with us, by responding to this email with the words “rapid rehabilitation” in the subject line.

A tribute to an old friend – RILEY

Good Bye Old Friend — RILEY the Kitty — 22/08/20

It is with great sadness that we had to let our dear friend go.

He had lost more than 50% of his weight after his encounter with a fox at our rear deck railing several weeks before. The encounter left him with an open wound on his right paw and possibly some bone damage to his forearm. After a visit to the VET and about two weeks of antibiotics, he seemed to lose his appetite and continued on a downward spiral.

During the time that he was with us, he provided us with a great deal of entertainment and learning.

In our busy day-to-day lives, we tend to ignore the depth of the personalities of our pets. Riley demonstrated many human traits as well as developing a sense of empathy, caring, and a genuine interest in our lives as a real family member.

‘Gma’ was his FAVOURITE. He would follow her from room to room, and she would talk to him continuously. When she was in the kitchen, he would perch on the back of a chair in the living room where he could watch her. He would lead ‘Gma’ up and down the stairs to our loft while pausing for her at each step of the way. Then he would stretch out on her footstool, waiting for us to shut off the TV and head down to bed.

Around 9:00 pm each evening, he would come up to the loft and indicate that it was time for bed. When I was ready to go off to my room in the basement, he would lead me down the stairs. I would give him his evening treat of Salmon Pate, and we would settle down for the night. During the night, when I had to visit the bathroom, often he would hear the rustling of my blankets and enter my room with a loud MEOW. He would then wait while I got moving. As I stood up, he would turn and look at my cane, as if telling me to pick it up. Then he would lead me to the bathroom, one step ahead, and wait while I did my business. As soon as I flushed the toilet, he would snap back into action and lead me back to bed, one step at a time. Often times he would then actually get on the bed beside me to make sure I was settled in. He would only stay there for a few minutes, as if he actually felt that this was part of his responsibility.

In his last years he even developed a kind of conversational capacity. He would respond to a sequence of phrases when ‘Gma’ would talk to him. He would make several responses over up to 10 second at a time like he was trying to communicate with us, which he was, of course, but we never got to understanding his vocabulary.

There are endless situations where he demonstrated so many different personality traits which we see in everyday human interactions.

We miss you Riley — Gpa & Gma                                             2006-2022 : 16 years

12 Essential Writer Tools [ Fee based ]

This list is dynamic, changing periodically as I receive feedback from writers telling me what they are using.

Word processor
My word processor of choice is Microsoft WORD.
MS WORD is not free, available as a package subscription to MS 365 at about $9/mth (US). It is a fair price for what they provide: WORD, EXCEL, ACCESS, POWERPOINT, ONEDRIVE (1 TB) storage.

  1. Free word processor
Office Libre is a totally free word processing app very comparable to MS WORD.
  2. GRAMMARLY
An app that checks your spelling in the free version, checks much, much more in the paid version. The free version is all you need.
  3. TEXT BLAZE
An essential app if you write many emails or write repetitive phrases, lists, name, organizations. You select the trigger key set and it types in the phrase you set up. It even works in gmails. So if you type many emails this app is a godsend.
  4. EXTENSION
EXTENSIONS as little applets you can use with Google Chrome. There are 1000’s available, almost all are free. Search and you will find numerous ones which will
make you writing easier and more efficient.
An excellent example of a useful extension: Power Thesaurus: type a word for which you want a synonym; instantly receive more than half a dozen.
  5. LASTPASS
Password manager. You should be using one. LASTPASS is not free, $2 US a month. There are comparable free ones available. I have found LASTPASS to be worth the subscription charge.
  6. NOTEZILLA
Electronic POST IT notes. Expensive but once you learn its full capabilities for writing and retaining your note anywhere in your computer work, you will see it is worth every cent.
  7. SCREENPRESSO
A screen capture app, free version is adequate for most uses. Capture images of our computer screen and insert these images in your work.
  8. SCRIVENER
The CADILLAC of word processors. In reality it is far more than a word processor: write sections of your opus, move the sections around as you like, output the sections you want in the format you want. $50 US but it is a tool that only serious writers need. It has a steep learning curve but is an amazing writing tool once you master its basics.
  9. EVERYTHING
Although Windows 10 will find anything you want on your computer, search EVERYTHING is amazingly versatile at finding rough approximations of your file names. Free but worth a price. Pricey alternative: Directory Opus; Free alternative: XYplorer.
  10. EXCEL
Saying this is a spreadsheet that works with numbers is undervaluing the capabilities and uses for this Microsoft program. It can be a data recorder, a list maker, a contacts manager…almost anything that can be made into a list should be using EXCEL. Comes with the MS 365 subscription $9 US/mth
  11. MiMind
MiMind is a powerful mind mapping tool for organizing your thoughts, laying out schemes, and sharing them with your others. Somewhat like doodling but kicked up many notches because it is used with a computer.

Stuff I like (a bit of a sales pitch)

Welcome to an edition of “Stuff I Like”, where I talk about products, people, services or shows that I like.

Down to Earth Natural Foods

This is a supplement store in Richmond Hill, where I’ll both send my clients who are in that area, and go myself to buy supplements. What do I like about them?

               Two main things:

  1. They’re not a big chain, so the owners are often manning the cash register themselves, and are extra helpful. You go to a big chain, and ask the customer service rep where a certain supplement is, and they’ll mutter under their breath and point you in the sort-of right direction, without ever making eye contact. You go to Down to Earth, and they’ll physically take you where the supplement is. No wasting time aimlessly wondering around, figuring out where your supplement is.
  2. They’ll ask questions to understand the reason you want that supplement, and may recommend a more effective alternative relative to what you were looking for. Even if the better alternative is lower-priced. Now that’s keeping the customer’s best interests at heart.

If you want to check them out, you can visit their site here.

James Alberto

James Alberto is my massage therapist. I go to him every month for my dose of goodness. I’ve had hundreds of massages and dozens of massage therapists in my life, and James Alberto stands out as the hands-down best, by a mile.

               What makes him so good?

  1. He listens. He asks me what he’d like me to work on, I tell him, and he does it. Seems fairly standard, but I’ve had a number of RMTs ask me that question, and proceed to ignore my request.
  2. He asks about the pressure quite frequently, which makes sense, because different muscles can handle different amounts of pressure. Once he gets to a new muscle, if I say the pressure isn’t enough, he gradually builds it up, and asks me to tell him to stop when he reaches the right level. You’re basically crafting your own customized, perfect massage.
  3. At the end or our first appointment, he asked me for feedback. I had none. This is about as close to a perfect massage as I’ve ever had.

James works both out of the Sutherland Chan clinic (on Leslie and Finch), as well as the Step Up clinic (on Yonge and King, in downtown Toronto).

Natrel High Protein Milk

One of the most common nutritional recommendations I make to my clients and readers is to eat more protein. Especially since I work with a lot of older folks. And older folks have greater requirements for protein than younger folks. The great irony is that despite the requirements being higher, the desire for it is lower.

Why do I recommend protein so frequently? Because it has tons of benefits:

  • Increases muscle
  • As I go into in my osteoporosis book, protein is the most powerful nutrient for bone-building(yes, more powerful than calcium and vitamin D. Surprised? Don’t be. I explain the rationale in my book – and back it up with lots of scientific evidence)
  • It’s good for the immune system

…and more.

Natrel high protein milk to the rescue. Unlike most brands of regular, 2% milk that only have 9 grams of protein per cup, Natrel’s High Protein Milk is 18 grams per cup. But the taste is no different.

So for folks who have a hard time getting enough protein in their diet, Natrel’s high protein milk is a great solution. I only saw it in grocery stores very recently, and have been recommending it frequently since then.

You eat oatmeal, and put milk in it? Add high protein milk. You eat breakfast cereal, and want to make it a little healthier? Use high protein milk. Very versatile.

09 – Losing patience with seniors

OK…so you’ve done it all. You took care of so many people, done so much for so many. Fine, so devote your time now to your own causes starting with YOU.

But, get up off your doff and do something. Volunteer. Get involved in the community. Join a book club. Become a community activist. Get involved.

There are so many people that just coast through the days, watching TV, sitting around. Nothing wrong with that in of itself but if that’s all you do given fairly good health, reasonable energy level and acceptable capabilities, then you’re missing the boat or your boat is sinking.

You might as well leave this site because I am not supportive or a proponent of apathy, lethargy, and indifference.

November is Make a Will Month

November is Make a Will Month.
(according to Zoomer mag and CARP)

Do you have a will? The majority of adults do not. When you have an attorney create a will, you decide how your assets will be dispersed. Funeral planning is widely considered an important extension of will preparation and estate planning. Pre-arranging your funeral or cremation service is a decision only you can make. But it’s a choice that will affect your most loved ones and those who love you most.

By planning ahead, you save your loved ones time and money.

Having your will and funeral plans complete spares your loved ones the stress of making these decisions under the pressure of time and strong emotions. When you plan ahead, you get to carefully consider your options and make choices that ensure that your life is remembered and celebrated the way that you want—but you also lock in today’s prices and protect your family from worrying about money.

Having a will, prepaid funeral plans and an estate organizer relieves your family of financial and emotional burdens.

08 – Aging with an Attitude

Be pragmatic, be realistic…aging is the pits. It’s a constant battle, you against the debilitation and deterioration as your body crumbles away its molecular structure with aging. It’s a constant battle, you against age. You can slow the battle with good nutrition, good living, moderation everywhere, exercise and common sense well-being processes, but it is a losing battle. Should you whine about it? Lament it?  If you want. Won’t matter. The process will continue. But you can make the battle one where you fight with dignity, with motivation, with determination that will gain your tiny victories. You can slow the process and think positively while in the struggle. Your mental attitude may be more important than the physical one. Think positively, think optimistically, think well, and you will slow the defeats. Hang around younger people, even if they are just younger in attitude, and you will grip your sword more firmly. Be aware of how you live, daily, emotionally, physically, and nutritionally and again the sword will be held with a stronger grip. It’s a battle, but it’s one where you can go down fighting, or you can go down crying. You choose. The white flag isn’t in my scabbard yet.

PICKERING: How to piss off VOTERS and decrease VOTER TURNOUT

Here’s a strategy that is guaranteed to increase voter turnout, but no political group would dare to use it.

Track whether a voter has voted. They could check off an identifier at the polling station or on the Ballot in some way and receive a confirmation number or even a QR code. Wherever asked if they voted, they would use the identifier code or the QR code to confirm that they voted. End of story.

Non-voters would not have any such code. When asked for such code, their failure to provide the necessary confirmation would disentitle them from the service for which the code was requested.

Hence, a food bank patron would have to provide a VOTER CONFIRMATION code to receive the service, a dog tag license applicant the same, or the same for any other service as provided by the city.

VOTERS vs NON-VOTERS
VOTERS would be approved for city services upon submission of the VOTER CODE.

A NON-VOTER would not be entitled to any service provided by the city.

Voting turnout would change very quickly if people realized that non-voting would cut them off from city services.

This a very practical strategy which undoubtedly will get a tremendous rejection from people crying over personal rights, rights which have been gained via democratically elected governments.

[Thank you E.G. for the political discussion and suggestion but it will never fly.]

EDITORIAL: PICKERING COUNCIL, PROMISING POTENTIAL

Pickering’s new municipal council has finally reached a more equitable and representative reflection of the electorate.

With the physical change, we can only hope the anima of the council has changed also. We needed fresh blood. We needed new energy. We needed change. We got it: 6 men, 4 women; 10% Black. Now let’s watch the action.

Pickering has numerous issues which need addressing and this new council has the opportunity of improving the municipality. Hate and racist incidents are too prevalent in our city. Poverty is a serious concern poorly addressed in the past. Homeless issues still continue. Financial concerns bother almost every resident.

Perhaps the new councilors will bring innovative and dynamic energies to the council. Hopefully, the veteran councilors will bring experience and wisdom rather than intransigence and inertia.

Ashe, Brenner, Butt, Pickles, and Trustee McCafferty carry the onus of age, incumbency, and experience. Cook, Cunningham, Linton, Nagy, and Robinson represent the freshness and hope of new energy, new ideas, and new solutions.

It’s really a golden opportunity for Pickering to move forward.

Maclean’s editor, Sarah Fulford, introduces the CRISIS story

Canada’s ER crisis

It’s painful to talk about the collapse of the Canadian healthcare system. Excellent universal health care that treats every citizen equally is a source of great national pride. One of the reasons I love being Canadian is because I know that a new immigrant with few resources is entitled to the same medical treatment as a multi-millionaire whose family has been in Canada for generations. Whenever I hear about the exorbitant out-of-pocket costs that my American friends pay for medical expenses, I feel a little smug.

So, I admit, I’ve been slow to accept that our system is crumbling. We’re supposed to be good at this. Canada doesn’t make the best movies, or launch the biggest multinational corporations, or win the most Olympic medals, but we do universal health care well. Right?

A few years ago, when boomers started to complain about their long wait times for knee and hip replacements, I figured that there was a backlog, a wrinkle in the system, and it would get ironed out. But it didn’t. Then “hallway health care” became a common phrase. I heard from friends and family members who were being parked in crowded emergency-room corridors for hours. Now emergency departments nationwide are temporarily closing because they don’t have enough staff to care for patients. It’s no longer possible to pretend this is just a little hiccup.

In Ontario, where I live, emergency departments have been temporarily closing since the summer. These ERs are mostly in rural areas, but some smaller cities have been hit too. In the fall, the Toronto Star published a story reporting that emergency departments in Ontario have shut down at least 86 times since July. Some closed overnight, while other shutdowns lasted weeks. Patients were diverted to other hospitals, many kilometres away.

Alan Drummond is an emergency care physician at Great War Memorial hospital, located an hour southwest of Ottawa in Perth, Ontario. He’s been practising for 39 years and he’s seen a lot. Last summer, he watched in despair as his hospital’s ER was forced to close for over three weeks.

Drummond has reached an age where he feels comfortable speaking his mind. He isn’t concerned about optics or pleasing hospital administrators. He loves medicine and he’s troubled by the current crisis. He wants you to know how bad things are. On Twitter, and in TV interviews, he’s frank about what’s happening in hospitals across the province. When editors at Maclean’s asked him to write about his experience, he eagerly accepted the opportunity.

His story is a passionate cri de coeur that sometimes reads like a horror novel. It’s also hugely informative. Drummond is deep in the trenches of emergency care, but he also has a sophisticated, bird’s-eye view of the systemic failures that have led to this moment in Canadian history.

Listening to his voice, and to voices like his, is the first step in fixing our problems—and, I hope, restoring pride in our national healthcare system.

Readers Write
Well….we didn’t get anything from ‘Crusty’ (not his real name) here at “F/N”HQ this week but several others stepped up to fill his ‘vacancy’, so we’ll offer you the following: Firstly, ”F/N” congrats’ are duly in order for this first item!! Check it/them out: *I’ve been ‘sober’ now for 43 days!! Not in a row or anything, just in total. **(on loyalty and stuff) Never piss off a Canadian. We will roll you in a vat of ‘le sirop d’erable’ (maple syrup), drop you into a barrel of seasoned bread crumbs, then throw you into the midst of a flock of angry geese….Canada Geese of course….it wouldn’t be pretty….and all without spilling a drop of our beer!! ***Did I hear this right? CTV National News strongly indicated late last week that Canada will be sending soldiers to Haiti to help police forces there in controlling/eliminating gang warfare, which is quite out of control these days. The number of Cdn. military to be deployed was not released. Meanwhile, in Moscow, as Putin’s bombing attacks on Ukraine’s civilians and infrastructure reaches new levels, Junior Trudeau will be ‘increasing Canadian sanctions’ on Russia. (*note….Rotzy caught that too, and when you have the ‘military might’ Canada has (or not) it’s best to ‘pick your fights’….or avoid combat completely and go with ‘sanctions’. Just sayin’)

W.E.H.T….. Week #2
We received some good responses to last week’s ‘What Ever Happened To’? debut as well as a few ‘new’ WEHT’s….but Rotzy wants MORE, so get onto it, OK? Anyway, as to ‘replies’, one reader asks ”No idea where the money went….but who or what is Bo Diddley”? C’mon man!! He is/was Ellas McDaniels and I’d bet Leonard Chess got a good chunk of his dough. I’d also wager this reader knows not ‘W E H T McKinley Morganfield’ either? And that’s too bad as they’re both blues and R&B giants. Legends! Another reader responded to my ‘WEHT senator Mike ‘Beluga Head’ Duffy’ with a question….’Who the **** cares”?!! Well, he’s got a point there, eh? Perhaps ‘B/H’ re-joined his ‘pod’ and they are in The Bay of Fundy, swimming back to wherever it is Belugas go to live out their days. And nights. As long as he stays away from Ottawa and The Red Chamber! Anyway….here’s a few more: ”W E H T The Littlest Hobo? One of young Rotzy’s favourite TV shows!! BYAM (between you and me) I’d take Hobo over Lassie any day….IF he wasn’t so prone to disappearing completely at the end of the show. EVERY week!! W E H T George Cleveland? W E H T Tiny Tim? No, No, No….not Tim, the ‘youngest of the Cratchit children’, I mean the ‘Tip-Toe-Through-The-Tulips Tim’. W E H T Emmet Kelly? (*clue: The Bums’ #1 Bum). WEHT John Barrisford Tipton? (*clue: he had a lot of money). And lastly, there are/were two musical questions: ”W E H T Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans”?….and….”W E H T Ernie K. Doe”? Good luck folks, and we’d like to hear from you!

Petitions And Stuff
I answered the knock on the door to unit #303 last Wed at about 6:30PM (with a bulging mouthful of fried breaded Tilapia fillet) to a couple friends/neighbours from here at 555 Harris Place, and whilst Rotzy was trying to get rid of it quickly….the bulging mouthful….I noticed the lady holding a clipboard with a bunch of names scrawled on 11”x18” sheets and knew immediately what they wanted….’twas a petition to have the doors from the elevator lobbies to the hallways ‘electrified’ on floors 2 to 7. Currently the 1st Floor is the ONLY one with the power door! and it seems pretty much common knowledge to residents it was ‘converted’ a couple or three years ago to become a ‘sales tool’ when giving potential renters a tour of the building. The ‘petition’ has been a rumour for a while but some ‘rebels’ had a meeting and here they were! Yours truly swallowed my Tilapia, without requiring the Heimlick manouver, signed my name, ‘forged’ Miz.Jo’s, and congratulated them both on their ‘efforts’. I ran into the guy early next ayem and he said they gathered FIVE PAGES of signatures! covering a lot of apartments and it’s been sent off to the Manager of Properties….methinks we want a reply on it ASAP, if it’s not too much trouble. Know what I’m sayin? I said….well, I THINK I said….this issue is NOT new, 5-6 years for the ‘day-oners’, and counting. Yet it’s always been shelved/put off and cetera….’TOO EXPENSIVE’ is a popular reply. Well, they just got a nice rent increase from all of us. Look! These doors are ‘fire doors’….surely required by law….and weigh a tonne, or close to it….they’re a ‘handful’ even for a healthy, younger person. BUT…75% of the people in #555 are oldsters; many on canes, a couple dozen on walkers, half a dozen or more ‘fully wheelchaired’….hence, if #555 Harris Place really IS a ‘high-end’ apartment building….and one of Skyline Living’s ‘flagship properties’!….it says here they best start achieving that title!! Lotsa ‘stories’ about 335 and 575, also part of this Skyline compound. DO they have power doors or DON’T they?? Hey! I don’t live there/don’t know/don’t really care! Miz. Jo and Rotzy live at #555. In #303. Did I mention that? Stay tuned!

When The Blue Jays….
….self-destructed on the ‘World Series launching pad’ (vs the Rays) a month or so back, it meant no more Buck Martinez and Pat Tabler until next April and we were swamped with a couple dozen ‘homer’ announcers, all favouring THEIR own teams,’ but all covering ‘The Great American Game’. Most of ’em are good/knowledgable baseball guys….albeit outright ‘homers’….but they were/are WRONG! About the game. It was NOT an ‘American’ invention….it was before anybody knew of Abner Doubleday, and years prior to Mr. and Mrs. Ruth naming their pudgy, newborn son George Herman, that the first game of Baseball was played. In Beachville, near Woodstock! Not Woodstock, New York….Woodstock, Ontario, CANADA! So take a bow, Jays fans….and if somebody asks you ”how’s your Jays doing”? Just ‘flip’ him/her your best ‘Blue Jay Birdie’! You pick YOUR W/Series fave yet? Better make haste….as of Sun 30th the Phillies won 1 and ditto for the Astros, Some facts: *Phillies….Born 1882/ 7 Pennants/ W/Series Winner 1980/2008. *Astros (Initially called Colt .45’s) Born 1962/ W/Series Wins 1 2020. Famous for the Houston Astrodome. I’m going for Philly….Rotzy was a Robin Roberts fan….the big ‘side-armer’ from back in the early/mid 1950’s….and they have really good uniforms! As to the Jays….wait ’til NEXT year!!

*Thought Of The Day…I don’t know how to act my age. I have never been there before.

CONCLAVE, Robert Harris

Conclave
Robert Harris

An excellent read. Definitely among the top 5 I have ever read.

__________________

Synopsis
Robert Harris’ Conclave immerses readers in the clandestine and high-stakes world of a papal election. When Pope Pius XIII, a polarizing reformist, dies suddenly, the College of Cardinals convenes in Vatican City to elect his successor. The novel centers on Cardinal Jacopo Lomeli, the aging Dean of the College, tasked with overseeing the conclave. A man of deep faith, Lomeli grapples with personal doubts and the weight of ensuring a divinely guided choice amidst escalating rivalries.

The conclave, sequestered within the Sistine Chapel, unfolds with meticulous ritual—secret ballots, burned votes, and the timeless chant of fumata bianca. Yet beneath the solemnity simmers intense politicking. Key contenders emerge: Cardinal Joseph Tremblay, a savvy Canadian populist; Cardinal Joshua Adeyemi, a charismatic Nigerian critic of Western materialism; and Cardinal Angelo Bellini, an Italian intellectual favored by reformers. Harris intricately layers their ambitions, vulnerabilities, and secrets, exposing clashes between tradition and progress, humility and ambition.

Complicating matters is Cardinal Vincent Benítez, a reclusive Filipino archbishop whose unexpected inclusion as a cardinal-elector, made cardinal secretly by the recent pope—sparks tension. Meanwhile, Lomeli uncovers discrepancies in the late Pope’s administrative actions, hinting at hidden agendas and financial corruption. External pressures mount, including media scrutiny and global crises, testing the cardinals’ resolve.

As voting cycles through deadlocks, allegiances shift, and scandals emerge, Lomeli confronts ethical quagmires, balancing his duty to the Church with the moral complexities of the candidates.

Harris masterfully blends historical detail with fiction, crafting a taut narrative rich in suspense and moral introspection. The conclave’s outcome hinges on a profound revelation that challenges notions of divine will and human frailty, culminating in an unexpected twist that redefines the future of the Church.

Conclave is a riveting exploration of power, faith, and integrity, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into one of the world’s most secretive processes. Through Lomeli’s journey, Harris interrogates the interplay between spirituality and institutional politics, leaving readers to ponder where true leadership lies—in tradition, reform, or an unanticipated path.

Richard says
Conclave, arguably may dislodge Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code as the best book of all time, the Bible exempted.

It is important to remember these books, as realistic as they sound, are works of fiction, and this is very important in order to accept Harris’ very climactic finish.

The Conclave is a very polished, engaging, and edifying book that takes the reader behind the secret process of a papal election in words, location, and fictional clerics of the Catholic church’s uppermost hierarchy.

The strength of the book comes from the unrelenting suspense that Harris develops, suspense based on the machinations that accompany the papal electoral process, the personal ambitions, the personable foibles and the egos of the fictional characters. As much as we believe that the senior clerics of the Church would be humble and unselfish, they are human and, as such, may sometimes give into temptation becoming as self-centered and self-concerned as any other person. They may be as greedy and acquisitive in their financial avarice as depicted. In their lives, they may be as lustful and yielding to the temptations of the flesh as the next person. In the fictional electoral process of electing a pope, they may be as unbridled in their political scheming as any politician. Machiavellian even.

Harris develops the suspense relentlessly, using the balloting process. Each vote changes the dynamics of the suspense. First, simple vanity seems to come to the fore. Then, the desire for power and control. Then, the characters expressed anger and envy to garner more votes.

Cardinal Lomeli, Dean of the Cardinal Congregation, is Harris’ primary tool for analyzing and examining the thinking prevalent during the electoral narrative. The reader hears his thoughts or hears the thinking of others through his conversations. Tension builds with the display of the results of each ballot. Harris relentlessly increases the tension and suspense  with each vote.

There are several subplots throughout the book, each increasing the tension. Who will be the next pope? Lomeli is the prime contender but he fully rejects the idea from the beginning , campaigning vociferously against such an outcome. Eventually, he “puts himself in God’s Hands” ready to accept the outcome whatever it may be.

The plot twists and turn: terrorist acts, a clandestine break-in into the deceased pope’s chambers, the discovery of hidden documentation relating to clerical corruption and dishonesty. Like breadcrumbs, Harris drops barely noticeable hints at his astounding climax all along the way, and Lomeli ceaselessly prods readers into pausing and reconsidering the actions, incidents, and events.

The book’s climax is so surprising and shocking that most readers will pause to consider the revelation.

Some final thoughts
The greatest strengths of Harris’ book are based on several factors: the surnames of the Cardinals, fictional but very appropriate; the scenes in which the action unfolds are based on the actual visits to the Vatican; the prayers invoked by Lomeli sound religious and authentic; the events that occur sound plausible and believable. Harris bases his story on reality as much as possible. He received special permission to visit Vatican locations and access to exclusive interviews which provide insights into life in the Vatican.

Conclave is an excellent read, a story of continuously developed suspense and tension. It is definitely a book that should entertain and satisfy most readers greatly.

EDITORIAL: DEMOCRACY and VOTING

Democratic governments are founded on the premise that those who govern are beholden to the will of the governed. They do not automatically produce more noble or enlightened leaders than other forms of government. They elect human beings with their inherent frailties, biases, and failings. A democracy offers society a corrective. When leaders fail to serve the needs of the populace, there is a mechanism for replacing them. It’s called elections.                                                            Dan Rather

Elections are the bedrock of democracies, voters their maintenance force. Voters build the foundation and maintain it with periodic and regular corrective maintenance. Without elections, the corrective upkeep, democracies would fail because they are led by human beings.

Democracies are revived, thrive, and survive because of voters, the group who determine who is to govern and regularly designate who will receive the legitimacy and right to power.

Every constituency had numerous excellent candidates. It is unfortunate each office has but one office holder.

If you voted
Regardless if your candidate won or lost, you are to be commended for voting and giving your support to that candidate. You are a winner in the election.

Voting is the foundation for every government and if you voted, you played a vital role in that government. You chose who is to sit in political office. You played a key role and are appreciated for doing so.

If you did not vote
If you did not vote, why didn’t you? There may be many reasons for this. The voting procedure as organized by the city made voting easy, accessible, and convenient. You could vote from your kitchen or if you preferred the old-fashioned way of voting, ballot stations were open in many locations.

There is no excuse for not voting. Not voting shows how little a non-voter cares about the government which affects them directly, every day. Non-voters demonstrate disrespect and disdain for a privilege held by a minority of people in the world.

Non-voters…a shame!

06 – A comment from another aging person; she’s not a happy camper about aging

Yes, aging is really that bad! I guess for some they are happy about aging eat right, exercise blah blah blah. Well I have eaten right walk 5 miles a day and took and still take very good care of my self. That sure as hell has not made the aging process at all good! This process is not for anyone who is a sissy! Its tough, and yes it sucks! I don’t know anyone else who ages gracefully! How gracefully can you be when your wrinkles are in places they shouldn’t be, everything seems like it shifts on your body. If you do look in the mirror it’s like wait who are you? Gray hair keeps coming, age spots, they are multiplying! Aches and pains have a mind of their own I mean it takes me 10 minutes to get out of bed. I actually (true story) sneezed when I was on the toilet and needed help to get off because I threw my back out. In my mind I feel 30 but my body thinks I am an idiot! It is all a process we never think about when we are younger. It didn’t hit me that I was getting old until 59. I am just starting out my aging process and I wish I could skip it. But it’s part of life. I sure as hell do not have to like it. Everyone ages differently and has their own attitude. I like to make fun out of my aging process, that’s about all I can do is to laugh about it!

Silent Signs of Dementia (and How to Spot Them Early)

Source: Mark Witten, Reader’s Digest Canada

From sudden personality changes to poor financial decision-making, here are the 13 early signs of dementia you should never ignore.

Stephen Chow knew something was off when he started making more typos and spelling errors in his work emails. This was in 2010, and Chow, 51 at the time and living in Scarborough, was an IT specialist for Ontario’s Ministry of Government and Consumer Services.

He tried to ignore the mistakes at first, but the situation became more obvious when attempts to punch in his password kept failing. He found it gradually harder to focus and perform simple, familiar tasks, such as calculating numbers or putting his signature on a document. “Everything was all messed up, and I didn’t know what to do about it,” he says. Not wanting his wife, Eva, and two adult sons to worry, he kept it a secret from them, hoping he could just muddle through.

Instead, over the next several years, more alarming symptoms appeared. As Chow made the daily 90-minute drive to and from work, he had trouble seeing the centre line on the road, as well as the cars beside him. In early 2014, his patchy vision almost killed him when he couldn’t clearly discern the road’s edge and slid into the ditch during a snowstorm. He was unharmed, but his anxiety mounted, and he decided to talk to his family doctor.

When Chow described his difficulties with typing and driving—both related to motor skills—his physician initially referred him to a specialist in Parkinson’s disease. That condition was ruled out because he didn’t have hand or leg tremors. In May of 2014, Chow got an appointment with Dr. Carmela Tartaglia, a cognitive neurologist specializing in early-onset dementia at Toronto Western Hospital.

Tartaglia suspected Chow’s symptoms were visual-spatial processing problems, a warning sign of Alzheimer’s disease—and she noted one subtle but telltale clue. “Stephen’s writing difficulties became more apparent in Cantonese,” she says. “It’s his first language, and Cantonese is a more visual language than English.”

Weeks later, an MRI showed a shrinkage of cortical tissue in the back of his brain—the region involved in processing what and how we see—and biomarkers identified in his cerebrospinal fluid 18 months later finally confirmed, six years after Chow first noticed his symptoms, that he had early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Why the detection of early dementia symptoms is important

Chow is one of about 700,000 Canadians living with dementia. Although the rate of people who develop dementia has been declining for decades due to healthier lifestyles, the total number is still projected to double over the next 15 years because of the aging population. Each year, more than 75,000 Canadians are diagnosed with some form of dementia. Around 10 per cent are under the age of 65.

Detection of early dementia symptoms is important so that the person diagnosed, and their family members, can take steps to slow and mitigate the effects of the disease through lifestyle changes. Ideally, that would mean seeing a family doctor, undergoing specialized testing and receiving a formal diagnosis within six months or a year after noticing symptoms. But according to an Australian study, on average, it took two years for people to make an initial visit to a doctor and over three years for a firm diagnosis.

People often associate dementia with memory loss
People often associate dementia with memory loss, but in many cases, this is not the first sign. In fact, dementia can affect many different areas of the brain, and scientists now understand that symptoms differ based on where in the brain changes occur. With this knowledge, doctors now use advanced tools, such as brain scans and protein biomarkers, to make earlier, more specific dementia diagnoses.

But getting to that stage requires noticing that something is wrong—and letting somebody know.

“The first time I knew Steve had a problem was when he called me from Dr. Tartaglia’s office,” says Eva. Once the diagnosis was made, she realized there had been indications. She just wasn’t aware of what to look for.

Here are 13 early dementia symptoms that suggest you should be assessed.

  1. Your personality changes

Inappropriate behaviour is an early symptom of damage to the brain’s frontal lobes, which regulate our social judgment.

“People with this dysfunction might undress in public, talk about people’s private parts or say ‘That person is stupid,’” explains Dr. Robin Hsiung, neurologist and associate professor at the UBC Hospital Clinic for Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders. “They lose social graces and forget that what they’re saying or doing isn’t right.”

These symptoms are often seen in frontotemporal dementia (FTD), but also when Alzheimer’s or vascular dementia affect the frontal lobes. If they’re not recognized, they can be particularly unsettling.

“The worst symptoms for families to deal with are when there is a personality shift and the person becomes increasingly agitated or even paranoid and suspicious,” says Carrie Bourassa, a professor at the University of Saskatchewan’s college of medicine who specializes in dementia and aging in Indigenous populations.

Unusual behaviour can sometimes be confused with psychiatric conditions, such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, and brain imaging can help rule out or support a diagnosis of dementia.

  1. You see things that aren’t there

Recurring visual hallucinations may be an early symptom of Lewy body or Parkinson’s disease dementia, although people with Alzheimer’s disease can experience them, too. These can be as simple as seeing flashing lights or as elaborate as encountering animals and people that aren’t real.

“Sometimes the hallucinations are quite frightening, like seeing a wolf or a bear trying to break through the window,” says Hsiung. “Other times they’re more positive, like a grandmother who looks out the window and sees her grandchildren playing in the playground, but no one is there.”

Researchers believe that visual hallucinations may be caused by damage to the brain’s visual-processing system, in combination with the disease’s disruption of the sleep cycle—so that the visions might actually be dreams breaking into waking consciousness.

  1. You struggle with vocabulary

Word-finding difficulties are among the most common early dementia symptoms. You might have trouble finding the right words during conversations or when naming objects, sometimes substituting the wrong word. People affected in this way pause while speaking, use filler words and frequently rely on “it” or “they” instead of specific names for things. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that these word-finding problems increased significantly in the span of just two years for people developing dementia.

Language can, in fact, be affected before memory problems emerge. An Arizona State University study analyzed former U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s press conferences and found speech changes more than a decade before he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

To assess whether your word-finding challenges are related to a shrinkage in the language areas of your brain, pay attention to when and how often this happens. It could simply be a result of being tired or stressed—and can be caused by anxiety, depression, stroke and delirium, as well.

  1. Your vision is patchy

Problems with spatial awareness can be caused by cataracts or glaucoma, but they’re also one of the early dementia symptoms. This was the case with Chow, whose first Alzheimer’s symptoms were caused by a shrinkage of the area of the brain crucial to his ability to accurately perceive the world three-dimensionally.

“A patient with posterior cortical atrophy may see the world in a patchy visual field,” explains Hsiung. “If the person is focusing in front while driving, he can’t see things off to the side. And if he’s changing lanes, he can’t see other cars beside him.” Meanwhile, when Chow made mistakes typing, he was having trouble seeing the whole keyboard.

Tartaglia notes that visual-spatial processing problems are especially prevalent as an early sign of Lewy body dementia, which can affect a similar area of the brain.

  1. You find it difficult to keep focused

In addition to visual-spatial processing issues, Chow also had trouble with concentration due to shrinkage in his frontal lobe. “That made writing, reading, and driving difficult and affected his ability to do high-level tasks as an IT specialist,” says Tartaglia.

Beyond Alzheimer’s, any other kind of dementia can affect this area of the brain—but note that an inability to focus can also be caused by anxiety, depression and side effects to medication.

  1. You forget where you’ve put things

It’s not unusual to occasionally forget where you stashed your keys. But if you find that you’re doing this regularly, leaving the stove burner on or frequently forgetting recent events and conversations, this could be a warning sign. Commonly, says Hsiung, people with this type of memory loss will ask loved ones the same questions over and over again.

“Families can help a lot in recognizing these early symptoms, because if the person’s memory is poor, they won’t remember the problems they have in remembering,” he says.

This sign is one that often points to Alzheimer’s disease. In this type of dementia, the hippocampus—the brain area involved in forming, storing and retrieving memories—may be affected first. In fact, short-term memory loss is the most common symptom among people with Alzheimer’s disease, whereas it’s less often an early sign in vascular dementia and Lewy body dementia, and rarely in FTD.

Medications and depression can also affect memory, so it’s important to check with your doctor, who might recommend a screening test, such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment—30 questions which quickly identify abnormal brain function.

  1. You’re suddenly bad with money

A pattern of uncharacteristically poor financial decisions should set off alarm bells. “When you have frontal-lobe damage, you lose judgment and can make rash, impulsive financial decisions,” says Tartaglia. “A frugal person starts giving away more money or buying things they don’t need—like a furnace from a door-to-door salesperson.” She’s seen patients who did significant damage to their families’ finances, as well as CEOs of companies who lost millions because nobody noticed the signs.

A combination of declining decision-making skills and memory can also lead to financial lapses. A JAMA Internal Medicine study from 2020 found that people with dementia started missing bill payments up to six years before they were diagnosed.

  1. You’re emotionally flat

According to a University of Cambridge study, a lack of interest or motivation can predict the onset of dementia many years before other cognitive symptoms do, especially in people with FTD, who may be diagnosed as early as age 45.

Hsiung cautions, however, that apathy can sometimes be confused with depression, as the difference between them is subtle; a psychiatric assessment is often required to tell them apart.

“In both, a person may sit on the sofa all day long,” he says, explaining that the key difference is how much their mood ranges. If someone becomes tearful when they hear a sad story, this could be depression, but it’s apathy if the person shows no emotional response. If it’s the latter, Hsiung says, it could be the beginning of Alzheimer’s disease, FTD or vascular dementia.

  1. You’re not moving as well as usual

Difficulties with movement and performing physical activities in the right sequence can be an early sign of damage to the parietal lobe, which is related to motor skills—and this is one of the signs that Eva thinks she overlooked in her husband. Three years before his diagnosis, the couple began to participate in dragon-boat racing. Chow had always been a well-coordinated athlete and handyman, but during training he struggled to learn the basic stroke technique. “The coach kept telling him, ‘This is the way you do it.’ Steve didn’t get it very well, and he was upset with the coach,” says Eva.

Motor problems are also common with Lewy body dementia, but other neurodegenerative conditions, such as Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis, should be considered, as well.

  1. You’ve become insensitive

According to a 2016 Neuroscience Research Australia report, loss of empathy is a core symptom in some people diagnosed with FTD. It’s related to loss of grey matter in the social brain. These patients are unaware of the impact of their behaviour on others, and they lose both the ability to understand other people’s emotions and to share in their feelings.

“You may not care about your family anymore,” says Tartaglia. “Or a family member is crying, but you don’t recognize they are sad.”

  1. You no longer grasp concepts you once did

Problems with tasks that require abstract thinking, such as understanding numbers or reading a house plan—especially if that was a strength before—are an early dementia symptom that can be caused by damage in the frontal and parietal lobes. For Chow, this appeared early at work in his inability to make simple calculations, but it also impeded his long-held role as the manager of his family’s finances. After his diagnosis, Eva took over those duties.

  1. You’re more anxious

Mood changes, such as depression and anxiety, can be early dementia symptoms that start well before people begin to experience memory loss, according to a 2015 Neurology study. Tartaglia notes that, especially with Lewy body dementia, non-anxious people can become anxious much of the time. They may exhibit persistent worry, fear or agitation, commonly triggered by going outside the home or being separated from a family member.

  1. You get lost more often

Losing navigational skills, and the ability to create a mental map of your environment, can be one of the early dementia symptoms. In fact, in 2019, University of Cambridge researchers developed a virtual-reality navigation test that has proven to be better at identifying early Alzheimer’s disease than FDA-approved neuropsychological tests currently considered to be a gold standard for early diagnosis.

“We built a running track in our backyard so Steve could jog safely every day without getting lost,” says Eva.

Once Chow was properly diagnosed, his anxiety about his symptoms decreased and he became calmer. “Eva is the model caregiver because she wants to do what’s best for Stephen and encourages him to do things,” says Tartaglia. This has included joining Alzheimer Society of Toronto programs and support groups for people with early-onset dementia, practising daily meditation and getting regular aerobic exercise.

But perhaps most importantly, with Eva’s encouragement, Chow began to share his dementia diagnosis with the people in his life. “I felt better after I told my family and friends,” he says. “They were very supportive, and it took a load off my shoulders. I learned that you should tell people what you’re noticing sooner rather than later and not keep it to yourself.”

Types of dementia
Rather than one specific disease, dementia describes a group of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain. There are more than a dozen types of dementia, including rare conditions and others that may develop from other brain disorders, like Parkinson’s disease or Huntington’s disease.

The five most diagnosed forms of dementia:

  1. Alzheimer’s diseaseis the most common type of dementia, accounting for up to 80 per cent of all diagnoses. Generally, Alzheimer’s affects most areas of the brain as it progresses and can therefore involve changes in memory, language, problem solving, mood and behaviour.
  2. Vascular dementia, the second-most-common type, happens when there is a blockage to the brain’s blood supply, which causes brain cells to be deprived of oxygen and die. Strokes, transient ischemic attacks and blood-vessel disease are common causes of vascular dementia and can affect different brain areas.
  3. Lewy body dementiais caused by abnormal deposits of a protein called alpha-synuclein inside the brain’s nerve cells. This protein, which destroys brain cells, is also found in people with Parkinson’s disease. Areas of the brain involved in thinking, movement and visual processing are most affected.
  4. Frontotemporal dementiamainly affects the frontal and temporal brain areas and accounts for about 20 per cent of cases of early-onset dementia. Changes in personality and behaviour are more apparent in the early stage, while memory decline often doesn’t occur until later.
  5. Mixed dementiaoccurs when a person has at least two different types of dementia, most often Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Studies reveal it’s much more common than previously thought.

04 – You can’t beat old age, but you can fight it!

5 suggestions that might help you cope with aging better.

  1. Act young
Many people after 50 start acting old. They grow sedentary and weak. Soon they can’t participate in the activities they enjoyed when young. Then they sort of spiral into old age. Instead, stay physically active. Exercise, play sports, hike, ride a bike. Keep doing the things you loved to do when young and fight old age passionately.
  2. Think young
Many people after 50 start thinking old. They think of themselves as old and the things they used to enjoy when young. They sort of give themselves an excuse for checking out their younger life. Instead, never think of yourself as old. Think of yourself in the way you did when you were younger. You’re still capable. You can still do a lot. So…just keep doing it!
  3. Talk young
Many people after 50 talk old. They talk about being old, things they regret, maladies, aches and pains. Quit whining. Get back on the horse and ride, ride, ride. Ride until you can’t anymore. Refuse to grow old easily.
  4. Relate young. Many people after 50 only hang out with other old people. Together they share the misery of growing old and the regrets of missing youth. Instead, share life with older friends but the ones who talk and act young like you. Make new friends with younger people that rejuvenate you. And refuse to grow old.
  5. Believe young
Many people after 50 sort of give up and give in to growing old. They believe they have no choice but to have bad health and faded memories of better times. And they fulfill their expectations. Instead, start believing these are good days too. You can still do things, many things. You’re not finished yet. So don’t act like it’s over. It isn’t!

The best way to stay young is to fight old age with all your might!

03 – Why do I keep waking up at 4am?

You are one of those who have a biphasic sleep pattern. Basically, this means that you sleep around four hours, wake, then sleep again.

There is a substantial body of scientific opinion that this is in fact the natural human sleep pattern. If you research it, one of the things you will find is that in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, it was so widely accepted in Europe that in cities such as Paris and London, shops and tea houses would open for business for a couple of hours during the night. People would get up, dress, and go out for a walk and to meet others, then go back to bed.
When I reached my sixties, I found my monophasic sleep pattern turning into biphasic. When I wake between three and four a.m., I don’t dress, but I get up, make myself a hot drink, perhaps look at the news channels, or go out into the garden in mild weather. After about 45 minutes, I go back to bed and sleep well for the rest of the night.

01 – DEMENTED vs DEMENTIA

Old age sucks. This is a new category that will explore and write about old age. Likely, every post here will be a criticism or a lamentation of some aspect of old age. So, the category is not for the faint-hearted or those who are thin-skinned. Such people should steer clear of the category. Continue reading

Oct 17 – Technology ain’t what it used to be.

Rotzy’s busy criticizing technological innovations at his condo…they arrive at a cave man’s pace when they do arrive. And you should read about NFL Tom Brady’s latest fumble.

Surveys And Stuff
Miz. Jo and Rotzy kicked back recently to complete a survey (”takes 10 min”) that arrived on her i-pod from Skyline Living, our ‘keepers’ here at #555 Harris Place, along with 335 and 575….a “How Are We Doing”?/”How Do You Like Us Now”? thing.(*see below) You know, building maintenance/cleanliness/lawns and landscaping….overall as well as individual units. Well, it wasn’t until I returned from my ‘buckboard run’ that I touched my ‘fob’ to the activator, then pushed the square ‘PUSH’ button to enter the Lobby. Well….it opened! The door. First try! And I said (to myself) ”Holy s–t Toad! It opened! The electric door opened! With just ONE push on the button”! To which the little olde lady on the inside (waiting to come out) advised ”They put a new opener on it yesterday.” ”Well Toad….I guess that means no more whacks, smacks, overhand rights, elbow smashes and cetera just to ‘gain entry’. Imagine Toad, no more cursing/nervous breakdowns/head butts/karate kicks or toting a ballpeen hammer…(in truth, I never did quite carry out the last three, tho I was close to the hammer!!) Imagine.” The little, olde lady asked “Karate kicks? Who and where is Toad”? I smiled and said “Hey Toad, let’s let the lady get on her way, eh? Thank you M’am, and have a great day”! So….SO….getting back to the survey, in particular “How Are We Doing”? I expect Miz. Jo and yours truly coulda/shoulda been ‘singing Skyline praises’ for a job well done, right? Maybe. With an *asterisk* the size of a beach ball accompanying it seeing as the door buzzer hadn’t worked properly for somewhere twixt 6 months and a year! ” “How Are We Doing”? Nice repair job Skyline….but your ‘response tyming’ really sucks!! Regardless of what we said in the survey. (*Rotzy does NOT use the term ‘sucks very often in this space. Sorry, but if the shoe fits….well, you know. Continue reading

EDITORIAL: REMEMBRANCE DAY

I never fought in a war, any war, though I have lived during war times. Actually, I cannot remember a time when our world did not have a war being fought somewhere.

I am fortunate I was never at the right age for enlistment, recruitment, or the draft to fight in a war.

However, I have benefitted from the battles so many others have fought. I live in a country with freedoms and constitutional guarantees for which others fought. Saying I am appreciative, seems mundane, maybe even bordering on patronage but I am sincere when I say I appreciate what those men and women did.

When I see wreaths laid at cenotaphs or hear ‘Taps’ played at Remembrance Day ceremonies, I am moved, sometimes very near to tears. I think about all those veterans who sacrificed their lives so that we could live the way we do. They gave so much. What can I do?

At 11 am, that day, I will stand wherever I am, nod my head and pause a moment to remember. There is nothing else I can do actually. I cannot console the families who lost loved ones in wars. I don’t know them. I cannot visit a cemetery to pay homage to a vet lying there. Veterans are not usually identified that way on their tombstones.

However, I can do the next best thing, in my eyes. Buy a poppy.

Poppies remind me of all the veterans, those killed, those passed, and those who still live with us. Each of them has sacrificed on my behalf. I can only imagine the sacrifice endured by the vets who are still with us. Undoubtedly, many, if not every one of them suffers from their combat experience. Some form of PTSD, some lasting effect from that military experience. So, I buy and wear poppies.

I buy more than one poppy. I tend to lose them in the house, in the car, or even as I give mine away. I am not bothered by added donations for replacement poppies. I like to think that each donation is a small token of appreciation to the veterans whom we are remembering and honouring.

Thank you soldier!

Report on the Pickering Waterfront…

Pickering’s Waterfront Parking Permit Program Open for Public Feedback

Pickering, ON, October 12, 2022 – The City has concluded the first year of its Waterfront Parking Permit Program and invites residents, businesses, and visitors to participate in an end-of-season review.

Public input and lessons learned will help assess the effectiveness of the program, and assist staff in preparing recommendations for improvements in 2023. Staff will report findings and recommendations to Council prior to the start of next year’s program.

The City of Pickering first launched the program in May, 2022 in an effort to mitigate parking issues at its popular waterfront destinations, as they continue to welcome visitors from throughout the region, and beyond.

Extensive community engagement and staff recommendations helped shape the development of the new program, which was approved by Council in November 2021 (Report to Executive Committee BYL 02-21).

The program included paid permit parking at all City waterfront parking lots, as well as prohibited parking on one side of waterfront-area streets, and mandated on-street permit parking for the opposite side of waterfront-area streets, effective May 1st to October 1, 2022.

Pickering residents were eligible to receive a no-charge permit to park at waterfront parking lots or where on-street parking is allowed. Free parking was also provided to accessible parking permit holders and vehicles bearing veterans’ licence plates.

View affected waterfront areas, rates, permit registration instructions, FAQ, and other program details at pickering.ca/WaterfrontParking.

Visit LetsTalkPickering.ca/WaterfrontParking to participate in the review process. The survey closes on November 30th, 2022.

As the gateway to the east GTA, Pickering (population 99,200) is strategically located where Toronto, York and Durham Regions meet. An award-winning municipality, Pickering is slated for significant economic and residential growth; offering an unparalleled quality of life for those who live, work, and play here. Its dynamic City Centre has been designated by the Province of Ontario as both an Urban Growth Centre and Mobility Hub, and continues to evolve as a preferred destination for creative learning, memorable events, and unique experiences at the heart of a vibrant, connected, and engaged community.

Possibly oversimplifying Arnold’s message

At the risk of oversimplifying, Schwarzenegger’s message falls on deaf ears.

We don’t give a damn about the truth, justice, or humanitarianism. As long as we aren’t affected, we’ll continue to do nothing, say less, and remain immobile.

The United Nations is a farce. It was created to prevent wars.

One time, the United States was the police force of the world acting as its peacekeeper. Today that nation cannot even keep peace within its own borders.

Oct 3 – A Chinese dinner of topics from health to car part thieves in his condo area to Putin and Canadian sanctions…and a food review to boot.

To Err Is Human….

….but on this baby Rotzy wasn’t even close! I make reference to the item in last week’s “F/N” column about the catalytic convertor that went missing from the black Honda (*see below) down at the far end of our 555 Harris Place parking lot, and how I’d spoken with the upset owner only an hour or so after the fact…informing him he was the 6th or perhaps the 7th victim in about 3 years. However, a conversation with an unnamed/reliable source who informed the “F/N” Crime Investigation Dept that there had been TWO MORE stolen in the same tyme frame! Goodness me!! Seems the ‘Cat/Con Burglar’ had a busy night! By the bye, the black Honda sits in the outer row right next to a tree-filled clotch/gulch….the second victim not far from it, also in an outer row. The burglar scored his/her ‘hat-trick’ from a vehicle over on the south side (the FRONT) of our ‘sister building’ 536 Dunsdon. So it matters not a damn WHERE his/her target sits….in a somewhat ‘out of the way spot’ or adjacent to a main artery/right under the lights/near the entrance! And ‘right under our noses’! He/she also knows in advance where/what his/her target(s) will be when he/she arrives….no guesswork or ‘eenie-meenie-mynie-moe.’

Courtesy of someone strolling around the lot(s) mid-afternoon….taking pictures with a fone, showing the parking spot #, the rear of the vehicle and the license plate. The ‘caser of the joint’ if you will. Actually yours truly and two friends (also tenants) busted one of these set-up guys last summer (almost), but he took off! Wisely for him, as one of our trio has a Black Belt….and last we saw of the ‘camera guy’ he was ‘going south’ on Park Road North. Anyway, it appears the cat. convertor count here in Skyline’s 3-building compound is now ‘sitting at NINE’. Betting? Don’t put too much on it ‘staying at NINE’! By the bye, whilst getting new brakes installed ‘all around’ on Edna The SUV at Midas*tm yesterday I axed the boss lady about stolen Cat-Cons and she said ‘they sell ’em to wreckers’, who then sell them as ‘used parts’ to ‘unsuspecting customers’. I’m guessing not ALL of those ‘wreckers’ are ‘Members in Good Standing of the BBB….Better Business Bureau. So….SO….for starters, keep your eyes open for ‘parking lot shutterbugs’ strolling around mid-afternoon and report it to your ‘building super’. By the bye, I’m wondering if the thief realized the cat/con he/she just removed from the black Honda was/is SIXTEEN years old?!

‘Twas Back In May 2021…

….when yours truly started into my weekly/twice-weekly/sometymes thrice-weekly visits to the V.O.N. down on Grey St. here in Brant’s Ford. Initially, after a couple ‘heart issues’ for Rotzy, it was to treat fluid build-up/retention in my lower legs and fluid drainage via ulcers. Leg ulcers. Bandaids, bandages, gauze patches, compression sox….and cetera. Also treatment of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions and the likes to my hands/arms,,,,caused by passing out/fall-down-go-booms….caused by low B/P. Anyhow, I’m all done….Friday at 7:20 AM Nurse Ashleigh (not her real name) pronounced yours truly as ‘all healed up and good to go’! Cool. But hold off on the ”way to go Rotzy” stuff for a couple months if you don’t mind, OK? I’ve been ‘all done’ before….two or three tymes when the ulcers re-opened, and it’s back to Square ‘A’ all over again, with the family doctor’s referral, VON re-assessment, you-name-it. A ‘pain in the ass’ is a fine and fitting name. So….SO….a BIG ‘thumbs up’ and ‘Thank You’ to all at The V.O.N. And I’m hoping NOT to see you soon!

The Group Had Assembled….

….and waited patiently as a driver and helper had been dispatched to pick up the order….at a place called ‘Blessings’ ….’Chinese Food’ (*see below) Miz. Jo and Rotzy were told. Individual Dinners For One type fare with a dozen different plates to choose from. At ‘Blessings’…..’Chinese Food’! Not Kong’s….or Kwong’s….or King Kong’s….or Hong Kong’s. ‘Blessings’! The ‘group’ were/are mostly oldsters, had been told ‘it’s quite good’, and we’d already paid for our orders, which were $1- $1.50 more than Nanking and/or Beijing (I wonder how many of us had ‘tipped’ in the 20% range? LOL!) as we waited for our own Uber service to return. Well, it did. Return. One of the first things yours truly heard was a reference to ‘Japanese Food’, then Uber #1 replying ”well, that’s what they call it”, but by then Rotzy was devouring an egg roll. Tell you what….great egg roll; best-ever almond-chicken-gravy soo-guy; ‘cleanest’ chicken-fried rice (only add as much soy sauce as YOU want); then something scared me as I bit into what I thought to be a breaded shrimp….there was something INSIDE it! Une crevette!! A shrimp!!…plump and juicy….they were ALL like that. Plump and juicy. And I said (to myself) “What a novelty there, Toad! I don’t know why nobody ever tried ‘that shrimp thing’ before!?” The “F/N” Find Of The Week. Not sure where ‘Blessings’ is located on King George Road, tho I’ll find it whilst on today’s buckboard run, also find out whether it’s Chinese or Japanese….but who cares?….and grab a menu. The best part is that the servings are big enough there was enough left over on Miz. Jo’s AND Rotzy’s plates it’ll be another ‘Blessings Nite’. MMmmm! *I learned ‘Blessings’ has a VERY extensive menu that includes, among other choices, Chinese AND Japanese dishes. A 4 1/2 Star rating!!

Nobody Was Listening….

….to Comrade Putin last Fri when he announced Russia is going to ‘annex’ several key areas within The Ukraine, bring them back under Russian control….”where they belong” he somewhat confidently added. Wrong. Not gonna happen. And outside the four walls where the Commie Party faithful had gathered to kiss the boss’s butt and hear his ‘motivational’ words, the western world and other countries of ‘free societies’ ignored Vlad completely, tho a few had a few words of caution for the #1 Commie. Then, Ukraine’s President Szelenski tells one and all they will join NATO immediately! Denmark then kicks up their Black Sea area Air Force operations several notches, which Rotzy figured to be like ‘rolling out the NATO ‘welcome mat’. Putin is up to his sorry ass in alligators! Increasingly of late, HE is losing HIS war….mucking (I can say ‘mucking’, right?) with the wrong guy….the wrong people. As long as he doesn’t go near the panel with the buttons on it! One thing I don’t get….Justin Trudeau, giving it his best ‘hard-ass/tough guy’ impression, keeps on coming up with ‘Canadian SANCTIONS on Russia’ every tyme Putin says or does something offensive to The Ukraine! WTF??!! As if Canada could shut Russia down economically! C’mon, J/T!! Eight &%$#@ months into Putin’s war and we STILL have SANCTIONS left to impose??!! WHY??!! (*Rotzy’s Commie Rant of the week)

*Thought Of The Day…Little Jack Horner sat in the corner, With a Papa John Pizza Pie. He could’ve got Soo Guy and Chow Mein from Blessings (*see above), So he said ”what a dumb Dink am I”! (Grim Fairy Tale)

Sept 26 – really ranting about Russkies, and more….

”Holy Cow, Toad”….

….I said (to myself) ….(or something like that) at about 5:45AM last Fri down in the front lobby here at Harris Place, after enjoying my coffee and first puff du jour in Edna The SUV. (*for my/our fellow residents who remain convinced Rotzy’s smoking weed daily down front in our Equinox….well, that’s cool by me and Miz. Jo) So….SO….after avoiding yet another fist fight with the electric door opener, I entered the lobby, and there it is/was. A high back, ergo-friendly, black leather ‘office chair’….and a neatly printed sign taped on it which read “Almost Brand New….’Free”. Hello??!! And forget the ”Almost”….there is nary a mark on this thing! However….there are numerous moving parts on it, adjustment levers, premium-grade casters and cetera, hence yours truly’s got to check it out…I mean, there might be an ‘EJECT” button….perhaps Google*tm it if I can find out the manufacturer. Anyway, a big “F/N” Thank You to some VERY kind/thoughtful resident(s)!! PS….plus….don’t tell anybody, but it’s funn just to sit and spin around on it!

Wouldn’t You Know It?

It’s been quite a while…..maybe a year or more….since Harry Houdini dropped by the 555 Harris Place parking lot, but he WAS here last nite (Thurs) or early this morn (Fri) and the Master Of Magic and Disappearing Acts has obviously still ‘got it’! Last nite he made the Catalytic Converter on a black Honda DISAPPEAR! GONE! Completely!! The “F/N” Crime Investigation Dept learned of this incident at about 4:30AM directly from the (very upset) car owner….and it is the 6th such theft in less than four years!….ALL within the same area of the parking lot!….all were ‘imports’ except for the Ford F250….all ‘on camera’, or within camera range! But who’s watching the monitors?! The poor guy who owns the Honda was really stressed out at what it’s gonna cost him!? Rotzy didn’t mention two years back the guy who owned the nice, white Hyundai was out $2500 bucks when he went to the shop to retrieve it!! Ouch! As to Rotzy tossing a little “F/N” humour into this item….because the actual reports on the previous 6 thefts aren’t funny….at all….they’re pathetic. Also, I have reason to believe that 6 vehicles is ‘WAY LIGHT’! Yours truly is aware of one other….a Cat. Conv. theft, the owner took the car to the dealership that day, new one installed, done. No call to police or his Insurance Rep (because he had $1500 Deductable) and his bill was $2100 dollars. Well, there are more people around like that guy! And that’s sad. You think that Skyline tells prospective renters “your vehicles are plenty safe on OUR parking lots”! (maybe so….compared to Buffalo, NY)

”I Wonder How Many There Are, Toad”?….

….I said (to myself) last week when the numbers came out. ”I mean, REALLY! 300,000!!?? C’mon comrade, that’s a LOT, isn’t it”? So….SO….the 300,000 is the number of Russian ‘Reserves’ being ‘called up’ by Vladimir Putin in HIS war against The Ukraine. But there are a number ‘people of position/power’ who appear to be questioning whether Vlad has too many zeroes in HIS ‘quote’, altho ‘threat’ is a much better word. Than ‘quote’. Anyway, if we drop ONE zero, it becomes 30,000 soldiers…and that’s still a lot, especially by ‘Canadian military standards’, albeit a far cry from The Puke’s 300,000! Now if we were to drop TWO zeroes….and a number of ‘people of position/power’ strongly believe this number to be much closer to the truth….they’d only be ‘calling up’ 3000 soldiers. ‘Reserves’! not well-trained, cracker-jack outfits like Navy Seals, US Marines, Canada’s own 48th Highlanders or the Princess Pat Rifles. In truth….from the number of casualties in Putin’s now-seven-month-long war….and getting the TRUTH from the Russians is a ‘hit and miss thing’ since forever….there are considerably more ‘military dead’ Ruskies than Ukranians. But Putin is WAY ahead in ‘property destroyed/erased’ and ‘dead civilians, ALL ages’….not to mention ‘the unspeakable tortures’ inflicted on them enroute to their deaths. But now it has become very clear that MANY of these ‘call-up reserves’….be it 3000/30,000 or 300,000….want no part of Putin and his #$%&@ war! Hell….most of them have never shouldered a firearm, let alone fire one….at another human being!! Hence, they’re ‘calling in sick’, missing ayem Roll Call, MIA, gone AWOL, some even protesting in the streets along with TENS (Hundreds?) of THOUSANDS of other Russian civilians!! Many of them have been fined and/or are in jail. Because you DON’T do that ‘buck the system’ stuff in Russia! But, because of this new anti-Putin movement growing all across The Motherland….things are perhaps changing. You see, there ARE Russians who are NOT ‘bad people (*see below), who even ‘have morals’. Imagine. In fact, it’s obvious there are a number….and it’s ‘really grown/growing in 2022’….who dislike/hate Putin to the point they want major change….tho they gotta be careful with such ideals as it doesn’t fit in with The Puke and the heavy hand of The Party. Thousands are LEAVING the country!! As to ”NOT bad people (*see above)….Rotzy’s gotta qualify/clarify that statement, OK? Example: History tells us in 1972 ALL Russians were ‘bad people’….VERY BAD….every last one of them! That was the ‘Canada vs the USSR Summit On Ice’ Tournament. There were other ‘bad people’ moments as well, with Kruschev’s Bay Of Pigs, ceretain tymes during Stalin’s days, and cetera. Then along came a guy named Gorbachev….often called ‘Gorby’….a ‘softer-spoken’ guy than Kruschev and the rest. I could always spot him in a group of presidents, kings and cetera….he was the one with a map of Chile tattooed on top of his forehead. Plus it seemed he smiled more than the rest of the Commies? As he passed away just recently the accolades for his ideas/ideals came in from around the globe. ‘Gorby’ wasn’t in power all that long….clearly he wasn’t ‘hard-ass’ enough for The Party’s liking. Well, the guy who is ‘in power’ today certainly is! ‘Hard-ass enough’. And he IS The Party. The modern day Hitler….and just as ****ing crazy/consumed with ‘power’. And just like the little Austrian with the bad moustache and hair-do, Putin isn’t winning HIS war either! But….BUT….Putin has weapons….of the nuclear missile type….that Adolf couldn’t even imagine. Putin has total control of ‘The N Buttons’….and that’s BAD. Putin is ‘bad people’ and that’s not good. (*Rotzy’s Ruskie Rant of the week)

*Thought Of The Day…If you peel a banana from the ‘other’ end, you’ll avoid those ‘stringy things’. (aha!….You just tried it, didn’t you? Or….you’re pissed off because you didn’t get any Chaquitas when you shopped this week!)

CONFABULIST, Steven Galloway

2015-06-19_18h22_34

By Steven Galloway

The Confabulist is a story of a man who is said to have killed Harry Houdini, twice no less. There is a saga or legend about Houdini being punched unexpectedly in the abdomen, the blow so severe it may have ruptured his appendix. In real life, such a set of blows to his abdomen did occur and Houdini did eventually die of acute appendicitis but the protagonist of the book is not listed as the guilty party.

Galloway’s tale intertwines the lives of Harry Houdini and Martin Strauss, a nondescript, average citizen whose love story is part of the book’s tapestry.

Houdini’s story here is based on real life anecdotes and known historical events. He did travel to Europe escaping from jails, straitjackets and handcuffs while being closely monitored and studied by the police of various European capitals. He did travel to Russia, performing for the Romanovs, the rulers of the country. The Russian facets of the story has some validity though it is somewhat tainted by writer’s license. No where does history or newspaper stories corroborate that Houdini was involved in espionage.

Houdini was a big name in Vaudeville at the time of WW I but acting as a spy…a stretch.

Strauss, the other leading character of the book seems to come out of nowhere, sounds like a none descript and seems less than vital to the story. He is the protagonist who punches Houdini near the beginning of the story evidently killing him with the said burst appendicitis. Strauss’ story continues with Strauss being hospitalized for some kind of memory/mental disorder which plagues him intermittently through the years in which the book is set.

The numerous espionage plots woven into the story are plausible as the story’s setting is during the days of World War I and the decade thereafter. It was a time when the United States was trying to avoid entry into the war and was working hard to keep Russia in it. Germany fighting a two front war, no matter how weak the Russian one might be, meant the Americans could still maintain their neutrality and not engage in actual combat. According to Galloway, Houdini was the espionage conduit between the Russian and the American governments. Fact is that Houdini did visit the various European countries and Russia as Galloway writes, but no one has ever confirmed that he was doing espionage for the Americans.

The book lagged

When Galloway reveals how Houdini’s tricks were performed, explaining the inner works of handcuffs and door locks, the book lags. These intricacies and explanations do not enhance the story at all, though a magician or a technologically minded reader might find interest there.

The story also can be criticized for the convoluted and puzzling line of the narrative, bouncing from Strauss’s romance, to his hospitalization and an explanation of his memory malady. This might appeal to the medically minded, few others.

The book interests

The story is more interesting when it deals with Houdini’s escapades and efforts at exposing the fraudulent practices of the Spiritualists of the era. As much as Houdini longed to contact his departed mother on the other side, he never believed it was really possible and he undertook a lifelong effort to expose the spiritualists of the time as charlatans and frauds who faked their séances only to exploit the gullible, the desperate or the depressed. Some executives in the American government, well known congressmen and senators, were believers and bought into the charlatans’ fakery. Houdini felt it was wrong for government policy to be swayed by such frauds and so he worked diligently to expose them as fakes. Galloway suggests that these government bigwigs may have plotted to kill Houdini in order to protect the lucrative trade of spiritualism. Were they on the take? Galloway never says, never suggests it. Disappointingly, the reader never really learns about the story behind the story in this regard.

Houdini according to Galloway lived an immoral life dotted with frequent infidelity. To Galloway’s credit, he does not really dwell on that aspect of Houdini’s life.

The final word

The book is short and an easy read. It is arguably entertaining but not enough to warrant the high praise which it seems to have garnered on many best read/seller lists. The author is credited with having written other books which have received high praise, but in my view this book does not deserve the same.

I would not read it again and I have am not certain I would read another book written by Steven Galloway. Rather than being a polished and excellent writer, he is a very good but developing one. He needs to polish and hone his craft more. I think he needs to examine his works to see if they flow like a stream or trickling brook. This book does not; it is more like small eddies disrupting the stream in its smooth flow. Strauss, Houdini, magic, spiritualism, espionage, all little eddies in the stream of The Confabulist. But this book’s story does demonstrate real potential for excellence.

COPPERMINE, Keith Ross Leckie

2014-08-11_13h06_56COPPERMINE
by
Keith Ross Leckie

If you are a history buff, especially Canadian early west, enjoy outdoor adventure stories with a little bit of court room tension and romance thrown in for good measure, then Coppermine is your book to read.

The story
The story is about two priests disappearing while on missionary work on the Arctic perimeter of northern Canada just after the turn of the 20th century. Jack Creed of the Canadian Northwest Mounted Police, along with an Indian interpreter, Angituk, are assigned to find out what happened to the two priests.

2014-08-11_13h38_43Murder at the Arctic Circle
Eventually, Jack and Angituk find the dismembered bodies and so to they track down the Eskimo pair responsible for the killing. Getting the accused back to Edmonton for trial is only half the story; the balance has twists and turns that are the norm in most court room dramas, the contradictory differences between ‘Stone age’ culture and ‘moden whites,’ some unexpected gender related surprises, a Hollywoodish romance between a white ‘sir Galahad’ and a ‘aboriginal snow princess.’ Finally, our ‘Galahad’ turns out to have a “darkened past” for which there are judicial repercussions.

2014-08-11_13h39_55TV or not TV
Leckie is a solid writer with most of his experience based on TV movie scripts. H does an excellent job at transforming himself into a novelist writing a story that is captivating, suspenseful and allround enjoyable. His action “scenes” are filled with tension and excitement. He does justice to his readers in his descriptions of man against nature, his comparison of  value systems and life philosophies of ‘primitive’ and ‘modern’ man. He successfully wins over his readers into the romantic entanglement within the story, so that we are applauding and cheering for our hero.

2014-08-11_13h41_29The novel fails too
The only criticism I would make of the book is that some descriptions of the Canadian far north, and the challenges facing our protagonists in their northern treks sometimes tested readers’ patience and attention. These portions of the story could have been shortened but it is a tough call to make. Setting the scene and the background is important for embellishing and grounding the story but how much is too much.

2014-08-11_13h43_49

All’s well that ends well
Finally, Leckie betrays his television writing persona with an ending that is essential for tv viewers. Good must conquer evil, love must triumph, ‘primitive’ man has life principles which are more than just redeemable and lastly, life is never as black and white as it seems to be at first glance.

My final thought
Coppermine is a good story, written well, and it successfully engages the reader throughout.  In short, it is a worthwhile read, though predictable, still very readable.

Sept 19 – no vacation time for Rotzy

Some of us to on vacation, others don’t.

After All The Hoopla and Ballyhooing….

on learning that Denny’s*tm was opening its’ new location in Brant’s Ford ron the WG Parkway had settled down, it meant that their ‘Country Fried Steak’ (aka ‘Chicken Fried Steak’) was gonna be available to Rotzy for the first tyme in 30-odd years! after the Rotzes and the Staintons (not their real name) landed at the Denny’s in upstate Watertown, NY. following the annual weekend ‘Leaf Tour’ of Vermont and New Hampshire, the same tyme as our Thanksgiving. (it was also the same tyme the Jays were kicking Dennis Eckersley and his Oakland A’s collective asses outta the ALCS, enroute to the World Series! Which, bye the bye, they won!! Anyway, it was a little early for supper when we got to Watertown, but we were all hungry after the drive from North Conway, NH. We were seated by Denny’s Hostess and ordering was a ‘no brainer’ for Rotzy….I just said ‘I’ll have the Chicken Fried Steak’!!….’you mean the ‘Country Fried Steak’, sir’?….’Yes….that’s fine!….you see, I already knew the ‘different name’. So….SO….today’s the day to end the ‘Denny’s 30 year drought’!! This coulda/shoulda/woulda ended weeks/months ago….but it didn’t. Hey….s–t happens, eh? That’s putting it mildly, but ‘today being Friday’, it means Order In-Take Out Day here in Unit #303, and that rule/rule of thumb has been (firmly) in place since Oct 1/2018….OK? Hence, at 2:30/3:00 pm this aft, Rotzy will be pointing Edna The SUV down the WGP to Denny’s*t/m….an American institution (of eateries)….and picking up our supper! Two of ’em, because as Miz found out on her i-POD, Chicken (Country) Fried Steak is actually BEEF rather than CHICKEN. Hence, with her new ‘eat more iron’ diet requirements, ‘red meat’ is one of the priorities. She’s not big on gravy….they usually ‘smother’ the steak with ‘Country Gravy’ so Rotzy’s

gonna axe the maitre’d for both of ours ‘on the side, thank you’, like, in a container of some kind. Also, tomorrow I/we will turn into the Geraldton Weekly Times-Star Food/Restaurant Critics. S–t. I/we haven’t done anything like that since Nakina had as many as FOUR restaurants operating during the summer months! Oh yes we did!! Well, tomorrow (Sat) I/we will let the readership know how Dennys*t/m fares in the ‘five star ratings’ with their ‘Country (Chicken) Fried Steak’!….Stay Tuned! (*Sat. Ayem* Rotzy mucked up and forgot to order the gravy ‘on the side and the food’s not as good ‘re-heated’. Miz. Jo…** Me…** 1/2. S–t.

Speaking Of ‘Food Critics’….

….the crew (Shane, Ryan and Brendan) on my favourite late nite/early morning/Canada-wide radio talk show The Shift (based in Calgary and Vancouver) got into the ‘Are You OK With?’ segment, with ‘pizza’ being the key word, so they’re chatting about ‘pizza’ last Wed at about 4:45AM EDST….thence into ‘pizza crusts’ and the various types of ‘crusts’….made with ‘pizza crust dough’. Well, Brendan’s eating choices/habits are ‘different’ than mine, or even ‘the norm’, you might say, often called ‘healthier choices’ and often made by ‘vegans’. Of course Brendan had to make mention of pizza crust made of cauliflower! (yeckk!) Even the laid-back Millennial On The Radio (Ryan) balked at that one, and there was talk about ‘entirely crust-less pizza’! Well, Shane took charge….and walked away with the “F/N” Quote Of The Week when he responded with ”pizza without crust is like a bowl of Jambalaya”! Too funny!! Almost ‘made a mistake’ in my FTL’s!!

The Monarchy….And Stuff

Rotzy MIGHT have made mention in last week’s edition that I’m not exactly doing handsprings over the new King….or his ‘lovely’ wife. But then again. Firstly, I must admit to being a ‘monarchist’, tho ‘admit’ may not be the correct word. In another day and tyme I might well have been a U/E/L. But as to ‘being a ‘monarchist’, make no mistake about it, I ‘inherited it’ from my Mom! (and my Dad too….he was German by name but much more Limey than Kraut in lineage) But I’m not of the banner waving, drum beating, lover of the Crown variety….it’s something that’s just always been there. And here in Canada. And it never ceases to amaze yours truly how the USA just loves/can’t get enough of the Royal Family….maybe more than us! As if perhaps they’d like to say ‘sorry’ and ‘re-do’ the Boston Tea Party!? Anyway, Rotzy is wondering how the Yanks are going to ‘accept’ King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla….aka King Charles #3 and The Hound. Woof! Tell you something here….keep it under your hat, OK? Last week, Penelope (not her real name), an olde ‘parking neighbour’ of mine down front asked me ‘what I thought about the Royals’? so I told her. Well……..she kicked it up a notch and with her it’s ‘King Chuck The Turd and Camilla (I can’t type what she said in here,,,,you know, young eyes and/or ears….but it’s NOT ‘flattering’) So….SO….Rotzy’s feelings toward Buckingham Palace’s new residents isn’t unique. At all. And The House of Tudor has storm clouds gathering overhead. Again. Still. Here’s a thought. S–t. Imagine. A ‘thought’…….from Rotzy. *Memo to The King.,,,so how do I start it? I mean, he IS the King! OK, OK, OK….here goes. Dear Your Majesty….In the unlikely event that you and/or your wife (the queen) are NOT being accepted in Britain and/or the Commonwealth, Rotzy ‘has a plan’. In truth, it was/is not mine, in truth, it was your Uncle Edward’s. GO! LEAVE TOWN! MOVE TO THE BAHAMAS (they don’t have/need/want a Ruler! Call it ‘CH-EXIT’! Methinks the right term is ABDICATE! And….take the Missus with you, (to myself…PLEEZE!!) This is gonna be the hard part Chuck, and you can bet your Royal ass she is NOT gonna want to lose her *Queen *Consort* title….OR….the Crown that goes with it. Just get her gone, OK? And then….”Long Live King William”!!

*Thought Of The Day….Jack B. Nimble, Jack B. Qvik, Jack jump high or you’ll set off the alarms here at 555 Harris Place and chase one and all outdoors in their sleepwear in the middle of the nite! (Grim Fairy Tale.)

CUT AND THRUST, Stuart Woods

CUT AND THRUST, Stuart Woods

If you like politically based suspense, this is your book.

Synopsis

Stone Barrington enters the cutthroat fray of politics in the exceptional new thriller from New York Timesbestselling author Stuart Woods.

When Stone Barrington travels to Los Angeles for the biggest political convention of the year, he finds the scene quite shaken up: a dazzling newcomer—and close friend of Stone’s—has given the delegates an unexpected choice, crucial alliances are made and broken behind closed doors, and it seems that more than one seat may be up for grabs.  And amid the ambitious schemers and hangers-on are a few people who may use the chaotic events as cover for more sinister plans. . . .

In this milieu of glad-handing and backroom deals, only the canniest player can come out on top . . . and it will take all of Stone’s discretion and powers of persuasion to arrange a desirable outcome.

Richard says
Not to my liking as the book deals with American politics, a subject with which I have shallow familiarity. But if you like American politics and keep abreast of its immobility, inertia and  intractability, then you will like this book. The book is Wood’s way of demonstrating his familiarity and knownledge of his nation’s political theatre. In that regard, it is good reading but for my tastes, it is boring.

What’s a trustee, a school board trustee?

If I Had a Billion Dollars…
I’d Fund the School Board for One Year

That’s right, the Durham District School Board’s budget for this year is just over a billion dollars
($1, 013,223,241 to be exact!) Trustees are your local watchdogs on how that money is spent and yet many people don’t understand what these elected officials do. As a former Pickering trustee with seven years of experience, I’d like to help demystify the job.

Across Durham Region there are 11 elected Trustees, two are from Pickering. The School Board is governed by these elected trustees who ensure that the Director of Education and their staff provide Durham students with the quality education that prepares them for bright futures.

While the provincial government mandates curriculum, collective bargaining, and the funding of education, trustees amplify the voices of locals and ensure the community is getting what it needs from funding resources.

Communication is at the core of the trustee’s job. In my years as a trustee, I found that parents, grandparents, and School Community Councils were invaluable resources, bringing passion and insight to the table. Being in tune with our community made me a better trustee and helped shine a light on inequities in our schools.

During my tenure, equity was a matter of providing new science labs at Dunbarton, a student Health Centre, an addition to Vaughan Willard, a breakfast program at schools where kids were arriving hungry, the relocation of the Gifted Program to William Dunbar, and the long-awaited addition to Frenchman’s Bay. These are just some of the initiatives launched from concerns communicated by parents and educators.

Trustees also need to work together. Some inequities are system-wide and if trustees don’t cooperate, students suffer. Making bussing less stressful for kids with two households and ensuring that all schools had their own custodial staff were important regional projects during my time on the board.

On October 24th you will choose two trustees to represent Pickering and help determine how $1 billion tax-payer dollars will be spent. Please vote and choose wisely.

Trustee candidate, DDSB,
Sherry Croteau

Eating an anti-inflammation diet

Eating an anti-inflammation diet

There is always some level of inflammation going on in our bodies. It’s a defence mechanism.

So you’ll never quite have that down to zero, and don’t want to, because we constantly will be exposed to things that must be dealt with. But it’s good for you when that defence activity stays at low levels because it simply means a less stressed body.

Research shows inflammation levels can be lowered by avoiding certain foods or reducing intake of them:

  1. Trans Fats
  2. Seed Oil
  3. Sugar
  4. Alcohol
  5. Wheat/ Gluten/ Grain
  6. Corn
  7. Soy
  8. Lectins/ Oxalates
  9. Dairy

Source: Dr. Sten Ekberg, chiropractor.

So, what can one eat then? Everything else, of course. A “ketogenic diet” is a good way to reduce inflammation. We know it won’t kill you – rather the opposite.

Here’s a sample ketogenic meal:

That’s a consisting of:

  • mushroom cream soup
  • a salad consisting of white cabbage, cauliflower, tomatoes, onions, linseed sprouts, bell peppers, and green beans
  • a main dish consisting of cod gratin in a capers and leek cream sauce with extra thick, crunchy bacon and lingonberries.

Not the joyless pile of watery things you expected, is it? Healthy can be pretty naughty.

Sept 1 – More memories of the CNE

Rotzy basks in the warmth of more Memories of the EX

More Memories From ‘The Ex’ Circa 1950-55
Had some good feedback on last week’s CNE item, so here’s some more. Memories. As kids we all had our favourite cowboys and indians (*indigenous and/or aboriginals hadn’t yet been heard of) from the movies and TV, and I saw all of mine….LIVE (!) at the grandstand matinee during those years. Hopalong Cassidy….Cisco and Pancho….Tonto and The Lone Ranger…..Lash Larue (my fave, but don’t tell Roy)…..Gene Autry with sidekick Gabby Hayes. But none of them could even hold a candle to Roy’s grand entrance! Roy on Trigger, leading the charge up the cinder running track right in front of 10,000 screaming kids….Bullet right at Trigger’s thundering hooves. Dale urging Buttermilk along half a length behind….and Pat Brady bringing up the rear in Nellybell, the WW II Willys Jeep, and tho it had no speedometer, I’m betting he was doing 50 +! MPH, as km/hr hadn’t yet been invented! (*see below) Now, don’t forget, Trigger was leading the entourage! Such an amazing/beautiful animal!! Still is apparently…’cause when Trigger died, Roy took him to the taxidermist and had him stuffed…. Rotzy recently heard that at an ‘R/R estate auction’ somebody wrote a 1/4 Million Dollar cheque so that he could have Trigger in his rec room, or standing (bucking?) on the deck beside the pool. Too cool, eh? Bye the bye, here’s a couple facts about Roy you may or may not be aware of. Roy never lost a fist fight! Ever. Hell, he never lost ANY kind of fight. In fact, he never had his Stetson*(tm) knocked off. Word has it he was known to use his boots (he could kick the eye out of a snake with those pointed toes) and even his spurs. Yet he never shot a man to death….except one tyme in Cheyenne….but the guy was such a wastrel/crook/bad guy, Dale prayed for Roy….for a week….and dont-cha know, it was “Happy Trails” all over again and there was peace in the valley. But I digress….back to The Ex. The Midway….food/rides/games of chance to win big $, perhaps a ‘Betty Boop-like’ kewpie doll, or a stuffed animal the size of an NFL Middle Linebacker!! Young Bobby was a sucker for tossing those “F/N ‘wooden donut thingies’ over the top of family-size Coke*tm bottles….I must’ve spent hundreds!! OK, OK, OK….not quite, but a lot. Then, I WON!!! A huge bear….beige….and it was smiling. BUT….I don’t remember what happened with/to it? A blank…still. There is no way it’d fit into the storage locker….hence, ‘sell’ it back to the Game Guy? Not interested. Give it to some stranger? I know damned well I did NOT show a fit of anger with my DAD….because…..well because you just didn’t do that! Bottom line….I simply don’t remember what we did with him/her?? S–t. So….SO….how about ‘Midway Food’….not those concoctions somebody dreamt up these days. I’m talking dogs, burgs, pogos, fries (no poutine) onions rings….i.e. NOTHING that might be on Canada’s Healthy Food Guide. ”Can we get a burg….please Dad”…..at the booth where the cook has about 20 lbs of greasy chopped ONIONS sitting at one side of the grill and a mountain of burgs at the other….all of them looking VERY WELL DONE, and you say ‘a hamburg with fried onions please, Sir. He slops some mustard and relish on the top bun with his spatula….and then….on the bottom bun he plopped a wad of onions, one of the WELL DONE hamburgs, then a giant scoop of onions atop that. Now the moment…..I bite into it, still a bit too hot, but who cares?! Another (bigger) bite and now there’s grease dripping off my chin and onto my t-shirt, I look up at my Dad and his chin is shiny too, but his shirt’s still clean. HEY!! Welcome to The Ex!!! The Rides?? Loved the Kiddies Tubs Of Fun, The Kiddies Boat Carousel, The Kiddies Merry-Go-Round….then we both went on the ADULT Horse Carousel (which went 30-35 mph!) (*see above)….The Tilt-A-Whirl and cetera….but….BUT….NOTHING that went more than 5 ft above sea level. We NEVER missed the Dodge-em Cars….now this was ten years before Dad bought his first car, hence he knew no more about driving than me, so here’s the pair of us being Barney-Bad-Ass all over the oily steel floor….’tag-team’ it was and we’d t-bone, sideswipe and head-on (a definite no-no!) anything that dared come near us! Dale Earnhardt Sr and Dale E. Jr. tho it was more like a Figure-8 Demolition Derby at Islip, N/York than NASCAR at Daytona. Oh yeh…one other thing on our list….being an olde fastball player from Woodstock, Dad still loved the game, so we always took in a couple games at the Canadian Ladies Fastball Championships….and ‘Fast’ is the word for it, they were Amazing!! Plus, as well as all my cowboy heroes, we also caught a few famous people (on the mammoth stage they rolled out onto the football field) at the Grandstand Sat Matinee….Bob Hope at the top of the list! tho I know not if Bing and Dorothy came along with him? I was likely more impressed with the appearance of another ‘Bob’…. Bob Richards (we knew his picture from the Wheaties*tm box) the record-setting Pole Vaulter from the U.S.A…..first to clear 16 ft!! And he showed 20,000 people just HOW he did it! Way cool! There was also a couple lady singers appeared….methinks maybe ”Juliette”, the Cdn chanteuse who had a show on CBC TV, and she made brassieres. Hey, I was FIVE, no idea what a ‘bra’ was? but I sort of recall her singing didn’t thrill me. But then (the next year?) it was Teresa Brewer….famous for “Put another nickel in, In the nickel-odeon” *(AHA!! You’re singing it right now!…aren’t you!!??) Well now….THAT lady could sing!! Anyway….to quote Bob Hope (*see above)…..to The Grande Olde Lady of Fairs….on behalf of this olde guy….”thanks for the memories”!! In this s–thole of a world we occupy in 2022, a trip back to the ‘fabulous fifties’ is just what the doctor ordered….and if YOU were THERE for them, and YOU are still HERE….good for YOU….and if YOU enjoyed the CNE Trip HALF as much as Rotzy did….and I only grabbed a piece of it….well, we’re LAUGHING!! If you’re too young and/or don’t understand/care, then twenty-three skee-do to you!

Bye The Bye….
….the Big “F/N” Contest to name the upscale restaurant formerly located in the CNE Stadium had/has NO WINNER! Not even close with the ‘entries’ we got: *Frans?…. “upscale”?….FRANS? c’mon man; *Winstons? (no Louie Janetta); Grosmanns? c’mon man!; *The Brown Derby? nope; *(The Colonial? too ‘bluesy’ *Frankie Tomato Head? or is it *Tommy Tomato Head (too big….it was the size of Pt.Credit!); *A&W Eat In? (that’s rude….and dumb) *The Seaway Motel/Rest? (”Bob Hope stays (stayed) here!!”) too little/too late; *Carlos & Adelina’s? (best Italian Food in T.O. but there’s just Mom and Pop..hence, they’d never manage. No, no, no, you’re all WRONG! The restaurant was simply called ”THE STOODLEIGH”, in white, 8 ft high letters, right across the front, up where it could be seen by all from a distance. Anyway, put your ‘Dunce Hats’ on and go sit in the corner. Until the next Contest. IF, by chance, YOU have dined there I’m curious to hear about it…..when, choices, rating, service, prices….so lemme know. I’m relatively sure they did NOT serve Teen Burgers! Or All-U-Can-Eat Spaghetti for $1.99.

Stuff….
Not sure if if I dreamt/dreamed this or not….but anyway, for almost five years now I’ve been the (self-appointed) ‘Dog Treat Guy’ here at the Skyline Compound….536/555 and 575….and have come to know dozens and dozens of them by name….from the 2 lb ‘Tara’ aka ‘Killer’ to the 102 lb ‘Venom’….and of course they know Rotzy and what’s in my pocket. Never been bit….perhaps gnarled on a few tymes by ‘newbies’, but they like me and are almost always ‘friendly towards me’, even performing

‘trix’….sometymes ‘friendlier’ than their owners….imagine!….and they (the dogs) provide the ongoing ‘dog fixes’ the olde guys needs/appreciates since our Edna The Chowhead Dog went to Dog Heaven. OK? Now for ‘the dream’ part. About the same tyme as I became Dog Treat Guy I also became the (self appointed) 555 Harris Place ‘Flower Pot Guy, ‘tending to the pots on each side of the front door’….’deadheading’ the petunias on a daily basis. Getting rid of the dead/dieing blooms….they immediately look better with the dead stuff gone and it really helps promote ‘new blooming/growth! OK? Well, up on the balcony of Unit #303 we have our own large double pot of purple-ish petunias, which in spite of being blown off its’ table 3 or 4 tymes during storms, it’s doing quite well, thank you! Because the Flower Pot Guy is ‘taking care of business’, not unlike Randy Bachmann. It’s actually more funn up here on 3rd floor as I release them to flutter down to the gardens directly below us….and if/when the blooms aren’t really dead and withered up, the flower turns into a helicopter, safely landing on the soil where it ‘becomes mulch’….which is a GOOD thing, right? So….SO….last Wed or Thurs I’m releasing ‘my helicopters’ and a breeze comes up….from the North, sending my ‘choppers’ beyond their ‘planned landing area’. No big deal right? Wrong!! At that very moment a woman steps out the front door who looks like she just witnessed something bad! Then one made a good landing, yet the woman (I didn’t/don’t know her, maybe a visitor?) looked up at me as if A/ I had s–t on my nose or B/ I was tossing Zehr’s $9.99 Large Watermelons at her, then asked (demanded?) WHAT on earth are you DOING up there?! I said ”ME”? One hand went onto her hip….”well, who else is up there”? “OK Toad I said (to myself) let’s have some fun, shall we”? Well, I glanced ( a tad exagerratedly) all around me, under, over and both sides….all clear, MT balconies….and replied ”nope….no dogs either”. I’m not sure what she said back to me?…. so I explained exactly WHAT on earth I had been doing, ‘just trying to make our balcony look ‘nice’, the value of ‘adding mulch’ in creating a ‘Greener Earth’ and on and on and on. Then she snaps back at me “well they’re not going to make a helluva lot of mulch sitting on the cement’!! to which, as ‘sheeplishly’ as I could muster up, Rotzy acguiesced (say what!?) ”you may have a valid point there, m’am”. By now I’m really wishing I DID have watermelons. Just ONE….even the $4.99 size! ”Hey Toad….I thought we were ‘gonna have some funn’?! but I’m up to my ass in alligators, whilst arguing with ‘Mother Earth’ down there in/near my ‘landing zone’. She is NOT funn….at all!….she is thge heck of me’!! And she needs a ‘cough’, and 3 floors up is just about right for a ‘far cough’! Hey! Perhaps a cantelope?….a real RIPE one! Instead, Rotzy The Gentleman politely said I’m coming right down with the broom and sweep the sidewalk….you’re right/I’m wrong/all’s well….and have a nice ‘Green’ day. Well, she didn’t like my reply, had to get in the last word, so Rotzy politely ‘whispered’ a nice, cheery ‘far cough’. **Update! Sunday 10:30AM as I write this. I just went out on the balcony….nary a hint of a breeze….and I ‘floated’ the BEST ‘copter yet to a perfect landing, right behind the rosebush!! Funn. ** Update #2….Monday 8:00AM…. wind N/W 15 k/hr FOUR launches….3 of them successful….#4 disappeared (onto Unit 203’s balcony). Zero casualties!

*Thought Of The Day….Mary had a little sheep, And with this sheep she went to sleep. The ‘sheep’ turned out to be a ‘ram’ And Mary had a little lamb. (Grim Fairy Tales)
